maybe it was the sincerity in her voice or the somber look on her face – whatever it was, the jokes died in jim’s throat. she was barely more than a kid, but she held herself like someone who had been through too much. “i don’t mind admitting it’s a bad carving,” he admitted, his smile softening. “but i appreciate it anyway.” she herself didn’t seem at all interested in pumpkin carving, and her earnest kindness lead him to put down his knife. “well, i think that’s enough crime against gourds for one day. have you gone on the haunted hay ride? it’s super kid friendly, not scary at all, but it’s nice.”
“No problem. I’m not too great at it either. I haven’t really carved one since I was young.” She couldn’t pin point when she lost the tradition but it was somewhere in her memory forgotten. “I haven’t yet. Seemed fun though and pretty chill. Were you thinking of going?”
