Interesting to note that while a history of animal cruelty is widely accepted to be a link with becoming a serial killer, the link between cruelty towards women and killing women is still up for debate. If a guy abuses a cat and then shoots women we say “we should have seen it coming that guy was nuts”, but if abuses women and then shoots women we say “we had no way of seeing it coming that guy was a perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human”.

Q: As the first out gay person in the country elected to a state legislature, you made history. What was that like?

A: I think I have a better perspective on it the farther away I get from it. I’m not sure even today that I really understand the ramifications of it and I certainly didn’t at the time because I viewed myself as taking a step forward that would be helpful to gay folks, but I viewed it as being elected in spite of being gay, not because of it. Now people get elected because they are gay as well as other characteristics. Kind of nice.

It was a very ugly campaign. Ugly. There was a lot of shooting through my windows, destroying my car, breaking windows at my campaign headquarters, serious harassment of people visiting my house and campaign office – it was really bad. I talk to the election commissioner every once in a while, he’s now retired now, and he still remembers it as one of the ugliest ever seen in the city of Boston. (source)

Noble won with 59% of the vote in 1974, making history and becoming part of the first delegation of out politicians invited to the White House to discuss LGBT issues under President Jimmy Carter. (side note: she was dating fellow activist Rita Mae Brown at the time)

Her election inspired Minnesota state senator Allan Spear, who had been closeted when first elected in 1972, to come out as gay. Because of her, he knew that “if I did come out, I would have company, even though she would be a thousand miles away,” he wrote in his autobiography. Coming out did not hurt his career; he was reelected several times before retiring in 2000. Milk also watched her campaign closely, although his style differed from Noble’s. “Harvey really was much more dramatic and pushed the envelope in a way,” she told of the late San Francisco city supervisor. “It was more to his style and he was fearless. I think we both knew that [one of us was going to die]. You suffer enough bomb threats and craziness with people…it just escalates.” (source)

Technically that’s a yes. Her powers extend well beyond just manipulating atmospheric pressure. She attunes to the weather of whatever planet she’s on or celestial body she’s near. Like while in space she’s been able to tap into the power of stars and pull hydrogen straight out of matter around her to create a bomb so there’s a precedent there that she can tap into forces around her.

Today is transgender day of remembrance. I’m sure plenty of people are seeing posts go by about remembrance, better said than I could manage- and so, I’d instead like to ask people to spare a thought for the lives, work and struggles of people still living, too. It’s a commonly repeated refrain that it is easier to “remember” the most vulnerable among us once they are gone than it is to pay them mind when they’re alive. It’s also very true.

Want to help people still alive? Particularly groups helping those who face the brunt of violence, such as transgender women of color? Check out these places:
