thunder   rumbles   in   the   distance,   a   sonorous   war   cry   at   the   shores   of   watatsumi.   rain   falls   off   the   awning   of   the   house   in   droves,   the   patter   upon   tiled   roofs   enough   to   lull   gorou's   keen   hearing   into   a   sense   of   relaxation.   he   didn't   like   being   caught   in   the   rain   -   but   there   was   something   about   being   kept   cozy   and   indoors,   warm   before   the   irori,   that   leant   to   his   comfort.   gorou   would   be   the   first   to   admit   that   he   was   a   sucker   for   nights   like   this,   when   the   thunder   was   far   away   enough   that   it   didn't   aggravate   his   memories   and   when   the   lightning   was   yet   too   dim   to   quake   his   soul.   

but   the   oni   was   a   counterweight   to   the   fear   that   would   come.   he   knew   that   deep   down,   though   stubborn   independence   refused   to   admit   it.   the   general   himself   was   much   more   keen   on   the   idea   that   he   was   'managing   it   all   on   his   own'   and   'it   was   fine   without   assistance,'   when   in   truth   itto's   presence   at   night   -   and   when   the   storms   on   watatsumi   got   too   bad   to   handle   -   had   kept   him   together   more   than   he'd   care   to   admit.   

knees   are   tucked   to   his   chest   as   he   sits   before   the   other   -   their   dinner   plates   long   discarded.   gorou's   tail   is   wrapped   about   himself,   his   face   buried   against   his   knees,   and   he   stares   the   oni   down   over   his   pant   legs,   drinking   in   his   strong   countenance   like   a   predator   drawing   upon   prey   that   he   might   leap   at   any   moment.   another   rumble,   closer   still,   and   comfort   fades   to   uneasiness   -   but   it   is   tempered   by   itto's   presence,   his   warm   aura,   and   maybe   that's   why   gorou   doesn't   immediately   reduce   to   sputtering   idiocy   when   the   question   leaves   itto's   mouth.   maybe   that's   why   he   doesn't   spontaneously   combust   on   the   spot,   or   find   a   convenient   place   to   hide   to   avoid   screaming   his   answer   too   eagerly.   

dignity.   refinement.   the   yokai   inhales   once,   his   ears   perking   forward   and   head   raising   from   the   little   nest   he'd   made   upon   his   own   knees.   "   do   you   mean...?   like...   "   he's   not   sure   he   can   say   it,   truly,   because   what   if   he's   wrong?   what   if   it's   pity?   an   attempt   to   distract   him   from   the   oncoming   storm   and   subsequent   despair   that   it   would   bring?   but   itto   wasn't   that   kind   of   man,   gorou   knew,   and   yet   his   anxiety   railed   against   his   next   actions.      he   unfurls   himself   like   a   flower,   drawing   across   the   space   between   them   so   that   he's   on   all   fours   before   the   other's   seated   form.   though   they   both   rest   upon   the   tatami,   the   gesture   is   hardly   supplicant,   and   instead   more   of   gorou's   strange   intensity   coming   into   play   behind   the   bright   teal   of   his   eyes.   "   like...   "   he   repeats   gently   now,   rocking   back   on   his   haunches   to   meet   the   brunt   of   crimson   gaze   head   on.   it   even   matches   the   hue   that   takes   to   his   cheek.   "   ...a   date?   "

ears   flick   this   way....   ears   flick   that   way,   reflexively   attempting   to   get   away   from   intrusive   little   traveler   fingers   attempting   to   harass   him.   as   time   goes   eases   by,   his   body   grows   more   and   more   tense,   and   his   tail   takes   to   swishing   in   impatience.   eventually,   gorou's   eyes   snap   open,   and   he   finally   raises   his   hands   to   swat   her   away.

        "   that's   so--   !   quit   that!   "   a   weak,   petulant   objection,   but   his   teeth   are   bared   all   the   same.   old   habits   die   hard.

quiet   succor   always   befalls   the   aftermath   of   battles,   the   collective   din   of   peace   caused   not   by   gentle   supplication,   but   the   ardor   of   death.   it   hangs   heavy   in   the   air   -   the   tang   of   blood   and   flame   still   a   persistent   itch   in   his   nostrils,   attached   firmly   to   his   clothes,   his   hair,   his   tail...   he   hates   it,   always   has,   the   way   it   makes   his   skin   crawl   in   the   wake   of   his   blood   lust   -   a   reminder   of   the   beast   that   lurks   beneath   skin,   or   a   reminder   of   failures   even   in   the   wake   of   victory.   it   didn't   matter   how   successful   they   could   be   on   the   front   or   in   combat,   people   would   always   die,   and   gorou   would   go   back   to   watatsumi   with   a   list   of   names   in   hand   -   families   to   inform.   

he   stands   upon   the   cliffside,   stormy   sea   breeze   caressing   the   fur   upon   his   ears   and   tail.   though   they   have   long   since   left   the   battle   far   behind,   it's   gorou's   prerogative   to   continue   to   assess   what   he   could   have   done   differently   -   and   so   he   does,   despite   the   resistance   healer's   command   to   remain   in   bed.   gorou   was   anything   but   idle,   this   time   included.   

it'd   been   a   stray   arrow   -   infused   with   electro   that   had   pierced   an   unguarded   forearm.   he'd   been   lax   in   his   defense,   gorou's   own   bow   strung   with   the   intent   to   kill;   a   familiar   haze   of   red   had   overtaken   him,   a   predator   intent   on   prey   -   when   pain   had   lanced   up   his   body   and   shocked   him   so   hard   well...   it   had   become   a   battle   lost,   a   sling   in   place,   and   a   frown   on   handsome   features.   there   was   no   top   dog   gorou   today,   only   a   general   in   mourning   and   more   soldiers   than   he'd   like   in   the   medical   tent.   

she   sneaks   up   on   him,   as   she   always   does.   

his   body   goes   ramrod   straight,   previously   lax   ears   shooting   upright   and   tired   eyes   (red   and   black   markings   accentuated   by   heavy   bags   of   sleeplessness)   going   wide.   gorou's   tail   swishes   once,   and   he   makes   to   salute,   before   wincing...   and   settles   on   bowing   instead.   the   injury   would   heal   quickly,   with   both   his   yokai   blood   and   the   healer's   vision   infused   power,   but   an   inability   to   salute   their   leader   was   another   blow   to   already   wayward   pride.   "   your   excellency!   "   he   jerks   out,   meeting   her   depthless   hues   with   the   gaze   of   a   man   ashamed   of   his   transgressions.   it   was   a   struggle,   and   it   shows   in   his   body   language,   lean   frame   coiled   taught   like   a   bowstring   and   tell-tale   ears   flattened   with   shame.   gorou   manages   all   the   same.   kokomi   deserved   at   least   that   from   him.   

"   ah.   "   her   question   has   him   slumping   even   further,   and   only   then   does   gorou   turn   away,   his   mistakes   still   a   tangible   thing   between   them.   "   no   need   to   fret   over   me,   your   excellency.   if   anything,   i   worry   for   their   morale...   "   the   last   part   a   near   whisper,   but   audible   on   the   wind,   as   he   turns   away   to   regard   the   encampment   stretching   before   them.   yes,   they   deserved   her   attention   much   more   than   he   did.   "   nothing   hurts   the   soul   of   an   army   quite   like   a   crushing   defeat.   "   and   an   injured   general,   but   he   needn't   say   that.
