This miniature depicts one of the twin sons of the knight Gillion battling a Saracen admiral for the hand of a beautiful maiden. A look of agony is evident on the face of the defeated as he realizes that he has been vanquished by Gerard, who is about to deliver the death blow. Gerard, meanwhile, locks eyes with his beloved who is depicted on his shield.

A Muggletonian map of the cosmos, showing separate solar systems. The Muggletonians, an obscure British protestant sect, were started in the 1600s by Lodowicke Muggleton and his relatives. They were anti-science, insisting that the earth was at the center of the universe (as shown above) well into the 1800s – this map is from an 1846 publication.
