Eli hadn’t at all expected their interaction to become a friendly one, especially when he was so sure that he’d irreversibly gotten off on the wrong foot with Jackson. But now that he was sitting next to him and actually seemed to be enjoying talking with him, in spite of his terrible habit of talking too much, Eli was starting to think that maybe it was a false reputation that preceded the other male. “Yeah? That’s pretty cool. Who would’ve thought.” He refrained from going the cliche route and asking Jackson more about his music taste just yet. While he knew from being friends with Caleb that guys who were athletes weren’t necessarily stereotypical asshole jocks, something about Jackson’s aura and the way that he carried himself read that way. But Eli was quickly finding out that was an incorrect assumption to make. It was refreshing to hear him admit to having a few songs from one of the shitty emo bands he liked in his collection, and there was something positively infectious about Jackson’s smile. His entire face opened up and became brighter, and his eyes went soft in a way that Eli found endearing. He almost felt a tiny sense of accomplishment at how many of them he’d managed to earn in the short amount of time they’d been talking, a similar, dimply version of his own smile etched in place in response. He laughed a little when the other man exaggerated his impatience- at least, he assumed he was exaggerating. “Guess you can’t be a lacrosse star and a rock star. That’d just be unfair.” Eli felt safe saying it, everyone at Arcadia knew who Jackson was, and so what if he was flirting a little? He flirted with lots of people. “I think my dad probably just supported the music thing because he knew I’d always be shit at sports. I was really embarrassing in like, peewee soccer.” He admitted. There he went again with the talking too much.
jackson hadn’t initially meant to fall into a conversation with the boy. he wasn’t exactly sure what had prompted him to initiate it in the first place, yet, here he was smiling at a guy clutching a guitar of all things. his parents would be appalled. “ ── so is that the kind of music you usually play? rock, i mean. ” he clarified, arching a eyebrow. part of him was half expecting the other male to jump up at any given time and just walk away. jackson had been a dick to hi less than five minutes ago, after all. he wouldn’t blame eli if he did. yet, he hoped he wouldn’t it was hard to explain. hard to put into words. but his smile was intriguing. inviting. warm. warmth wasn’t exactly something he had the luxury of experiencing lately. it sparked something in him that he wasn’t even aware existed. if he knew what was good for him, jackson should shut this down now. just stand up and excuse himself and never acknowledge the other student again. but he couldn’t do that. or more like he didn’t want too. maybe he was tired of repressing everyone. hiding a crucial part of himself so meticulously. a tint of red crept up his alabaster skin at the other’s words. “ i’ll just leave the rock star thing to you, yeah? seems like you got that covered pretty well. ” the words were complementary, laced with flirtation. what was he doing? a slight chuckle fell from his lips at eli’s admission. “ now that i would have liked to see. ” he mused, a teasing undertone making itself known. “ my mother tried to put me in piano classes when i was ten. something about opening up my mind. needless to say, my instructor ran out in tears twenty minutes later. never heard from that poor woman again. ” jackson recounted, a uncharacteristic grin plastered across his features.

katherine maintained her icy glare, fixated on the strangers back as they stormed away, before turning her attention back to her best friend. “cold comments and a hot coffee poured into your lap? now that could be arranged.” she smirked. “oh don’t even get me started. he isn’t even the first rude customer i’ve had today. the first one tried to flirt with me! i may have been okay with it if he wasn’t in his 50′s!” she exclaimed. “i don’t even know how he got in here!”
“ ── just make sure the coffee's black. like your soul. ” he mused, a smirk of his own pulling at the corner of his lips. a chuckle fell from his mouth at her words, amusement glinting in his hazel orbs. “c’mon kat. he couldve been your sugar daddy. should’ve given the poor man a chance. i’m sure he was itching for a chance to use his viagra. ”

“That I would pay money to see.” Caleb paused as he realized that the way he had said it made it seem like he was all for Jackson’s father having a heartache. “Oh crap. I meant seeing your parents reaction to you becoming a stripper, not your father having a heart attack. I don’t want your father to have a heart attack. I like your father. I mean our dads have a weird bromance.” He nervously rambled. “Who knew my mother was so sly?”
jackson couldn’t help but bust out laughing at the expression on caleb’s face. “ ── i know what you meant, man. it’s cool. i’d do the same. ” he replied through the laughter. “ my mom always used to tell me that when she first met my dad she thought he was in a relationship with yours for a solid week before he finally asked her out. some bromance that must have been. ”

Eli hadn’t expected the smile that broke across the other male’s face at his description of the song he’d been halfheartedly strumming before, but he appreciated the look of it even more because it surprised him, matching it with one of his own immediately. He nodded, wetting his lips again before pressing them together, all the while fiddling with the pick that was tucked behind the strings. He guessed that he shouldn’t have written it off as ‘emo crap’ just because the guy he was talking to was wearing a letterman jacket- ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’, and all that. “Yeah. You listen to that kind of stuff?” He figured it safe enough to ask, absently wrapping his fingers around the guitar’s neck, but merely resting his other arm on top of it as he heard the other boy out, making absolutely no move to start playing it again. He didn’t really think Jackson was going to reveal some hidden musical talent to him, but he didn’t think he was going to dismiss the idea like it was kind of ridiculous to even ask, either. “I didn’t think you did.” He chuckled, eyes briefly flickering down to what the other was wearing before his gaze met Jackson’s once more. “I taught myself in middle school. My dad got me my first acoustic for my thirteenth birthday, he found it at a yard sale.” He knew it was kind of an overshare, that he probably didn’t need to answer the question so thoroughly, but the words had just come thoughtlessly spilling out. “I didn’t have the patience for it either, at first.” He admitted. And suddenly it occurred to him that he was already talking too much without even having introduced himself yet. “I’m Elijah, by the way.” He tacked on, almost in after thought.
jackson was well aware of the stigma that followed him around every time he adorned the green and white jacket. he was good at lacrosse, great even, having learned to play the sport at a young age. he was well aware of the reputation that followed him around. he had earned that fair and square with his sharp words and piercing glares. and the unbridled need to be as close to perfect as he could manage. yet, there was so much more to him underneath the surface. “ ── i might have a couple of their songs stashed away in my phone. ” he admitted with a sheepish grin. with a slight shift he aligned himself with the other male, settling comfortably on to the edge of the fountain. he listened to the brunette intently, hazel eyes bright and curious. “ you taught yourself? that’s pretty cool. ” he commented with an appreciative nod. music was never really a thing his family focused on. his father deemed it nonsense and his mother titled it unrealistic. “ i imagine it takes a lot of dedication. i probably would have smashed the guitar threw the wall thirty minutes in. ” his lips quirked at the corners, a smile forming slowly, white teeth visible. it was earnest, endearing even. the other male had piqued jackson’s curiosity. the boy with the long hair, guitar clutched in one hand, so different from himself. “ jackson. ” he replied, meeting elijah’s gaze, a smile still plastered across his face. yes, he was surely losing his mind.

Eli wasn’t sure of how to best answer that question. He definitely wasn’t about to tell her brother of all people that the way he knew Katya was from a few months he spent hooking up with her during their junior year, prior to finding out that she was already in a relationship. They hadn’t really spoken since he found out and broke things off. Naturally, he came up with something else to tell Jackson, and he did it fast. “Yeah, we used to hang out kind of a lot, like last year. But then we just kinda got busy with different things, y’know how it is.” He even managed to surprise himself at how impressively vague it sounded. He didn’t at all expect what happened next. What Eli had imagined would probably happen was that Jackson would say something to him to indicate that that he would rather he go someplace else and stop prolonging an interaction that he probably hadn’t even meant to continue beyond asking him to shut up. Or maybe for Jackson to get up and leave himself. So when he saw the other male gather his things, rise from his place on the bench and cross the short distance to the fountain, he was visibly surprised, eyebrows going immediately from pinched to perked up. He automatically moved his own backpack so that he could free up the space beside him, letting it rest between his feet instead and shifting his guitar slightly on his lap so that the neck of it wouldn’t be in his way. “Oh.. it was just, ah…” Eli laid his arm over the face of the guitar, dragging his fingers back through his hair with his other hand and turning his body so that he was facing Jackson a bit more head on. “Emo crap.” He admitted, laughing airily before clarifying, “Motion City Soundtrack.” He set the guitar upright on his lap so it wasn’t invading the other boy’s space. “Do you play?”
his explanation was simple enough and jackson had no reason to question it. so he accepted it with a small nod. “ ── sounds like katya. always the social butterfly. ” it was crazy how different the two had been despite being raised by the same family. maybe genetics came into play. perhaps jackson’s biological parents had been reserved assholes as well. in all honestly, he probably should have just gathered his things and walked away. if he had even a fraction of common sense he would pick up his things right now and haul ass back to his dorm and try to get some much deserved sleep. but he knew that was shot. the images that flickered behind his eyelids when they finally closed were disconcerting. haunting, even. yet, here he was. perched on the edge of that fucking fountain that he hated so much, next to a guy he barely even knew. talk about stepping out of his comfort zone. the lack of sleep must certainly be driving him slowly insane. he wasn’t sure if he really spoke to anyone these days other than his teammates and riley. jackson slid his backpack off of his shoulder, dropping it to the ground carelessly, placing his textbook onto the empty spot beside him. a involuntarily chuckle fell from his plush lips at the words ‘ emo crap ‘. okay. well. that was different. however, he was much too tired to compose himself into something more stoic. “ they were a rock band, right? ” he wasn’t entirely clueless, contrary to popular belief. jackson fiddled with his lithe fingers, tracing a senseless pattern into the fabric of his jeans. “ me, play? god no. my parents would never allow that. besides, i don’t have the patience for it. ” he indulged, shaking his head in silent amusement. “ how long have you been playing? ” he wasn’t sure why he was asking. or why he cared. yet he wanted to know.
─ C A L E B:
“I mean isn’t that every parents dream for their child?” he teased trying not to laugh. “That, and she really thought you were a horrid child.” He told him not meaning it in the slightest both of his parents adored Jackson and his entire family.
“ ── i am fairly certain my father would have a heart attack. ” he joked, eyes crinkling at the edges, another chuckle falling from his lips. “ oh, please. your mother adores me. who do you think supplied me with the alcohol for that party back in our sophomore year? ”
