❝ do you like it here? ❞ - @jxckxfalltrxdes
Andie looked over at Jack, a soft smile on her face. “I do,” she said, relaxing on the couch. “You’ve built a good home, Jack. There’s always going to be underlying chaos, give the company you keep, plus yourself and Merlin, but it’s still a safe place.”
@jxckxfalltrxdes
Ever since he escaped to freedom at 16 he's been nomadic. Merely surviving. Learning enough about the world to blend in, but there was always trouble at his heel.
But he got older, stronger, wiser. He became a father. And the world became more terrifying. Ross carried a bulk of his emotional education and did so fucking much to help settle. There were still plenty of days when he feels like he's failing Merlin but each day that they have together...that they bond...it's a gift.
Andie's friendship has been a blessing for all of them. Having someone outside of Ross to trust with Merlin wasn't something he ever thought possible, but she's fiercely protective and powerful in her own right.
He thought they'd be moving soon. Out of habit. For safety reasons.
Merlin had thrown a big tantrum and isn't talking to him right now. Jack hates breaking his heart but...that's how they've always been. But after a talk with Ross, Jack relented that they didn't have any big enemies. Hadn't for years. No loose ends anywhere nearby. The bar was in a good location for clientele and school...if Jack ever felt ready to allow Merlin to have a more normal upbringing.
"...Merlin likes it here. I've worried so much about keeping him alive...I haven't thought too much about him...living life."
"...plus, the food scene would be devastated if Ross left," He tried to ease the tension a bit. Not liking to be so...vulnerable.
"...I've built safe places. Not homes. Ross and Merlin...with their tea parties and fashions and faux courtroom dramas...they made places home. When all you've known is shifting sand...sold ground can be jarring."
Andie watched him for a moment, just listening to his words before reaching for his hand. “I’m proud of you,” she said softly. “And for the record, even if you can’t see it, you help make places home too. It’s in the little things I see you do for Merlin, and the way you joke with Ross when you’re feeling relaxed.”
She grinned and scooted a little closer to him. “That’s the struggle with constantly being on the move. Finding solid ground gives you anxiety, because you’re always ready for the Next Thing to crash into. Fortunately for you, I can typically see those things coming ahead of time.”
She had an affinity for coldness, but given his element, maybe it was just him running hot. Still, her hand in his was comforting in a way that's rare for him. The words that came with the gesture even rarer, but...welcomed. Even if inside of him he's burning with uncertainty. To the praise and if he even deserved it...but he accepted it.
"Thank you..." he didn't know what other words were needed, so he simply gave her hand another squeeze.
He did grin at her, "I'm thankful for that. Merlin's still learning. We encourage wild magic so there's not been much stifling. Given our lives, he gets visions that have helped us survive...but it is becoming clear that his powers of Sight aren't bound by a certain direction. And are more prominent when he's touching something. He can see...the past, present, and future of a thing...he'll need help in training. Ross and I can help...but...you'll be invaluable to us. To him."
To lighten the mood up, "I am curious if between your powers, you'll ever be able to plan a surprise party for the other."

“Vacuum! That’s the bitch!”
“I hate forgetting words like that, it makes life that much more annoying. Also, I’m absolutely telling Ross you said that, Merlin.”
Putting on a very bad Scottish accent, Merlin replies with, "Ye'll haff'ta fin' im firs..."
Jack stood and headed toward the closet to try and find theirs.
"Don't mind him. He's just upset he couldn't go with Ross while he went back to visit Scotland for a few days. Though if you're interested, we've now got a trip planned to go visit Nessie later in November."
"Aha!" Jack said in triumph as he pulled out an older model vacuum that he then frowned at, "Like I said...not of this decade. And no worries. Happens to us a lot. Between the multiple languages and the ADHD, forgetting the terms for things is very common."
“I need the thingy. You know, the thingy that makes the whooshing noise? Fuck, what is it called…”
“The thingy with the long handle, it goes whoosh really loud and sucks things up!”
"His name is Ross but he's not here right now."
"Merlin..." Jack said in lightly parental warning, but with no heat, as he put down his notebook.
"We typically cheat and use magic to clean, but our vacuum should still work. Can't promise it's from this decade though."
“I think once you explain things to him he’ll feel better but he was definitely sad. Also, will you and Ross please tell that child that sadness of any kind isn’t a weakness? You two are the ones he needs to hear it from, cause I can say it until I’m blue in the face, but I’m me and you and Ross are you. There’s a very big difference. Also, so help me, if you think sadness is a weakness, I’m going to use my sadness at that thought to kick your ass and prove it can be a strength.”
Really, it got to be exhausting at times keeping these men, Merlin included despite his young age, from emotionally dissolving like cotton candy in water. Still, she wouldn’t change it for the world. She might try to bribe her way into a spa day though.
“I really care about all three of you and I just want to make sure everyone is okay and still communicating. At the end of the day that’s all that matters.”
He ran his hand over his face. Not succeeding after trying was definitely a kick in the ass that didn't feel good. More when it was something as complex and important as a child's well being. Physically...Merlin was all right. But emotionally...Jack wanted him to be a lot better in the world than when he was forced into it.
Jack made a face, "I don't think it a weakness...I just...feeling sad in my life was always irrelevant because fuck if anything changed just because I admitted to being sad." He made a quick gesture that he heard it once he said the words out loud, "That is not the mindset I want Merlin to have. I'll...set aside a day soon for us to go out together for some one on one fun father/son day. In this case...lack of subtly might be for his benefit. Maybe I'll take him to see the house that will soon be his. Let him roam the neighborhood...and Gods have mercy, let him keep any feral friend he might find along the way...."
"We're more than grateful to you. You've been instrumental to our survival...and an amazing friend. Last week I supplied the manager of that new posh spa for her bachelorette party for werewolves. I'm sure I can get a pretty good package if you're interested?"

"Fuck..."
Information was valuable. It would mean all the difference in survival. Ross and Jack both treated information the same way they did when they were active hired men. The difference between them and Merlin...well, they already knew things. They knew how to read between the lines...and had more authority and power that when they ask a question, they get a direct answer.
Merlin was a kid. In attempts to parent and keep him safe...they do a lot to protect him from what they think is harmful information.
But they do go about it to some extremes. The enemies both he and Ross have made over the years aren't something to scoff at. Moving, despite how ideal the place they tried to live in was, meant living another day. Living another day was his core goal since learning about Merlin.
Adjusting and adapting while still knowing the things of his past weren't all taken care of...it was hard. Not an excuse...not anymore.
"I'm sorry. I'll talk with him. Is he...? He must be very upset if he lashed out at you. He cares so much about you...the thought of not seeing you again must have really...was there fire?"
“Did you seriously leave Merlin out of the loop again? How many times do we have to talk about this before you get it through that thick skull of yours to stop leaving him out of shit?”
Jack was shocked by the tone of her voice. It was a group effort that he now had a much better grasp at fatherhood. He's been trying so much harder to be there for Merlin and understand him as his own being and not as...an asset. Or a trophy. Or an extension of himself. The older he got and more of a personality he got...it was needed more than ever.
"It's a surprise...a nice one! All of the previous places we've lived in have been through forging some if not all of the paperwork. Ross and I have been working our asses off, especially with the scare we had a few weeks ago that risked everything. But we soothed it out...the place we're getting will be away from the business. In a good school district and a playground close enough. A house where he gets his own room, a play room, and he'll be in the discussion to help decide what we fill the rest of it with! Bureaucracy is fucking time consuming though..they're taking their sweet ass time in approving it all, but it's legit. It's real. And it'll be his. Legally and fully paid...in a few more days. Wait...why are you so angry? "

“I never loved you. Never.”
“I thought you were the one for me. But, you’re not the one for anyone.”
“You think what we had was real? It was an act. You’re a joke.”
“Love is for fools. Money is stability. I have to leave.”
“We were always doomed to end up here.”
“I made it–I made it here. Please, just stay with me.”
“You can stay awake, right? You can do that..I know you can.”
“I knew you were mean sometimes. But I never thought you were cruel.”
“We’re from two different worlds. This was never going to work.”
“I love you. But I’m not in love with you.”
“I thought you believed in me. That was a lie too, wasn’t it?”
“You’ll forget me tomorrow because I’ve already forgotten you.”
“You’re too damaged for anyone to love.”
“I used to like who I was. I was fine with it. You made me hate myself.”
“You thought I still cared? Hilarious.”
“You took away a year of my life. I can’t get that back.”
“You cannot be serious. You thought I’d choose you over them?”
“Nothing is more important than my career. Nothing. Not even you.”
“Tell me to leave and I’ll walk out forever. Just say it.”
“Tell me you don’t love me. Tell me we meant nothing.”
“Maybe somewhere in the universe, we made it work. Even if that wasn’t here.”
“I think knowing you has made my life better and worse.”
“Only you would choose to leave me on our wedding day.”
“I don’t want it back. I don’t want that ring back. You keep that.”
“I’m begging you to stay and you just want to walk away, anyway.”
