Natsu, after being orphaned at a young age joins the circus as a fire dancer. He teaches himself all sorts of fire related tricks— it becomes an extension of himself, an outlet for his creativity. The audience adores him from the start, and he becomes the famed “Fire Dragon”.

Lucy is the daughter of the noble Heartfilia family, the only daughter of Jude Heartfilia and beneficiary to the Heartfilia Trading business. She also happens to have zero interest in the business and dreams of being a storyteller. Her mother would tell her the stories of the constellations, and she memorized each and every one of them before her mother died. One day, she decides to create an alias and sneaks into the circus, using the magic her mother taught her to conjure starry recreations of the creatures that make up the constellations. Her act is a massive hit, and soon she becomes renown in the city as “The Starlit Storyteller”.

Natsu and Lucy connect quickly, being some of the youngest acts in the Cirque du Fèes. Natsu is entranced by her magical ability, the stars she puppets radiating a nostalgic feeling. Lucy recognizes Natsu from her times she snuck out to watch the Cirque as a child, but she knows she can’t let herself get attached in the chance that things go wrong for her. If her father discovers her at the show, she knows he wouldn’t hesitate to harm the performers to get her back.

Natsu doesn’t care about her reserved position with the rest of the performers. He checks in on her regularly, finding any chance he can to make conversation with her. He tries everything he can, getting her to open up slowly but surely. His warmth makes Lucy feel at ease while she's around him. It almost makes her believe that she could perform like this for the rest of her life, with no worries or fears.

Oh, if only life were that simple.
