writing challenge!
open up your document and put words in it
I'm gonna say this, and it's gonna spark a defensive reaction within some of you, but I need you to listen to me and let it sit for a moment before I explain further. It is not a personal stain against your morality.
From both my experience reading works by white writers, and my experience running this blog, I have come to the conclusion that many white writers are too used to relying on Whiteness being understood as the default experience of both your characters and your readers, and it makes you weaker writers with weaker technique overall.
One thought I find myself having often is "well, what do you do for your white characters?" I've grown to understand... Many of you don't 😅 you don't actually understand or apply character design techniques because it is Assumed™ that the reader understands- that the reader has the white gaze. It doesn't need to be Said that your character is white, and will do familiar white things. It is Assumed™ that white characters fall under the Magicking It Away rules automatically, while Black characters have to have reality applied to them first. You don't actually have to... Well, write.
The brilliant Toni Morrison explained this in an interview of hers (here's another; watch her doc!!!) that there's this assumption that one's readers are white. So when she would purposefully- and there's a difference!- write stories for the Black gaze, that certain things didn't have to be explained because we Understood, it would get frustrating for white readers. They felt left out, unappealed to, hurt.
And yet, that's standard fare- and everyone's not writing such specific stories like Toni! To be "fair", we did understand y'all. We had to. But those same techniques, both in writing and in media consumption, I believe are atrophied from white viewers ("I don't watch this because I don't relate!" Or projection of ones own identity into Black characters to be "relatable") because it's not Socially Required for you to apply them.
It's why I'm always telling y'all to study Black creations about Black people. Writing is a craft, and a craft has to be honed!! You have to practice!! I had a whole lesson on this and I feel like everyone glossed over it lmao. I promise it'll make your writing of EVERY character better overall. 🙏🏾
10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing
If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain, here are some ideas:
1. Sprained Ankle
A common injury that can severely limit mobility. This is useful because your characters will have to experience a mild struggle and adapt their plans to their new lack of mobiliy. Perfect to add tension to a chase scene.
2. Rib Contusion
A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult, helping you sneak in those ragged wheezes during a fight scene. Could also be used for something sport-related! It's impactful enough to leave a lingering pain but not enough to hinder their overall movement.
3. Concussions
This common brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a character’s judgment heavily. It can also cause mild amnesia.
I enjoy using concussions when you need another character to subtly take over the fight/scene, it's an easy way to switch POVs. You could also use it if you need a 'cute' recovery moment with A and B.
4. Fractured Finger
A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills. This would be perfect for characters like artists, writers, etc. Or, a fighter who brushes it off as nothing till they try to throw a punch and are hit with pain.
5. Road Rash
Road rash is an abrasion caused by friction. Aka scraping skin. The raw, painful sting resulting from a fall can be a quick but effective way to add pain to your writing. Tip: it's great if you need a mild injury for a child.
6. Shoulder Dislocation
This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation. Good for torture scenes.
7. Deep Laceration
A deep laceration is a cut that requires stitches. As someone who got stitches as a kid, they really aren't that bad! A 2-3 inch wound (in length) provides just enough pain and blood to add that dramatic flair to your writing while not severely deterring your character.
This is also a great wound to look back on since it often scars. Note: the deeper and wider the cut the worse your character's condition. Don't give them a 5 inch deep gash and call that mild.
8. Burns
Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma. Like the previous injury, the lasting physical and emotional trauma of a burn is a great wound for characters to look back on.
If you want to explore writing burns, read here.
9. Pulled Muscle
This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, offering a window to force your character to lean on another. Note: I personally use muscle related injuries when I want to focus more on the pain and sprains to focus on a lack of mobility.
10. Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted. When exploring tendonitis make sure you research well as this can easily turn into a more severe injury.
This is a quick, brief list of ideas to provide writers inspiration. Since it is a shorter blog, I have not covered the injuries in detail. This is inspiration, not a thorough guide. Happy writing! :)

I've been working on a Descendants OC recently and while working on a small bit of a fic that's never gonna be posted, one of the characters talks to their parent about the same thing before it goes to the next character
And my obsession with making all of my characters related to ice somehow is seriously screwing me over because the whiplash of Classic Disney Villains In Order: Gaston, The Evil Queen, Cruella De Vil, Ursula, Jafar, The Snow Queen, Maleficent, Hades, Captain Hook-
Like, it doesn't fit. It absolutely does not fit. But I'm doing it anyway just because I can.
Hi okay so their name is Soren (he/they).
His mother originally raised him to be an exact replica of her, but since the Snow Queen is notoriously not the best with kids and only ever wanted to train an heir, she gives up on him the moment she realizes they're never actually going to get off the Isle. As a result, he gives up literally all of his own interests and goals to be a replica of her in a futile attempt to make him proud.
They work as a 'spy' for The Sea Three. Their biggest skill is being able to make themself disappear and blend in really easily (and also a touch of parkour). He's essentially the Carlos opposition that the Sea Three doesn't have, dynamic-wise.
Loves being in group settings, highly detail oriented, and acts as close to a Prince as he possibly can on the Isle.
Because their mother is notorious for not having anyone close to her and living and working entirely alone, they tend self-sabotage literally every relationship they've ever had, even the ones that are, like, purely business. The only person who has survived this is Hansen of the Southern Isle (singular, not plural), the son of Hans (another OC I'm working on), who has been their best friend since childhood. They have a running joke that they'll get married one day to continue their royal bloodlines but they couldn't be less interested in each other.
I feel like kids of disgraced or ex-royals on the Isle probably tend to stick together in some form or another, but he and Evie have a very passive rivalry purely because their parents don't like each other. I'm basing the Snow Queen on the 1957 animated film by Lev Atamanov (you can find it in YouTube and it's only an hour, I highly suggest it if you ever wanna kill some time), and the Evil Queen and Snow Queen have a fair amount of similarities in their story consistently call the other copies. Soren and Evie were just kind of roped into it. Istg if this were a normal AU E.Q. and S.Q. would just be the worst pageant moms. God forbid this bitch ever meet Elsa.
Also has a weird, blurred relationship with Gil. Both their mother and Gil's father were disapproving of their past relationship (albeit for different reasons), the stress of trying to have any sort of romantic relationship on the Isle, and Soren's previously mentioned self-sabotaging all got in the way of it actually succeeding. I'd like to imagine they end up together post-D3, though.
I've been going back and forth on making King Candy/Turbo from Wreck-It Ralph his father purely for the lols. I don't know what exactly his relationship with his father would be, but I don't think it'd be a good one. I also want Turbo to have his own son (Toby Tastic is the name I've got so far) so that would mean Soren has a brother, and regardless of Soren's relationship with his father, those two definitely wouldn't be close.
Side-note, I haven't had the chance to design any actual looks for them in paper, but once I get the chance, I'm definitely going to include a slight affinity for fur in all/most of their outfits. Which I SWEAR was completely unintentional on the Carlos opposition end of things XD
@frenchgirltalya idk if you'd like to be tagged in this but here's some more information on my main Descendant OC that I keep bringing up. Thought you'd might like it.

Name: Faoladh, Conroicht
Area of Origin: Ireland
The Faoladh is a non-hostile werewolf found in ancient Irish folklore, believed to protect children and stand guard over wounded men. Prior to the late 1700s when they were eradicated from the country, wolves were widely seen in Ireland, and were prominently featured in their mythology and folklore. Tales were told of saints having the power to curse men and women, turning them into wolves for certain periods of time as punishment for unjust deeds or showing signs of what they perceived as disrespect. The Faoladh are particularly prevalent in the folklore of Ossory, a medieval Irish kingdom; now present day County Kilkenny.
