Benvolio’s name means “good will,” which ties into his role as an unsuccessful peacemaker, but can also imply the expectations his parents had for him.

When taken with the “the Montagues emphasize politics over brute force” hc, his name sets out what his parents wanted him to be from the beginning: A diplomatic noble son who would help them accumulate allies through smooth and artificial negotiations. His level-headed pacifism shown in the play does follow that, and contrasts with what the Capulets molded Tybalt to be: A weapon to win duels and bring glory to the family name.

Benvolio was conditioned from the beginning to be a tool for the feud, just as Tybalt was; tools for very different uses, but tools nonetheless.
