/drabble.
It had been quite a long day for Kajira. No jobs means no money. No money means no food. Sure, she could probably talk her way into getting some chow, but where's the fun in that? After scoping out a small tavern, Kajira slipped inside the dimly lit room. Taking a moment for her eyes to adjust, she made her way toward the back of the building. Sounds like the poker game had begun without her. Before entering the room, she peered through the cracked door. Three men sat at a table lined with stained green felt. Kajira pulled her faded black duster closed as she walked into the room. With a loud screech, one man slid his chair back to welcome her. "You here to play, kid?" Some welcome. "No," she began, giving the room a once over, "I'm here to win." "Haha, looks like we got ourselves a cocky one. Grab yourself a chair, little lady, and you'll see how this game is played." And that's exactly what Kajira did. Sitting at the table, she slid a $20 bill toward the older man to her left, who was dealing the chips. "You got a name, lady?" the man asked as he slid some chips toward her. "Sure," she replied, counting the chips. The man scoffed and mumbled something to the dealer. The two of them chuckled to themselves before beginning the deal. Kajira stayed relatively quiet, barely glancing around the table as the cards were dealt. Peering down at the cards before her, she was dealt a king of spades and a ten of spades. After the standard round of betting, the dealer laid down three cards face up on the table. The queen of spades, nine of spades, and two of clubs. With another glance around the table, Kajira noticed that these guys had quite terrible poker faces. There was one whom was grinning ear to ear, another with a frown plastered on his face, and the last with a faint smirk. It was more than obvious who had anything decent. "Ahh, I fold." the man to Kajira's right spat, tossing his cards aside. The dealer nodded before laying down another face up card. An eight of spades. There was a chuckle from the dealer, but that didn't halt Kajira's confidence. "All in." Kajira voiced as she slid her chips to the center of the table. The chip keeper cocked a brow before nodding, sliding all his chips in. "You sure you wanna do that, lady?" "I don't see your chips in there." She had a point and the dealer knew it. With a subtle glare, he slid over $70 worth of chips into the pot. The last card was placed face up. The jack of spades. Kajira's face remained still, she was waiting to see what the two man had. "Shit. All I got is a pair a' nines." these to Kajira's left mumbled. "Full house! I'll be taking those chips." the dealer beamed, reaching out to the pot. Before the man could even touch any of the chips, Kajira pulled a knife from inside her coat, slamming it into the wooden table barely an inch from the dealer's fingers. "Those are mine," Kajira said with a smirk, holding up her two cards, "Straight flush beats your full house." The dealer stared wide eyed at the cards before mumbling some incoherent curses under his breath. "Come back when you learn how to play. In the meantime, I do believe someone owes me some money." The chip keeper counted the chips before handing Kajira over $300 in cash. "Don't you ever come back here again, you bitch!" the dealer yelled. Kajira pulled her knife from the table and pointed it at the dealer. "Noted." She pocketed the cash before slipping out the back door. "Ahh, now to find something to eat. I'm starving!" Kajira said to herself with a laugh. /end ((I don't even. I just wanted to write something, anything. Broke Kaj hustling poker tables is a good thing to write, no?))
