Story Project Statement.

For this project I chose to the quote, Curiosity killed the cat, But satisfaction brought it back. Initially I wanted to focus on the curiosity and exploration as a theme for the quote. But then after designing thumbnails and feedback, it was clear the main probertites of the quote where the words, Curiosity and Satisfaction together. 

During the project I took inspiration from Schrodinger's Cat thought experiment, as it promotes imagery of cats in aspects of life and death all in a veil of the unknown. I also looked into cats cradles as part of my design. As a connected string going through different forms I think of the game being very cyclical, which is why I was drawn to it.

Final Thumbnails

I changed the rock that would crush the cat to a box since I thought the rock would have been to random, while the box is a reference to Schrodinger's Cat

I chose to use the colour orange and yellow, because I was researching them and I found orange represents Curiosity and yellow can represent Satisfaction, which are the 2 concepts I wanted to use in my final design. I also wanted to add a dark colour for contrast so I chose a dark blue since its complementary to orange. While also introducing a level of cool comfortability to the design which I wanted, as I convey a harmonious message of life and death.

I like the “Conviction” and “Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy” for there use of type and the layout of it.

I found the “Knockout” cover interesting 

I wanted to look at book covers with lines/strings to see how they can be used for my design. The examples I found where “The Story of a Brief Marriage”, “The Assosiation of Small Bombs” and “On Trains: An Exploration”.

Poster Research

“La Chat Noir”, Théophile Steinlen's 1896 is a poster for an entertainment establishment in Paris.

I of course looked at this image in my researched for my poster/book cover for the cat.

Changes for Design Feedback

After some feed back I was pointed out to me that the broken glass element I wanted to include in my design would confuse the purpose since it has such a negative connotation. 

So I went back to basics and being inspired by other designs, wanted to focus more on the cat and danger it could probably be in. I want the danger to be very cartoonist and whimsical rather then literal death

Story Mood board

After getting feedback from a peer group discussion I realized I didn't have a clear different with the style I wanted to go with and my concept was missing some elements from my quote.

I didn't have emphasis on the “satisfaction” of the quote, it was suggested to be to look at this part more and I was give a suggestion to look at how cats knock things on the ground, like glass, and how there is great satisfaction of something just shattering. When I looked at pictures of glass it reminded me of the game game cats cradle with the string.

While I was researching on 100 Achieve I found this project “A Sound of Notes and the s paces between” and a picture broken glass that was pink and blue.

Research

When I was scrolling through 100 Achieve I came across this image of broken glass. This is part of the “A Soundscape and the s pace between”. I got inspired by this for my story project since I am looking at broken glass, I really like the pink colour they are using.

Artist Research: June Digann

Common Room,  Ayala Bay branch Mural

When I was researching astist I was drawn to this mural, and expecialy the typography of the words. I love the glow of the words that makes it look like a neon sign.

In response I want to try my hand at the style of the lettering to gave that glow.

Ideas Development Workshop

For the workshop I made another mind map with my quote after more though on the words and research I have done so far.

We had a time limit to make our thumbnails to make sure we didn't overthink to communicate our ideas. Then we critiqued each other's designs and chose what ideas we like the best, to help to develop them in the next stage.

Next we repeated the process to make only 4 larger thumbnails give the advice we got.

The first is me expanding the grave tombstone. I wanted to make it more abstract, I want to represent the concept of life and deal in my quote with the cirle and 2 colour. Red for life and grey for death.

Next thumbnail was continuing with the relating circles and the question mark.

The third thumbnail I was using the cats cradle idea that was liked by the group so make a geometric design. I imagined hands making a C with thread and even did it myself to get the lines right. I like the red in other thumbnails so used it for the thread. This make me think of the red strings of the faiths in Greek Mythology that represents out life lines.

For the last thumbnail I started with the magnifying glass in the middle with dotted lines to reveal question marks. My initial design had the lines horizontal, but the lines reminded me of rain and i thought of a scene in the Matrix where the characters are in a car and it's raining. The rain is green and when you zoom in its actually the code for the Matrix. So I changed the design by making the lines and question marks green on a black background.
