27/04/22 Stencils.

I made stencils from offcuts of photographic paper, using the vinyl cutter.

For the scull I made a vector file from a photograph that I took of a scull sculpture (It was in a gallery in Spain, unfortunately I did not make a note of the artist or gallery!)

For the dancing girl I worked from the one of the first animated gifs ever made [https://blog.geocities.institute/archives/2559].

I took one frame of the gif and made two vector files from it to create a two part stencil.

26/04/22 More Metal Hands.

I cut up two large coffee cans to make some more metal hands. I removed the text and logos from the metal using a grinder, and then cut them up with tinsnips.

26/04/22 Aluminum Wings

I cut out lots of aluminum feathers and fixed them to the mechanical head piece using rivets, staples and wire, thereby converting it into a pair of wings. I used aluminum reclaimed from beer cans and photo litho plates .

07/04/22 Rusty Hands.

I left the metal hands outside for a week or so, periodically coating them in vinegar to make them rust more quickly.

I riveted the hands to onto an aluminum tube and mounted the whole thing on to a salvaged piece of stone/cast iron.

05/04/22 Stencil of Rodin's 'The Thinker'

I made a stencil of 'The Thinker'. Using a photograph for a reference image, I created a vector file in Illustrator. I cut the stencil with the vinyl cutter.

05/04/22 Driftwood and offcuts.

I stuck the offcuts of willow onto a piece of driftwood.

05/04/22 Sculpture that can be fixed to the body.

I made an inner structure that can be worn on the head, using aluminum and rivets . Then I fixed willow whips to it, using thin black wire, and put a spiral of silver wire around the whole thing.

31/03/22 Metal flower and stencil.

1. A flower made from the offcuts of metal left over after cutting out metal hands.

2. Stencil of hands on aluminum sheet. I made the stencil using the vinyl cutter.

29/03/22 Hands.

Using a sharpie, I drew around my hands on metal cut up from old coffee cans. I cut the hands out with tinsnips. I photographed the hands, edited the photo in Photoshop, made a gif and also exported a vector file to use with the vinyl cutter.

22/03/22 Sculpture that can be fixed to the body.

I used reference images from the book ‘The Louvre - European Sculpture’. I was looking for distinct silhouettes. Using scissors, I cut the parts out of aluminum reclaimed from beer cans and assembled the piece using rivets.

01/03/22 More pinhole camera photos.

I took some pinhole camera photographs in the corridors of the college. The exposure times were long (1 to 3 minutes) and because of this the photographed spaces look empty, although there were people moving through them. In some of the photos I stood/sat in frame long enough for my own image to be captured.

27/02/22 Bleached Cyanotype Experiments.

I tried bleaching and recoloring some cyanotypes. First I washed the cyanotypes in soda crystal solution to remove the blue colour. I then soaked the prints in various solutions (tea, green tea and coffee) to re-colour. I also cut two of the cyanotypes up so that I could have colour variations, and then stuck them back together. Bob introduced me to this process and I used suggestions from the book Experimental Photography - A Handbook of Techniques for the colour solutions.

21/02/22 Zine Update

I re-edited the zine, adding more elements including drawings, photoshop edits, scans of hardware and quotes from inspirational artists (and Phil Collins).
