The Tomb, Paul Thek
Alien encounters are a phenomenon of marking - pins on the map of an emotional landscape that you'd been moving through but didn't realize had a shape. Despair's a maudlin ecstasy of baroque romanticism. You wait for signs

It is necessary to combine the optical-sound image with the enormous forces that are not those of a simple intellectual consciousness, nor of the social one, but of a profound, vital intuition.

“The Yamato spirit is not a tame, tender plant, but wild--in the sense of natural--growth; it is indigenous to the soil; its accidental qualities it may share with the flowers of other lands, but in its essence it remains the original, spontaneous outgrowth of our climate” [finished on: 02/12/18]

Vagabond, Agnes Varda 02/11/18 I’m once again awe struck by Agnes Varda. Vagabond held a mirror up to my face so unexpectedly that I was caught, dumb-founded yet highly amused by its grace and sincerity. So many times I’ve wished for Mona’s piercing wit in the face of oppression; her attitude reminds me how hard it can be sometimes to be honest- to yourself and to others. The other characters notice this too, whether they like her or not, they submit to her in some way. All these feelings are paired with the information we get in the first sequence of the film— her death. That bit of knowledge brings complexity to everything else experienced throughout the movie. Now I can’t wait to watch Happiness and everything else she’s ever made.
