I’m frustrated with how they keep making “break the fourth wall” jokes that directly state the dynamic of Joel and Ellie’s relationship. It completely takes away the gravity of Ellie’s conflicting guilt and grief.

The audience is not dumb, let them simmer in the uncomfortableness of Joel’s death and Ellie’s anger.
