marcus pulled a small bottle of advil from his bag and shook it in kade’s direction. “don’t need water when you can dry swallow pills,” he responded before dumping a couple into his hand and swallowing them. “speaking of looking like shit, you don’t look so swell either. what, your little pal you were all over at the dance turn you down?” marcus asked, raising an eyebrow. he didn’t care if kade had time for his usual shit, he was going to pull it anyway.
kade’s eyes widened slightly, caught off guard by the other male’s words. though, he managed to stay calm. “turn me down?” he simply gave a puzzled look as if he didn’t know what marcus was talking about. “you’re talking about fox, right? fox is straight and my best friend. i didn’t get turned down for anything. i don’t know what you’re talking about.”

rosalina: uh bullshit
rosalina: the person you say is "just your friend" is the one you catch feelings for.. 94% of the time at least
kade: i'm trying really hard not to catch feelings tbh
kade: i don't need the drama
kade: what did you see at the dance?
marcuslowell:
marcus had forced himself to come to school on time the day after the dance, despite the pounding in his head and the dark circles forming under his eyes. he’d kept to the sidelines throughout the dance, just taking swigs from a flask he’d brought and watching everything play out for his fellow students. he had paid particular attention to kade, a regular victim of marcus’ torment. as he rummaged through his bag for painkillers, kade knocked into him. “yo, what the-” he spoke, at first not noticing who it was. “oh, kade. what the fuck, man?”
kade was less than thrilled to see who, exactly, he had the pleasure of running into. “whatever sort of snyde, sarcastic remarks you may have for me, save it. i’m running late, and i don’t have time for your usual shit.” kade was feeling a bit more bold than usual, partly from his pounding headache from the shitty punch at the dance. “you should grab some water or something. you look like hell.”

kade: can i talk to you about something if you promise not to say anything to anyone else???
@marcuslowell
kade made his daily trek through the halls of westport high school, keeping his eyes down low. honestly, his head was still reeling from the night before. the dance, itself, was pretty uneventful in his eyes. though, he was unsure about whatever was going on with fox. lost in thought, kade didn’t notice the person just ahead of him, only to slam into them. the force knocked the dark haired male back a bit. kade simply shuffled his papers, glancing up at marcus. “jesus... sorry. i wasn’t watching where i was going. my bad.”
fcxs:
“yeah.. i guess you’re right. that’s what i’ve been doing, i think.” he wasn’t sure if kade was simply telling fox how he lived his life or was not so subtly calling him out for not doing so himself. fox strived to be his most genuine self, so much so that he horded his own time from the people of his past. finding a rhythm proved to be the easy part, but with the swarm of people and the music cranked loud enough to be heard over the student body he ducked his head to listen to kade speak. “thanks for what?” he asked, not at all certain as to what he was being thanked for. “yes, put highschool dancing on my resume and i might just get into an ivy league.”
kade tried to stand up a little taller, attempting to speak into the other male’s ear. he could feel himself smirk as his lips traced along fox’s skin every now and then between words. “thank you for dancing with me. i was pretty sure you’d just shoo me away from the punch bowl to find someone else to dance with.” he watched the small flecks of white light dance along fox’s features. “i think dancing is your most notable skill.” he gripped fox’s arm as they spoke, trying to steady himself as they danced. “what are we doing after this?”
fcxs:
“yeah, yeah i know. you’ll support all my online content. you love me, i get. we’re best friends..” taking kade’s hand as leverage, fox got back to his feet and let himself be dragged towards the other people who came to the dance to, well, dance. “you’re probably better off that way, at least everyone’s not psychotically obsessed with who you’re seen talking to in the halls and what that means.” with a shake of his head, fox cradled his camera to his side, more than willing to die before letting any harm come to his equipment. it was far too easy to be engulfed by the sea of bodies and as the song switched pace.
“i’ve never been worried about what people think of me. i’ll do what i want. i’ll talk to the people i want. life’s too short to live for someone else. you have to live for yourself.” kade wandered through the seething crowd of bodies, leading the other male out onto the dance floor with a grin. as the music played, he could feel the vibe of the art institute completely switch. the lord huron song echoed through the open space as kade turned to face his friend. “thank you... by the way.” the dark haired male stepped closer, letting his hand trail along fox’s side. the lights danced along their silhouettes as they danced. kade thought to himself how it would make a perfect photo. “you’re not half bad, handsome.”
fcxs:
“sounds fake, feels fake - all i’ve done is regressed into an old man who’s actually sitting at a dance. oh, i thought it was because you were gay, maybe i misread that. sorry.” fox circled his free hand around kade’s slim wrist. “you better turn off ad blocker for me. i’ll die if you don’t. you and sox have the same personality. but this isn’t the time to talk about your cat. go dance. it’s not some fancy new york night club but i’m sure if you wade to the center you can find someone who’ll give you ecstasy.”
“it’s not fake.” there wasn’t much more he had to say about it. he glanced down at fox’s hand, biting his lesser lip slightly. fox seemed a little more than friendly tonight. “it’s definitely because i’m gay.” he had half a mind to say something along the lines of ‘i’m beginning to wonder if the same holds true for you’, though he kept his mouth shut. perhaps, it was time to put it to the test. “i don’t want to dance with some stranger on ecstasy.” holding out his hand, kade flashed the other male a bright smile. “dance with me?”
fcxs:
“you should go find her then, have a real good time.” fox muttered as he finished the punch. as much as he would have loved to join his peers in drunken debauchery, the sugar in the drink decided that that would not be so. placing the cup on the table’s edge, he sat with hands in his lap ( as it is impossible to look brooding when vaping ), waiting for the dark haired male to make his decision. deflating rather easily, fox sighed. “i’m not interested in a girlfriend. if anything i’ll get a dog - learn what true happiness is and become one of those lame youtubers who fake being happy for ad money. you’d support me right?”
“i’m okay. i’m having a good time with you. she can have her fun... wherever she is.” the boy tapped along the table, finding a familiar beat as he got lost in thought. he had plenty on his mind. his eyes drifted up to meet the other male as a small smile pulled onto his features. “i’d support you. girlfriends are overrated. you’re right. you’d be happier with a dog. that’s why i don’t have a girlfriend.” he couldn’t help but laugh at the remark. “that’s why i have sox. she’s the only woman i need.”
fcxs:
“have i told you that you should be a detective once we graduate? your deductive skills are unparalleled.” fox was pleased to see that whoever was supposed to be working the punch had long given up. unhooking his arm from kade, he circled the table and plopped down in the open seat, grabbing one of the pre-filled cups. “we don’t have any history, we’re just neighbors.” the punch was way too sugary but the splashes of miscellaneous vodkas and, what he briefly contemplated might have been gin, made the overall drink more palpable. “intangible, huh? all you have to do is break things apart, i know you, you’ll figure it out.” he leaned back in the folding chair when the question was turned on him. “in the simplest of terms.. i’m just looking for anything better.”
kade was sensible enough to know that he didn’t need anymore punch. while fox chose one of the seats that line the punch table, he merely stood with his arms crossed over his chest. “i see. aubrey’s really cool. i always have fun when she’s around. i can’t imagine what she was like before.” he shrugged off the thought, knowing he shouldn’t be talking about aubrey when she wasn’t around to defend herself. “let’s hope so.” there wasn’t much more he wanted to say about the subject. “better? well, there’s plenty of places better than westport. you need to find yourself a decent girlfriend, graduate high school, and leave this god-forsaken place. does that sound better?”
