“For God does speak, now one way, now another, though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds.” Job 33:14-15 NIV
God still speaks, present tense, right now, in your kitchen, in your car, and yes, even in your bed at 2am when you thought the whole house was still and nothing was happening. We’ve been taught to look for Him in the loud places, so we want the fire and the shaking floor and the shout, but Job is telling us that revelation doesn’t always arrive with thunder attached to it. Sometimes it comes in a dream, sometimes it comes in a vision of the night, and sometimes it comes when deep sleep has fallen on you and you have no strength left to perform, no energy left to pretend, and no grip left to hold onto control.
Notice something, because it says now one way, now another, and that means God doesn’t use one method. Numbers 12:6 tells us that when there’s a prophet among the people, the Lord makes Himself known through visions and speaks through dreams, so this pattern isn’t strange or new, it’s simply how heaven has always communicated whenever earth was willing to be quiet long enough to listen.
Remember Elijah in 1st Kings 19. The wind tore through the rocks and God wasn’t in the wind. The earthquake shook the ground and God wasn’t in the earthquake. It was only after the noise settled that Elijah heard a gentle whisper, and that whisper is what lifted him off the floor of despair and put him back on his assignment. Remember young Samuel in 1st Samuel 3, not even old enough yet to recognize the voice of God, and it’s in his sleep that the Lord calls his name until he finally answers, speak Lord, for Your servant is listening. Think about Jacob running from his brother in Genesis 28, exhausted and alone with a rock for a pillow, and it’s in that low and broken moment that heaven opens up and a ladder appears between earth and glory. Think about Joseph in Matthew 1, engaged to a woman who’s pregnant and not by him, wounded and planning to walk away quietly, and it’s in a dream that an angel gives him the word that redirects his whole life and carries the salvation of the world along with it. Think about Paul in Acts 16, wandering and uncertain about where to preach next, and it’s in a vision of the night that a man from Macedonia calls him into a whole new continent for the gospel.
Somebody reading this today has been so busy chasing an answer in the daylight that you missed the fact that God has been trying to meet you in your midnight. You have been striving and performing and trying to earn a breakthrough with noise and hustle, and God is saying to you exactly what He said all along in Job 33, that sometimes He speaks when you are at your weakest, sometimes He speaks when you finally stop trying to hold everything together, and sometimes He speaks only after deep sleep has forced you to let go.
This doesn’t mean to chase every dream as though it’s automatically the voice of God, because Habakkuk 2:2-3 still instructs us to write the vision and test it against His word and wise counsel. But it means to stop assuming your quiet seasons are empty seasons. Your midnight isn’t wasted time, it’s meeting time.
So slow down long enough to notice what God has been saying in the seasons you assumed were silent. Get still the way Psalm 46:10 instructs you to, be still and know that He is God, and let Isaiah 30:21 remind you that whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a word behind you saying this is the way, walk in it. God isn’t finished speaking to you, and He doesn’t need your noise to do it, He only needs your surrender.
