his knee jerking slightly at the mention of his mother. “of course she’s an extraordinary woman,” he says, brushing off her attempt at crawling even deeper into his skin, “she had me.” he presses down on the gas pedal and takes off quickly before he could do anything else. he remembers the special care his mother has always given to kaeun – the little trinkets, get-well cards and baskets, even calls to shinwoo asking things such as, what would kaeun like? how the hell is he supposed to know?
“she’s the mayor’s wife,” he says as a smirk crawls his way up to his face, “so she needs little charity cases now and then to be entertained.” the car rolls slowly to a stop sign, and that’s when shinwoo decides to finally take a look at kaeun. he slides his sunglasses down to the tip of his nose, so his eyes can get a clear view of kaeun – from her begrudgingly attractive face (though, shinwoo is much better looking) to the mess she’d probably refer to as ‘shoes.’
he pouts mockingly. “and darling, you need all the help you can get.”
“did you not hear what i just said? i asked for fifteen seconds, only fifteen seconds of civility, and yet here you are, being the biggest cunt in the universe. so how many times do i need to tell you to shut your fucking cunt mouth?” she’s not actually upset, not in the slightest, but dealing with shinwoo is much easier when she gives him the chance to think that he has the upper hand. it’s something that most people want in this town; dominance, control over others, a hidden ace up their sleeve. “sure, keep telling that to yourself. maybe then it’ll finally come true, but for now, you’re just a boring cunt who looks awful in pink. it’s almost paradoxical but there’s nothing that i can do about it.”
yet she doesn’t just stop there, doesn’t stop because she can’t let him win. “however, i do know someone who actually looks amazing in pink. you know sanha, right? well next to him, little boy, you look like a...” she trails off, running her tongue across her bottom lip before pulling a tube of lip-gloss out of her purse. pink of course. “well i’m not sure why anyone would want to look at you when sanha is around. and although you keep saying that you’re the best, you fail to realize that your words only display your crippling insecurities.”
kaeun leans back in her seat, muscles relaxing in a brief instant as she lets out a satisfied sigh and applies a new coat of gloss, giving her lips a plump shape and a dazzling glow. “truthfully, i’d actually consider you her only flaw. everything she does is splendid and everything she creates takes my breath away...”
“and then we have,” she scrunches up her nose as she focuses her eyes on him, muttering only a single word, “you,” she says it with an expression that could only be reserved for tasting bland and awful food, perhaps even something incredibly sour. “but i do hope that you also know that you wonderful mother had to get fucked so she could have you. so really, i wouldn’t call you her greatest achievement.”
her lips curl into a coy grin once more and so she turns her head away, rejecting the notion and pain of dealing with his obnoxious and intolerable persona. if he’s so bold and brave to call her vexing, then how does he even behave when he faces his own reflection in the mirror? “whatever you say. i’ll never say no to spending time with your mother. now be mommy’s good little boy and keep driving.”
