The more I think about it the more Ash’s death is stupid and flawed. Reasons are
1. He is stabbed in broad daylight somewhere near, or quite possibly right nearby the library (the wall Lao collapsed on is the same colour of the library building).
2. Based on the above fact, Ash was stabbed in the middle of the street. Even if no one was on the street, there are people walking from across the road? There are cars?
3. You might argue well he was stabbed inconspicuously. Except Ash pulls out a gun and shoots Lao. There’s a gunshot. In a city that would reverberate and echo loudly (I’m assuming). So someone would definitely come to investigate. Even if they don’t come straight away, Ash is wounded and you can see he is in no hurry to walk away from Lao’s body. So like????
4. Even if no one came to see what happened, Ash is hunched over and staggering his way to the library. Yeah he has a black turtle neck so seeing the blood would be difficult except that he holds his wound with his hands. Blood is going to be seen on his hands because he gets it on the letter. Even if he hides it with his coat, the blood will transfer from his hands to the edges of his coat. You’re not going to be careful about getting blood everywhere when you’ve been stabbed.
5. He’s holding the letter which has blood on it from his hands as he walks into the library and sits down. And no one is like ??? Why is that dude staggering and got blood on his hands? Not one fucking person even questions it?
6. Lastly don’t even get me started on the librarian lady.
If his death wasn’t so flawed, I could perhaps accept his death as part of the narrative and even though it would be fucking sad, it would be justified (actually no, it still isn’t but I’m not even going to bother going into this). It’s a poorly written death scene and yeah I’m just going to pretend I didn’t see it.
