On the night their mother had been so late coming home, Sumi was one of the first to be attacked by the demonized Shizu. The shock and pain of her wounds knocked Sumi out cold, but unlike most of her siblings, she had taken a lighter blow and remained breathing. Though her wounds were terrible, she was able to hold on to her life that night and was found weak, but alive by her eldest brother when Sanemi returned to the house.
She woke up in a community clinic a few days after the incident, remembering very little about the attack, as it had all happened so fast. Sanemi told her only that the two of them and Genya had survived, but that Genya had run away, and that their mother was dead. Heartbroken, Sumi mourned their family and slowly recovered from her wounds. Once she was healed, she and Sanemi left their home town together.
Sumi stayed mostly unaware of Sanemi's nightly hunts for demons, often left behind at shelters to rest. She found out when she followed him one night and saw him taking down a demon that had gotten too close to where they had been staying. The sight reminded her of the night their siblings were killed and she realized it that moment that it had been their own mother that had attacked them. It made her scream in sorrow, catching her brother's attention and the whole truth of that night was finally told to her.
Sumi insisted on learning to fight with Sanemi and, despite her brother's protests, she did end up fighting demons as well, determined to avenge their mother and their lost siblings.
Eventually, Sumi followed her brother into the Demon Slayer Corps, very much against Sanemi's wishes. Like her brother, she began to learn wind breathing techniques, though she wasn't nearly as physically strong as Sanemi and her own sword skills aren't as heavy-handed. While she does use a sword, she found a way to modify her use of wind breathing to use nichirin fans as her primary weapons.
As of the current timeline, Sumi is a well-practiced Hinoto-ranked slayer. She splits her time between missions and training with the medical team to be helpful in more than just fighting.
