“Human,” Juliet mused as she looked at him.  “How did this happen?”  She honestly did not know what to think.  There was so many ways this could end and she hoped it wouldn’t give him a taste of something he could never have again. That would be heartbreaking.  “I’m glad you’re enjoying the food though…things have definitely changed in the last two centuries.”

“I was talking to a little witch. She was I think trying to get me to fear her or death or something. But my outlook on death is well I died years ago. We’d just be righting a wrong otherwise so I don’t fear it. Besides I used to be a warrior. So she was demonstrating how she would kill me and ended up turning me human. Without the murder portion.” Kai was ready to hate it, being lesser than he was used to, but he didn’t. It wasn’t awful. He didn’t want to stay human for more than twenty-four hours, but for the day it was perfect. “Tastes much better than trying to eat it as a vampire. Julie, I wish you could taste it!” He knew that as a vampire it was dulled down, the experience of the same things wouldn’t quite taste the same.

Luck wasn’t exactly on her side since the last thing she wanted was for a doctor to take her seriously in anything she said. Sure, Nova actually needed therapy but she was used to her comments being so fleeting that slip ups like those made her feel awkward. Stuck. But his words sparked a curiosity into Nova’s face as she tilted her head, “I-I was mainly kidding… I know I should never, uhm, joke about that kind of thing but,” she trailed off briefly before continuing, “W-what do you mean by that?”

“Joke about what you want. People these days are far too sensitive. You aren’t hurting anyone with your joke. If your sanity is funny to you, laugh about it. It might actually be healthy.” Kai smiled at the girl when she asked her question. “I just mean that everyone has their hang ups. And I’ve seen so much of the world to know that I and my years of existing still struggle with different things.” He wasn’t excluded from not being exactly a well put together package.

Kai Papoa was eating honest-to-God human food in her own establishment, a sight Tegan never thought she’d see in her immortal life. Not that she’d ever actively thought about it, but this occurrence seemed so completely unlikely that she never thought she’d have to waste any time thinking about it. “An adorable little demon?” Tegan quirked an eyebrow. “Food tasting good? Those aren’t what I imagined your thoughts would be about this situation in which you are now ridiculously vulnerable for twenty-four hours.”

“Yeah she was a little witch. She told me that she was demonstrating how she was going to kill me, and well she turned me human and then gave me a Dorito. Which by the way those are incredible.” He never felt happier than stuffing his face while sitting at a table with bad human vision and ears that couldn’t pick up sounds from farther distances. His shoulders rose and fell. “When I was human, my dad raised me to be nothing short of a warrior. I saw the battle field with none of this fancy technology. I’m not afraid. I can still be just as fierce with a beating heart.” That was something that he hadn’t had in such a long time.

“Cry me a river, I’ve got you beat on that,” She countered, sliding into the booth and taking a seat across from him. “I don’t even remember what rissoles or pate even tastes like,” she mused, flipping open the menu and skimming the fatty meats and deep fried foods offered. “I’m more of a B-Positive myself. What made you human for the day?”

Kai’s brow rose. “Who’s crying?” He loved his vampirism and didn’t care for it not being present because he wanted to eat. He could care less about all that. “I’m more an O-Negative kinda guy. But less a what and more a who. There’s a little demon running around here adorably devious. She wanted our fight to be even but instead we murdered some food rather than each other.

“Wait-” Noah said, quickly sliding into the booth across from Kai the second he saw the pile of food in front of his face. “You need to try this snickers now!” He said shoving the bar over to the big man, remembering their last conversation, before adding, “Pizza. I a man of simple taste.”

“Now’s the time of any to give me a snickers while I can actually appreciate it.” Kai thought for a minute. “Hold on why do you…” he shook his head wondering how this man just had this candy readily available. “Pizza and a snickers bar are your recs? What kind of pizza?”

Brianna had just gotten done doing a ten hour surgery and her feet were entirely sore. She just needed to take a short power nap. So she headed into the next on call room and took her shoes off. When she heard the door open she sighed quietly loudly, “ Please tell me you’re not here for me. I swear I haven’t heard my pager go off…” She told the person who was coming in.

Kai shook his head when he’d come into the room. He hadn’t been expecting to see anyone in it but he didn’t mind. “Actually, I come in here to hide. Everyone knows to look for me in my office so I come here for some peace.” He wasn’t much a people person, even if he did work in the field full of people. “Rough shift?”

Looking down at the massive man, Victoria blinked. She didn’t want to admit it, but she’d been rather startled by his random question. Running her tongue along her lips, she slipped her phone into her back pocket, delaying the text she’d been working on. “Dungeness Crab, heated, and cracked,” she explained. “Served with some sort of dipping sauce, though I prefer hot butter.” The succubus shrugged. “You’ll never taste better.”

“That sounds pretty good. You know where I can find this kind of meal you speak of around here? I’m kind of on a time limit. My hours of humanity are quickly ticking away.” He never realized how fast time passed when he was indeed on a timeline.

Colliding with someone so large actually caused Nova to almost feel disoriented as she tried to remain rooted to where she stood post collision. Why couldn’t anyone just be average size? Why’d everyone had to be part giant? It didn’t help that she was small in size but she knew that it would have hurt less if the man was more the size of sapling instead of a redwood. “Ye– mhm. I was… I kind of was in a rush as well so it’s not exactly the best combination,” she admitted as she looked up at the color changing sky briefly before looking back at the man, “Physically? I-I don’t believe so. Mentally? That’s questionable,” she attempted to joke but only exuded awkwardness as she bit the inside of her cheek.

He smiled at her explanation and nodded, but actually chuckled when she said that she was might me questionably hurt mentally. “Well as a doctor, I’m glad phsyically you didn’t run into me bounce back and hurt something. But I’m no therapist but we’re all a little mentally questionable. I’m just slightly more sound on the outside so most people don’t know,” Kai admitted. Everyone had at least a small bit of discontent in their mental states.

“Probably not, no. But, hey- at least it makes it an even fight, right?” Carter told him with a little grin. She had never been one to run away from a challenge, even if she did prefer to take the easy way out most of the time. And when Kai said the next thing, Carter couldn’t help, but let out a little laugh. “We won’t have to get you a pair of glasses now, will we, Big Guy?” She asked, finding his reaction to the taste of food amusing. “Really? Well, I mean if you like these, you’re gonna love french fries. Oh! And burgers. You look like a burger guy,” She told him, hopping down from the ledge she had been sitting on and taking his hand as she pulled the man nearly twice her size in the direction of the diner. “Come on. It’s this way. I’m Carter by the way,” She said with a little shrug.

“It does, but I would have even gotten down on your level for this fight,” he teased. Even if he kneeled he wasn’t so sure he’d be on her level, but he could make her believe it. The girl was tiny. But her personality seemed to make up for the lacking in height. “Nah I’m A-Okay. Just it looks like I’m looking through a veil by comparison to what I’m used to.” He was out of touch with humanity. Which was a funny thought considering he worked with humans quite often. “I won’t know if I am until I have one,” he said then. “I haven’t really indulged in food anymore. And I can’t really remember it like it used to be.” He chuckled as she led the way. “Nice to meet you. I’m Kai, though I prefer to call you Little Demon.”

“Darling,” Nina paused, her eyes dropping down to the plate in front of the built man. He was a brute if she ever saw him, and scarfing down a burger and fries didn’t help his case. She barely tried to mask her contempt at how he threw himself into his food, how ravenous he was for what seemed like either no or a very unusual reason. “My favorite food is not allowed on the menu. What is going on, were you made in a petri dish and this is your first time experiencing food?”

“More like I haven’t been able to enjoy this type of food in roughly two hundred and fifty years, more like it. So you could say that this is the first time in centuries that I’m experiencing food,” he said honestly. “What’s your favorite food that’s not allowed on the menu?”

“Jalepeño cheddar Cheetos,” Tae replied immediately, hearing the question before he saw the man. He recognized Dr. Papoa, the man who had removed his tonsils six years ago but was surprised to see him horking down food like there was no tomorrow. “Whoa, hey doc! Wait, are you saying I get to prescribe you this time? Alright, stay seated.”

Tae slid into the seat across from Dr. Papoa and opened the menu. “Okay, chili cheese fries with pickled jalepeño. Then, peanut butter milkshake. These things weirdly go well together when they go down, but later– you know what, never mind. Next, you’re gonna want the BLT but with avocado slices in it. Side of hot sauce. You getting this down?”

Kai listened when he said Jalepeño cheddar Cheetos. That sounded like an interesting mixture of things. Cheddar, whatever a cheeto was and jalepeño. He saw the bags in the stores and when kids had them before checkups. But he’d never tasted them. He did have to chuckle at Tae’s words though. “You do, and I’ll blindly trust that I’m in good hands just like you trusted that I’d make your tonsillectomy was going to go seamlessly.” Granted, he was the doctor so most people did trust what he said. And he’d seen a lot of things so none of them really too new.

“Okay, they go well together? Or are you trying to ironically make me have to visit the hospital?” He barked out a laugh at the change. “So chili cheese fries with pickled jalapeños, a peanut butter milkshake and a BLT with avocado slices and hot sauce. I can get sick in this twenty-four hours, I hope you know. Is this payback for the tonsillectomy? Because I can remove some other organs,” he joked. Though it was a darker sense of humor.

“Why are you asking me about food?  You don’t even eat food.” Juliet pointed out before she stopped and narrowed her gaze at him.  His heart was beating.  That was something she hadn’t heard in literal centuries.  “Wait…why is your heart beating?  Kai what is going on?”

“I can today, Julie.” He was practically beaming with excitement that he could, in fact eat and taste and enjoy food. When she noticed his heart beating he grinned. “I’m human…for a day. I’ve forgotten so much about being human. Food didn’t taste like this when we were. I can barely remember but I know it didn’t. This is…heavenly.” He marveled at it. At how different things were compared to him being a vampire. It was almost as if he forgot, chucked his humanity aside over the years and never looked back at it.

“Excuse me?” Tegan said in surprise, so shocked she almost ended up with her hands on her hips. Kai, very much a vampire for all of the years she’d known him, was trying to eat actual food? “I’m not going to say there’s anything bad on my menu, but why are you able to eat at all?” 

Kai grinned. It would seem that he was doing a lot of that today. With his crap eye sight and his crap hearing and crap sense of smell the only things that made him smile was his sense of taste. Man, he didn’t remember food ever tasting this good. He practically murdered the french fries drenched in condiments as Tegan spoke. “An adorable little demon did it. She made me human for twenty-four hours and I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember a single thing about food tasting this good.” Granted two hundred and fifty years ago, it probably didn’t. They’ve had much time to improve it. “I didn’t know humans were so blind, deaf and well inept in most things. Or rather I forgot. But they have improved food. I like food! In twenty-four hours I want to try everything.”

Kai was human for twenty-four hours. Twenty four whole hours but what he was spending his time doing was eating. He felt almost like a bottomless pit as he sat, eating a hamburger and french fries. He didn’t remember much about his human life. Not the senses and how dull they seemed. Except that of taste. He loved tasting the food he was eating. He barely realized anyone was walking by. He was curious and in good spirits so he said, “Hey, excuse me, random question but what’s your favorite food? I can taste food and I want to try…everything! So what’s good?”

From the moment that she had been adopted, Lavender had let Nova know that the night of the full moon was always going to be a dangerous time in Shadow Falls but it wasn’t like the girl didn’t know that already. She’d been in an orphanage more than half of her life so far so the nuns hadn’t quite shied away from the same sentiment. They’d tell them all to pray for the fate of their supernatural friends but made it clear that hatred towards them was not the word of god. But as she sat on a huge boulder in the park, camera up to her eye as she focused her shot of an elderly couple by a fountain, Nova still didn’t understand. Sighing to herself, she took the picture and pushed herself off the rock, hopping down with a tiny thud as her boots hit the grass. The sun was going to start setting soon so her time was essentially over. She began walking as she examined the photo but Nova had only taken a few steps before she found herself colliding with a person. At first, she thought it was a tree but boy was she wrong. Still holding her camera, Nova bit her lip as an apologetic look appeared on her face. “I’m sorry,” she stated as her eyes looked down nervously, taking some steps back quickly as she tucked a strand of light blue to dark blue ombred hair behind her ear. “I didn’t… I wasn’t… I’m so sorry.”

Kai had been momentarily distracted by his phone. He had a bunch of interns under his care and one of them had been taking it hard that they didn’t do so well on their cadaver. He was just glad that it wasn’t a real person, they’d feel a whole lot worse. But it was the group’s first day and he wanted to warm them up on a cadaver before letting them loose on his patients. He was typing quickly back to console the poor kid, which was a feat because he wasn’t very sympathetic, compassionate, or sometimes he wasn’t even nice. That was when something collided with him. He looked away from his phone and down to see a young woman. “It’s cool. Don’t worry about it. I’m guess you were distracted. So was I,” he explained. “You’re not hurt are you?”

This was typical of the blonde, taking the day off after the Full Moon. Maybe it was just the intense hunger that she had felt over the past couple of days. But she always felt drained a little bit. Sitting there looking at the paper, that was when she heard someone’s voice and the blonde glanced up from what she was reading. “Sorry, didn’t hear you. Did you need somethin’?” Christiana questioned.

It was a pretty fun house at the coffee shop and Kai was wanting to just grab his laptop out of his bag and take a moment to do some work. He actually liked the chatter around. It wasn’t like he even drank the coffee that he bought. He just did that so he wasn’t being a mooch. But he knew that he just liked to be around people to remind him of what humanity was. He was a doctor after all, he needed to remember that “Not at all. I was just wondering if I could have this seat? It’s a little packed and I was wanting to do some work. Forcibly removing some poor schmuck over there from their seat would be too much when I could just ask,” he explained.

“You’re not wrong in saying that, but isn’t that half of the fun. The thrill of it all when you know something can potentially kill you, but you still do it anyways?” Serena questioned, she crossed her arms over her chest. “I see. What caused her to give out in the first place?” Raising an eyebrow as she eyed the bike, then looked up at him. When he flashed her his fangs Serena smirked wickedly, she let her arms drop. Putting both her hands in her back pockets while she shifted her weight from one foot to another. “Look at me getting lucky. I’m looking for one that might be interested in biting me. Nothing too crazy. Think you’d be interested?”

“Those that find the thrill in things that could possibly kill them are only excited because they don’t know what death actually feels like. I’m here to tell you, it’s anticlimactic.” He shrugged. He didn’t think himself much of a thrill seeker anymore. The thrill of things that could possibly kill him were long gone now. “No clue to be honest. I’d have to take a more in depth look at it. Could be a number of things. But I’ve got it up and running again. This wasn’t out of the ordinary, not at all. A human wanting to be bitten. “So, I take it you like that feeling?” He moved closer to her. “I might be, but not here. I like to be comfortable when I have a little snack. How’d you like to come back to my place?”
