This trip started with a simple question.
“How soon can I fly the aircraft?”
Clearly someone who is very keen to find out more – first hand.
Flying club Chairman, pilot and aviation enthusiast, charged with the responsibility of choosing the next breed of training aircraft for his club, his call came as a result of much online research.
Now there’s only so much googling a person can do, but the best way to evaluate the latest AQUILA A211 is to fly it.
With a cheap 24 hour return booked with Norwegian Air from Gatwick to Oslo (£65), we were greeted by Eskil Amdal, MD of Aviator Service and AQUILA agent for Nordic and together with Kairos Aviation also for the UK.
Eskil is a very experienced fast jet pilot and has been demonstrating the AQUILA for the last three years.
Since December we, at Kairos Aviation, have formed an alliance with Aviator Service to provide sales, marketing , service and support in the UK.
So this trip was to be also my first “hands on” experience in the AQUILA A211.
(I have previously flown the usual C152, PA 28’s whilst learning to fly and migrated to Commander 114B, Piper Malibu Mirage and Cirrus SR20 and more recently the LSA and PtF aircraft from Europe, Remos GX , PS-28 Cruiser).
We arrived at Oslo international with plenty of time to head the 30k South to Norway’s oldest airport, travelling in Eskil’s brand new BMW i3 – all electric car. Another first for me. Very impressive speed, acceleration, smoothness and oh yes, very very quiet.
(Norway has got it right. For electric cars - No car tax, no VAT, plenty of recharging stations and smart phone apps telling you where the nearest station is, how much power you have and how far you can go!)
Anyway back to the A211.
Oslo Flyveklubb based at Kjeller Airport ENKJ ( 20k North of Oslo) is a busy 500 member flying school and had just taken delivery some weeks earlier of their brand new AQUILA A211 with analogue panel.
At about 5pm Eskil and our customer pre-flight checked the aircraft in the hangar. It was quite cold outside, (2 degrees and getting colder) and snow forecast overnight.
At first glance this is an aircraft with a very long wing – and the profile of a bird – I should say Eagle at this point (Italian for Eagle is Aquila) but to me it looks more like the elegant wing of a slender seagull.
Little things mean a lot. For example, the smoothness of the canopy catch – it opened as if the catch was made of liquid silk. Firm, smooth, no rattling.
A very spacious cabin, clearly laid out panel, lots of room for two adults and space for 40kg of luggage behind the seats, accessed from the inside or by a very handy side panel on the port side.
Doing the external checks we removed the bright red “gloves” protecting the winglets from hangar rash. This wing really is beautiful. Very slender and angled both dihedral and rake – juts right.
In my experience of selling and flying other lighter weight RTC or PtF aircraft, it’s the undercarriage and in particular the nose gear that can come in for some punishment by students and pilots who misjudge speed, height and attitude and land heavily or nose gear first. Other aircraft simply break, taking the prop and the engine with it adding to the hefty insurance fix with weeks off line.
However, this aircraft has been designed for training from the very start. You can see that in the design, construction and materials used for the gear.
Checking the oil level was simple, with an easy access panel into the engine cowling. It was whilst we were looking into the engine bay that Eskil pointed out the massive amount of access space around the engine making it very easy for technicians to access all areas.
With the aircraft ready to go, and pushed back out of the hangar, our customer was first to fly.
Only he will be able to tell you his story.
However, as he taxied back after about an hour of flying, I asked him what he thought.
“I love it, it’s spot on for what we need. Great visibility. Firm, balanced flight controls, predictable and demonstrable effects of primary and secondary effects.
Easy to taxi, plenty of room inside…..”
OK so now my turn.
With daylight fading fast and a snow storm forecast sometime during the evening, it was time to take to the skies.
Sitting in the right hand seat is not something that I am used to. However, AQUILA have installed a simple but effective “pop up” panel mounted wire frame which allows either pilot to centre the aircraft for take off and landing so that there is no parallax adjustment required. This is a training aid and once practiced a few times, visual and muscle memory takes over and the centre line becomes second nature. (I haven’t seen an aircraft with this before. Is so simple but very effective).
With fine pitch selected (variable pitch prop is standard) the Rotax 912S powered up smoothly and before long, the nose wheel was off at about 45 knots and we climbed out at 65knots.
Now I could wax lyrical about the location, climbing out towards a setting sun turning left downwind to cross the fjords and snow capped mountains in the area … but I won’t.
This aircraft was a dream to fly.
Smooth, taught controls with positive resistance.
Once trimmed for a speed, to correct any pilot induced change in pitch (both up or down) you simply need to relax on the stick and the aircraft descended or climbed back to its original attitude and speed.
The wings/elevator combination is designed perfectly to create that almost perfect aerodynamic stability.
I tried a slow stall.
Power right back, pitch up – stick almost in my belly. Plenty of advance warning pre stall. Sloppy controls, vibration, stall warner and eventually the stall itself. Slow nose first – no wing drop and without any power applied, a recovery within less than two seconds thanks again to the aerodynamic stability.
Next an accelerated stall. Eskil is in charge of this. Speed set at 100 knots. 60-80 degrees banked turn with a hard – very hard pull back on the stick. 3-5 G’s pulled (more than I had ever experienced) and in that right turn we dropped the right wing, relaxed and centred the controls and the aircraft self stabilised with very little rudder input.
Official night time was five minutes away so we headed back to the airport for a full stop landing. Speed down to the green arc, first stage then full flaps. Adjust power and attitude for 65 knots. Pop up the centre guide and follow your nose all the way down to the numbers.
I have to say that short 20 minute flight was one of the best flights I have experienced, non the least that under the skilful direction of Eskil, I learned what this aircraft is like from an instructor’s point of view.
We had definitely earned a night out in the capital city. Half an hour later, with the BMW plugged in for it’s evening meal, we walked across the old harbour to our restaurant just as the snow started to fall.
Perfect end to the day. I’m going again at the end of April with the MD of another flying school.
Personally, I cant wait!
