I saw a really pretty photo of a willow tree on Tumblr that partly inspired this. The rest of it (including the birds) came from a memory of seeing the Palace of Fine Arts for the first time at sunrise and a bunch of birds (swans, actually, but that seemed a bit much) landing on the lake. It was very Disney/Fantasia in a good way. I've also been spending a lot of time with Kay Nielsen's illustrated fairy tales.
