Reference Footage
Whist I was in the stages of constructing my puppet I had also recorded a series of reference footages to help aid me when I begin to animate. This sequence in particular I felt best resembled the few traits and mannerisms of my character.
Personal Comment:
Overall thoughts about the finial edit.
The sound editing was provided by Robyn and the main editing was provided by Elle. The finial edit I had received from Elle was not entirely completed for some reason the sequence I had received from her the time frame was very slow placed. I had asked if there had been any problems whilst exporting or of the time frame was at a different setting. Apparently Elle responded and said that There was no problems with the edit she had. She had tried her hardest to correct this problem but each time I was sent back the footage not much had been improved. As a result the animation is most definitely not up to it’s highest level of quality.
Of course there is many things about this animation I am not happy with especially with my own attributes of the initial 2D animation. There a few things I would like to go back an correct such as re drawing the frames that Robyn a had helped proved me as well as sorting out the time pace of the overall animation.
Throughout these past few weeks of animating it has not been my most successful mentally I have been drained and stressed out about the whole ordeal and had really under estimated the work load I have given myself as a result is it that within the animation and my reflective journals. I am vey disappointed of myself to have not been able to achieve to my full potential and I do feel that I have let my team down. I would like to continue to improve one this animation as a whole to it’s fully potential.
Personal comment: Altercations
I have mentioned previous that I have been under a great deal of stress now that I have had to re do the whole animation sequence now on my own I have come to realise how ambitious this has now become and have underestimated the time I had originally planned to get this polish stage completed. with that I had asked Robyn to help me complete the animation. she was very willing to give me a helping hand. With that as part of the 2D animation I have provided the first and second sequence of the animation as for robyn she was able to complete the third and final sequence.
Understandable the results of the is animation will appear quite differently due to our drawing styles. This is something I would still like to continue to improve after submission but right now I am clad I was bale to get all of the help I need from the group and an happy to see this completed.
Animating progress: Polish
During the polishing stages of the characters performance I was also cleaning up and perfecting the performance of the paper planes. making sure that the pacing is timed efficiently.
Rough sequence completed:
There are many things in this sequence that I am not happy with. but with the crunch of time catching up I really need to push on forward and get onto the stages of the polishing sequence. Right now in this current stage the stress is becoming quite over whelming.
Production progress:
Personal comment: An extra helping hand.
These few weeks I have spent in the animating process polishing the frames. It is has been a roller coaster, with many highs and low points throughout the whole duration of this production. The stress has weighed heavily over me, trying my best to get things completed and to give enough time for Elle to do the colouring. At this current stage I feel very disappointed with myself for not managing my time more efficiently and potentially letting the group down.
Besides that Robyn has recently got in contact with me and just wondering how my progress has been. whilst venting out Robyn was opened to give a helping hand with the polish. Ideally I don't really want to give other members of the group more work to do however at this current stage I need all of the helping hand i can get. Robyn is in a good position whereby she can spare the time to give me a helping hand. Robyn made it clear that she is not overly confident with the line work and has said that the quality would not be 100%.
This I can totally sympathise with and i can understand that the styles of drawings will appear slightly different on the animation. However Im at the end of my rope and I need this to be completed.
I have given Robyn the final sequence of the animation ( The boy is swarmed by the paper planes and eventually making his escape). To give her a helping hand I have sent her the PNG files of the rough animation for her to trace over as well as sending her videos / stills of the initial style frame of the animation.
I do feel a little bit bad to be giving extra work for her however I could not be happier with the support I have been receiving from the team.
Sequence 3:
The boy first encounters the creature. I was quite happy with this sequence i particularly liked the paper planes flying through. likewise the delay reaction from the child was played out nicely.
Sequence 2:
In this sequence the boy is falling into the other world. This sequence contain the secondary pass with now much evenly paced and more fluent movement in the performance.
Animating Process
Secondary Pass
Refining some of the line work as well as incorporating secondary motion. in this circumstances motion of the hair. I have specifically used a different colour just so I have a clear visual of the different types of action taking place on the stage.
Sequence 1: Rough
In this sequence it displays the characters reaction towards the paper airplanes flying out from the book. Whilst this is happening the boy is in a trance.

Personal concerns
Members requesting the Weekly summaries:
It was the day before the hand in (18/05/17) understandably there are only three of us out of the group that have extensions. The other two members would submit there work as usual.
The night before the hand in I had two members requesting me for the weekly summaries (These are specifically the sheets we had to fill in during our friday tutorial sessions) This was a great shock to me. I assumed that everyone had to individually fill out the sheets and evaluate their own progress. For the summaries I had annotated the initial groups progress as well as mine, simply bullet pointing each members main targets they will achieve as well as my own set targets written in depth.
My main concern is that they have just submitted my weekly summaries without making any alterations. A great deal of the summaries I had written was in first person. I was willing to help as long as they change a few things to the sheets. I can only hope they have done so.
Current progress:
with the the short animatic completed and with the CG character animated. Robyn provided me with the png files of the backdrop and character performance. with that in had I can now begin the 2D animation.
For the animation I will be drawing the individual frames on sketchbook pro ( Flipbook) I feel most comfortable working on this platform likewise I am still able to produce a good level of animation in an efficient amount of time to produce.
Rough animation: Personal comment
With the help of my references and previous test footages I was able to proceed with the animation. at this current stage drawing the rough performances.
Producing this whole sequence happened to become quite problematic and had taken me quite amount of time to get completed during these stages I was going under at great deal of stress and mainly worrying about getting this completed to the best of my standards however with the time constraint I had on myself to get this completed on time I thad to come to realise that this animation will not be up to its fullest potential.
Besides that there had been some positive results of the characters performance in some sequences the pacing and overall movement of the performance was displayed quite nicely.
Week 9:
As for 26/03/18 - 30/03/18
Development:
This was the finial week until we break up for easter. With that It was important to address to the group of the work they plan to get completed by the time of our return. As for myself I made plans which I hope to achieve during the holidays.
Plan of action:
- With the rendered background shots provided by Robyn I can begin to animate. At this given time I will work on the frames that only include the performance of the 2D Child.
- Record an array of footages used purely as reference to aid the animation.
Week 8:
Development:
Animating sequence:
I have spent quite some time developing my social network and now it was time to develop my animated sequence. with that in mind

Week 7:
02/04/18 - 06/04/18
Development:
CV tutorial session - Sebastian Owen
Upon this week we had a very insightful tutorial session of how to build a CV and write a cover letter. The tutor was highly informative and It really got me thinking about my future plans after graduation. All which felt a bit daunting yet exciting. I had noted down a great useful tips that will help me to write my Cv and cover letter.
Strengths:
Design card feedback -
During my Friday tutorial session I was able to receive some feedback from my tutor. Helen has ave me some advice about the colour of the main logo and had advised to brighten t=it up, besides that not a great deal was mentioned overall she was impressed with the outcome and believed it best suited my job role as a stop motion animator.
CV tutorial session-
During the tutorial session we had an array of writing exercises of how and what are the essentials of a good CV and the relevant details which are of importance. This which really helped a great deal for me to start thoroughly plan and draft my CV
Plan of action:
- Write the first draft of my CV
- Research other existing CVs
Week 6:
26/03/18 - 30/03/18
Development:
Research business cards:
As part of the research of business cards I simply viewed upon on some existing cards that are accosted within the creative industry, mainly animators. There where many designs I particularly liked and I have implemented some elements into my card designs.
Strengths:
About me page bio-
I was able to write a short yet compelling paragraph of my bio page which will be posted on my official website. In general I can find it difficult to write. especially when writing in first person about yourself. However I was able to pull through.
Producing Business cards-
Not only was I able to decide on a design for the back and front of my business card this would not have been quite as successful with out the various exploration I had produced before hand. I was pleased with the array of potential design ideas all of which had there many pros and cons with the designs format of colour schemes. But overall this made me think broadly and think differently as to how I want to showcase my own brand. All of which I believe has been quite successful in the making and I an very satisfied with the end results. I do however plan to review my card designs in my next tutorial session to receive any feedback.
Aardman placement- showreel feedback
I had some great news referring to the placement opening at Aardman. I got the placement and had also received some constructive feedback from Loyd Price (Head of animation at Aardman features) His feedback was highly informative, he spoke of the many things of my contents that stood out, as well as giving me some advice of other works that did not work as well within the showreel.
It got me thinking a great deal about the kind of the selective content I was showing in my reel, content that worked well and others not as much. Likewise his criticism made me realise realise of some of the changes I can do to improve on to meet up with their expectations and to better show off my potentials in stop-motion animating.
Plan of action:
- Plan and prepare writing a CV have a first draft completed
