“Ariel sold her voice for legs just because of a guy“
Meanwhile Ariel with legs;
Ariel already loved the human world long before meeting Eric (you don’t get a collection like hers overnight) and when she finally got a chance to explore it, she took it.
Ursula made it more about Eric than Ariel ever did.
I had the basic, surface level thoughts about Ariel and the Little Mermaid for a long time (mostly because that all I would see people pointing out and slowly started to believe it), but when I got older, I started looking at it from a different perspective.
Ariel’s for the lonely people and the maladaptive day dreamers who wish they were somewhere else.
How many of you love anime or something like that? How many of you collect merch and/or figurines? And how many of you would want go into your favorite anime and meet your favorite characters, even if it was only for a day?
That was Ariel. She’s a weeb for human stuff.
As a lonely kid who often day dreamed of being sent into her favorite books and shows, and meeting the characters and things that helped me not to be lonely, I understand Ariel.
And wanna know another element that pushed Ariel to want to be a human?
Not feeling accepted by her own father.
While Triton does it from genuine worry, by destroying all of her collection in such a brutal way, the message to Ariel behind that action was: “I don’t approve your interests; I don’t approve your love for a human; I don’t approve you.”
After such an emotional blow, can you blame Ariel for getting desperate, when she feels like she’s not accepted in her own home?
And she STILL tried to argue against Ursula that she still wanted to see her father and sisters… :(
I think this is another reason why Ariel’s tale resonates so much with the trans community: not only changing yourself physically for your happiness, but also the feel of feeling unaccepted and unloved by your family for who you are…
