I am 100% on the bandwagon that says Varian has just a little bit of the moonstone powers due to his father's involvement in the brotherhood (which if we remember Quirin was the one one to go and have a kid after the. Blast???? Idk I still haven't watched this show)

I like to think that his powers woke up when Cass took the moonstone, and was still able to retain a tiny fraction (just enough to make stuff float etc) after the sun drop and moonstone powers were destroyed, because of the moonstone spikes having been infused into the land

Was trying to figure out the most out of pocket "why on earth would you ever say that to someone" line in TTS, not counting the obvious stuff like Cass blaming Raps for being kidnapped or Raps trying to unconditionally absolve Frederick of his guilt at the end of S1 bc both of those are just deflections so that the writers never have to highlight any uncomfortable truths about the characters.

My money's on "it's your mess, but it's my kingdom" which, even when avoiding the logistics of who's at fault, is possibly the worst thing to say to somebody you are actively thwarting the suicide attempt of. Especially if the attempt is rooted in how guilty they feel. Like, in that scenario it doesn't matter if it is all their fault, saying that only serves to reinforce the mindset and not help at all.

Easy substitutes would be "I don't want to see you get hurt" or "I literally have a 0% chance of getting hurt doing this don't worry"

my favorite reading of varian is that he’s just sort of a selfish person who did bad things for selfish reasons. understandable reasons when considering the circumstances? well sure! does that make it all okay? well no! that’s the beauty of it i think. i thinks he’s loving and emotional and caring but he’s also bratty and selfish. i think he reacted the way he did because he’s mentally ill and has serious attachment issues and he did not care about what was a rational response or how it would impact others because he just didn’t care! and well that’s still wrong at the end of the day. the only people that mattered were him & his father. i think he joined up with andrew not out of a care for any sort of cause or care for what damage he’d be inflicting but because he valued andrew because andrew showed him some sort of love and attention. his moral compass really comes down to well am i being taken care of? is there someone who values me? which as understandable (potentially) (depends who you are) and sad as it is it’s a selfish sentiment at its core but i think this is what makes him interesting it’s why he’s so special to me. youre an asshole your loyalty is fleeting and dependent on who’s giving you the most attention at any given time. i hate that i get it but i do

That trip under the castle was the first time Varian had any positive interaction with another person in months. That hug in the boat was the first physical contact (aside maybe some close calls with the guard or even maybe citizens angry at him) he'd had

Varian is so incredibly strong because most fourteen year olds probably would have crumbled apart in that boat when Rapunzel was relieved to see him.

He had already decided/determined he couldn’t trust her but he could use her though, but I do think that’s why he didn’t mind being around her

I think he even had a little fun. He was genuinely interested in the pre Coronan architecture and excited to mention it. For however brief that period was, things probably felt nice. He wasn’t alone or being hunted around the forest
