taking a knife to the muffin he bad brought, zane cuts it in half, pushing the rest towards kenji. âyouâre sharing this with me, by the way. i hope you like chocolate chip.â which was really a rhetorical statement, because who doesnât like chocolate chip? zane had been known to take a baked good or two to go after his shifts, especially the chocolate chip muffins. though he wasnât much of a baker, he did enjoy a baked good or two.Â
maybe it was a bitâŠdangerous to be sitting across the table sharing coffee and a muffin with oneâs ex after basically not speaking for a long time, but then again, zane was a glutton for punishment. still, he tries to distract himself by breaking a piece off the muffin, chewing on it slowly. though all that does is make him choke in surprise when kenji says he looks good, coughing quiet and quickly taking a sip from his own mug to wash the bite down. âuh, sorry. went down the wrong way.â he mumbles half convincingly, shaking his head. âthatâs, uh, really nice of you to offer. i wouldnât wanna do that to you though. you deserve to be paid for your work.â the brunette adds, his gaze moving between kenji and his mug, not quite wanting to look him in the eye. âand thanks. i mean, maybe itâs a little weird, but who doesnât like a compliment, right?â zane asks, cracking a smile. âi guess moorbrooke is. i mean, itâs the only place iâve ever lived.â kenji knew that. there was a lot they knew, and he guessed, didnât know, about each other. a lot of things had changed since they were together, but a lot of things were the same too. ânot that much, really. been through a few jobsâŠlanded here a few months ago. iâm not that exciting of a person, really.â zane shrugs, pausing to sip from his coffee again. âwhat about you? besides the fancy new job. which is pretty cool, if you ask me.âÂ
âwho doesnât like chocolate chip?â kenji lightly chuckled as he reached for his half of the muffin, offering zane a warm smile, âthank you. itâs an honor to share this muffin with you, especially because its chocolate chip.â for a second it felt like everything was normal between the two of them as if their past didnât exist, and kenji briefly lost himself in the normality of it all. when he first entered the cafe, the last thing he expected was to be sharing a muffin with his ex, he half expected zane to walk away from him, yet here they were. it was funny how the universe worked sometimes.Â
then again, perhaps it was terrible for the universe to allow this moment to happen. that thought only further cemented itself when he saw zaneâs reaction to his compliment; clearing his throat a bit, he tries to distract himself by taking a sip of his coffee, and in a way, it also allowed him to partially hide from the other for a second. âmmm.â a soft hum in response to zaneâs apology, giving a little nod, as he continues to take his sip. and just like that the feeling of normality vanished and once again kenji was brought back to the reality around him. âdonât worry about the money,â he gently reassures, âseriously. itâs cool. look at it this way; if i wanted payment, i wouldâve offered you a discounted price and not for free. like i said, the offer is there if you feel comfortable. if not, itâs also okay; it doesnât expire.â he offered zane a warmer smile, lightly laughing at his comment about the compliment, âyeah, itâs pretty weird, thereâs no doubt about it. iâm glad itâs not weird enough that it has you running for the hills,â he admits, clearing his throat a bit, lifting the mug for another sip of coffee. as he listened to zane, he was mixed with feelings. part of his was happy to hear the other seemed to be doing good, way better than when they last were together, and another part was sad that he was right in thinking that ending things with zane was the best decision he couldâve made for the two of them. it was selfish that he didnât really give zane much of a choice in the matter, and here he was sharing a muffin with him; god, kenji hated himself. âiâm happy for you,â kenji replies, honestly, â it sounds like youâve been much better since we last spoke. thatâs awesome. not to mention, this place seems like a pretty great place to work at.â he lets out a small sigh when the question is tossed back at him, giving a little shrug, âiâve been okay. iâve been hunting andrej down, finally found him, now itâs just a matter of rebuilding our bond. heâs so fuckinâ stubborn.â he paused for a second, looking at zane, âi know i have no right to ask you of anything, but, do me a favor? will you please keep an eye on him while youâre around? if you see him acting weirder than usual, um, i still have the same number, please donât hesitate to give me a call. i worry about him; even if he likes to think i hate him.â if anyone understood kenji and his family problems, it was zane. after all, zane had lived in his room, and he had been there to hear the way his parents treated kenji, the way they continued to scream about andrej, and even when heâd be thrown in the basement. he hated it. he hated that he had allowed zane to be around any of it. âalso,â a playful smirk plays on his lips, âif you think my new job is so cool, why donât you stop on by the shop, hm?â he couldnât help himself, he was partially joking with and partly teasing the other now. âif not for a tattoo then for a behind the scenes tour. iâll even let you tattoo one of our fake arms, so you kind of get a feeling of what itâs like if youâre up for it.â and then, for whatever reason, the words tumbled out of his mouth before he could stop himself, âitâs honestly the least i could do for being the worlds biggest asshole to you. which, by the way, iâm...really sorry about. i know it doesnât make up for it, but...i am very, very sorry...â
