My ongoing projects and inspirations

While i was in Paris i was lucky enough to be able to explore some of the vast underground network that is “The Catacombs” i was underground for about 9 hours which wound up being one of the coolest experiences of my life, seeing human remains scattered everywhere, subterranean rogue art galleries, a library, statues, and murals, that probably took weeks to complete. Rooms that people dug out and decorated themselves, but for now, i’m just posting a small portion of photos from the “Cinema Room”. The Paris Catacombs are an amazing, elaborate, giant, underground museum of history and art. Every room has a story,  Also known as “The City of Darkeness Beneath The City of Lights”.

The attitude that nature is chaotic and that the artist puts order into it is a very absurd point of view, I think. All that we can hope for is to put some order into ourselves.

I have mixed feelings, but overall I would say that they should not be allowed to use performance-enhancing drugs. Athletics are supposed to showcase an athlete’s natural talent and intense dedication to their sport. Things like steroids give an unfair advantage that they would not normally have. Safe or not, unless these drugs were minor, like supplements, I feel like it could defeat the purpose of athletics. However, if the performance enhancing drugs were readily accessible to athletes/teams, and incorporated into the sport it would be more acceptable (like if it was taken into account that players were using the drugs). Safety would mean that these drugs had been properly tested and screened, and preferably obtained through a doctor so that the athletes would not suffer from side effects, and could be sure their bodies could handle the drugs, like with some medications. The limits of performance-enhancing, if I was to agree with letting athletes use them, would be only mildly performance-enhancing, similar to expensive equipment, or taking vitamins.

This video broke down what exactly happens to the body when athletes use performance-enhancing drugs. It used simple animation and descriptions to explain it, which helped me better understand the pros and cons. I still think they should not be allowed (even if the side effects discussed in the video were to be eliminated), as it just seems to almost defeat the purpose of professional athletics, as pretty much anyone would be able to become a professional athlete with the use of these performance-enhancing drugs.

I believe that July is responding to the way in which people criticize other people, especially young people, for their inability to connect face to face. This gives the users an easy way out (in some of these situations) while also allowing these meaningful exchanges to still occur. I also think that July is responding to the way that people now connect with strangers on social media, with this project being an extension of that.

While this seemed like a fun idea, I do not think I would send messages this way. I can appreciate the novelty of it, but would prefer to be the deliverer of the message. I think if it was a positive message, I would be willing to deliver it, but definitely not a breakup message like in the short film, as that would be uncomfortable and I would feel invasive.

I enjoyed reading other people’s stories about this, and found the ones that were more emotional to be endearing. I think that using it for things like supporting a long distance friend through her divorce is a good use of the app. Some stories though I was kind of disappointed in, as I expected them to be as dramatic as the short film, but only a few that I read were. I did, however, read a story of a proposal that was executed through the app, like in the short film.

While not exactly the same concept, this app made me think of the film Nerve. While not on the same scale, I think that using each app takes bravery and both comment on societal behaviors.

Texting Culture

Texting is certainly an extremely important form of communication in my life, though face to face communication will always be the best.

While I still call people, texting allows me to stay in contact with more people. For example, my best friend is going to school in LA, and texting allows us to let the other know we’re thinking about them, while our busy schedules and different time zones do not make calling easy. My boyfriend is going to school in New York, and the same concept applies, though he and I make time for calling a few times a week. Both of my grandmothers even text, with one preferring texting over calling. Texting is a means of staying in contact with my loved ones, even when we cannot speak on the phone.

Texting is also a means of communicating important information when I or whoever I am talking to cannot call or take calls. Recently, my mom and grandmother went through some major health issues (they are both good right now), and I told my boyfriend over text as soon as I knew because he was in class. Though I probably could have waited until he was available to speak with on the phone, it allowed us to discuss it much more quickly, and for him to comfort me in a difficult time. This was probably the most important news I have delivered by text.

There are many pros to texting, but definitely cons as well. One of the biggest issues with texting is that it can be difficult to discern tone and sarcasm, though the prevalence of emojis certainly helps. It can also hinder communication if texts are not sending, which can make you think the other person is ignoring you.

Infographic Ideas

Recently I was listening to a podcast that explained just how large the Palace of Versailles was so I was interested in finding a way to maybe compare it to the average house, or some other more modern structure. http://www.livescience.com/38903-palace-of-versailles-facts-history.html

I would also be interested in tracking adoptions or getting data from a local animal shelter and trying to find patterns in that. For example, people often say that black animals are less likely to get adopted, so I could try to compile statistics like that.

My last idea is to maybe- like the shoe example-look at the different or similar types of makeup my mom, sisters, and I own.

It represents the balance and struggle between contrasting personality traits.
