Presenting King Hubert, the saddest guy I've ever made~💖
I saw this c. 1616 wine cup that has a tiny engraving of 3 lions with sad old man faces wearing crowns. They bewitched me so thoroughly I had to make one I can hold in my hands
imo the key difference between wuxia and xianxia worldbuilding is that in wuxia stories it’s always possible under the rules of the world for characters to be arrested and put on trial by the government of imperial china, whereas i have yet to encounter a xianxia story where that’s even a thing that could happen. so when there’s chaos in the jianghu in a wuxia story, characters need to choose and fight to keep justice in their own hands, protecting not just the innocent from the violent but also protecting their community from a government that doesn’t have their best interests at heart; and when there’s chaos in the jianghu in a xianxia story, the characters need to reconcile themselves with the fact that no one is coming to save them, and the only justice they can get is just what they or anyone else can convince the people around them to believe
that is to say, wuxia settings make better metaphors for hong kong under colonial rule, while xianxia settings make better metaphors for post-1911 republican and communist china

"Honestly, these days I'm mostly an e-reader, and if I want a book I buy it. I only get nice hardcovers of books I really like. Plus, it seems like to find anything I'd have to dig and search, which I don't care enough to do anymore. I'm mostly going to this bookstore for the vibes. My budget is safe because I doubt I'll even buy anything." - me, full of hubris, about to enter John King Used & Rare Books
one of the first sections on the first floor is art and comics and i immediately realized my error
the gasp i let out when i spotted an Out Our Way collection was audible three stacks over and truly humbling. when i saw a rufus king pulp from 1930 i was so excited i started tearing up for real.
here is a map of the store btw
they offer it when you walk in so you can figure out where you are and one of the employees assured me that if i got lost i could just yell
I worked on the 4th floor of John King for almost two years and except for the low pay, constant dust and lack of heating and air conditioning it was an absolute dream job. Very few people ever made it up all four flights of stairs so I was alone in a giant room full of books and no expectations. I read the entire woman’s studies section during the winter of 2004.
Also, it’s true that finding lost patrons when they yell was a significant part of the job.
