“What is this? I am working hard!” He said indignantly. “Working hard on finishing all of these almonds I have.” Stuffing a handful in his mouth, Erik shrugged helplessly. “My ambitions are different from yours. I always finish the task at hand before moving onto the next,” he said. He cocked his head to the side. “You sure you don’t want an almond? I’ve got plenty.”
"I doubt that's gonna help you in the arena, but if your wish is to die then be my guest." She said, a cocky smile playing on her lips as she looked at him. "That doesn't sound very useful." Kallista rolled her eyes before letting out a sigh. "Fine, give me an almond." She finally agreed, not sure what was the big deal about the almonds, they didn't even taste that good.

“I use them a bit,” Skene said with a little shrug. “Lots of ‘em grow wild by the processing plants and stuff, and– um, I make medicine for my mum sometimes, when she isn’t feeling well. I can show you some stuff, if you want,” he offered nervously as they walked together to the smaller training station, which had many little pots with different herbs growing from it. “I don’t know how to use all of 'em, though.”
Kallista glanced at the boy, wondering why he wanted to teach her. "Why do you want to help me?" She asked, still looking at him as they walked. She had made deals with other tributes they will show her a skill in exchange for her to do the same, but for some reason he seemed selfless. "I mean, thanks. I can show you how to use knife if you want." She said, barely believing the words that came from her mouth.
“Hey, what we’re doing right now isn’t that much fun either.” He wanted to follow the steps of some of the other tributes, go directly towards the weapons and fighting - but he showing off what he could do (and couldn’t) so early wasn’t a good plan for Caspian. “We’re almost at the finish line, huh?”
"But at least it will be useful." She smirked at him. Playing with herbs was not interesting, she almost had to forced herself to learn. It was weird how now all she wanted was to practice with the knives, it felt she was almost eager to put her skills to test. "Yeah. In a blink of an eye we will be trying to kill each other. That should be fun." Not sure if she was being sarcastic or she actually meant it.
He narrowed his eyes at her, a grin on his face. “Are you really or are you just being modest? And I’ve been here mostly, I checked out the hammock station too but it was really boring so I left… Oops?” He would sleep on the floor if he had to; creating a hammock out of scratch was time consuming anyway unless you had a few years of experience making them.
She glanced at him as a crooked sly smile crept onto her face. "Guess you're gonna have to find out which one. What were you expecting from the hammock station? Just the name of it bores me." She didn't see the point of creating a hammock, it's not like she was going to get a lot of sleep in the arena and it was an unnecessary luxury.

“That’s– that must be nice?” Skene offered softly, sniffling a little bit and pushing open the glass door to the chamber, making his way back out onto the main training room floor.
“Anywhere but here,” he said softly, setting the scythe back onto the rack, trying to force his still-shaking fingers to stay still, which resulted, of course, in his hands going stiff and tight. He shoved his hands into his pockets, squeezing them into fists. “Medicinal herbs and stuff maybe?”
Kallista gave him a nod, not sure if nice would be the word she'd used to describe her District. "It's alright." She said with a slight shrug as she followed him to the main room.
It was obvious for her that he wanted to stay away from all the weapons, and at some point it was understandable. "Sure, I don't know much about herbs. We don't use them very often at Two." She said, a small smile tugged at the heavily lined corners of her mouth.
“Mhm, yeah, and they clearly put it here for a reason, right? Hopefully we get lucky and we practice a recipe we could use in the arena.” He said with a hint of sarcasm laced in his words. Only a hint. “Oh, yeah, are you any good?” He held off his questions about the knives station, but tried to subtly hint at it.
"I'm trying to do a cream for pain, I really hope it works." She said, not noticing the sarcasm in his voice and taking the statement very seriously. She really hoped the recipes were helpful. Kallista offered him a lopsided a smile as she thought about his question. "I'm not bad, not sure how good I am. What about you?"
“Daggers,” Silvia echoed, nodding her head. It wasn’t even worth it to pretend like she knew what it was aside from a vague picture in her mind, except for maybe what she once smuggled to one of the rebels in Eight. That was one of the most nervewracking trades of her life, but now that seemed like a cakewalk compared to what was inevitably the rest of her life. “What would you call what you were just doing?”
She couldn't even imagine what was life in other Districts, that's why seeing that someone didn't know how to use a weapon seemed so strange for her. At Two everyone knew at least how to use a knife, but it only made sense since they were in charge of weaponry. "Twirling the knife? It's not that hard, you just have to let it drop and the raise it again." She explained to the girl as she showed her the movement.
– “Does that bother you?” The girl’s defensive tone got on his nerves, somehow. Instead of lashing out, which Erik never really did anyway, he shrugged- then, enlightenment came upon his features. He gestured excitedly and dramatically with his hands. “Did it work? Didn’t quite think it’d be a good tactic for the games, but the current results show me that it is quite the excellent Spook Technique. Maybe it’ll keep me alive long enough for me to try it on everyone.” Erik smiled gently at the girl, but it was crooked and forced. There was an obvious challenge in his tone.
"Not at all. While your sitting there scaring people, I'm actually working hard. So, keep doing what you do." She shot him a cocky smile before her features became serious again. "I'll assure you that in the arena I'll be more alert, so I don't think it will work on me again. But if you think it's gonna keep you alive, do it." Kallista looked up at him, noticing the tone of his voice. The boy had scared her but at least now she knew she also had to protect herself from sneaky people.
Task 003 Chat 1
“Just act normally. That’s the best you can do.” He responded. “Well, I gotta go now. I’ll see you later and I’ll tell you what I’ve got with the guy from four, okay?”
Kallista looked at him, nodding her head. "Sounds good. I'll let you know if I find something else." She gave him a small smile before focusing her attention to her mix.
Ah, so Silvia’s suspicions were confirmed. “That’s awesome,” she said with a smile. Silvia paid close attention to how the knife felt in her hand, weighing it and even noting that there was a distinct balance– probably what made it sail so perfectly through the air. She remembered her father talking about knives over scissors once, and though cutting fabric wasn’t exactly the same as injuring someone, the memory stuck until she looked back at Kallista. “I’d like to figure it out myself, honestly. I’m not nearly as practiced as you are, but I think it’s probably my best bet, right? I mean, because I’m not even sure I can lift a sword, let alone swing it.”
The training center was not like she would have imagined, she thought it would be like the Peacekeepers training center but this one seemed to be more modern and all the weapons seemed to be new. Kallista looked back at the girl, sometimes she forgot that some of the tributes never had touched a sword or a knife, at least not with fighting purposes. "You should start training, it's not easy to learn. If the swords are not for you, you can try daggers or something lighter."
He smirked, “Ah, now there it is.” Now looking at clearer instructions, Caspian’s time at the medicine station might not be so disastrous after all. Meeting her gaze, he shook his head, “Nope, not just yet. Starting out small for the first day, I guess. I’ve been itching to go to one of the stations though.” He was still debating whether or not to show what he was truly good at; knives or anything small and pointy he could get his hands on. It was his specialty, his mother’s gift to him. “What about you?”
She smiled and gave an understanding nod. "This is a good station to start, I've never seen some of this herbs." Kallista had been waiting for the training center, she wanted to analyze the other tributes and also learn new things. If it wasn't for the games, she would say she was excited and happy to be here. "I tried the obstacle course, and I went to the knives station."
“You are,” she agreed easily, not at all offended or phased by the girl’s tone. Confidence was acceptable when you have the skill, and Silvia would never tear someone down for that– not to their face, at least. “Have you practiced here a lot? Or is this prior knowledge?” Silvia asked, picking up a small knife from the table and instantly liking the rush.
Kallista furrowed at her question, there was no way she could be this good without prior knowledge. She thought for a second what to tell the girl, the truth or a lie. She didn't want to reveal all her skills. "I've been practicing all day and it's not the first time I grabbed a knife." She said, looking at her as she ran her finger down the knife blade again, testing its sharpness.
“How do you know?” He asked. Many of the tributes had told him the same Kallista had, so he wanted to know what recipe they were reading. “Just askin’.” He said quietly. If he remembered correctly, her name was Kallista, from Two. So, far, she was the only of the inner District tribute that he liked. Her and Lysander, both people he barely talked to.
"Common sense," she said, "and it's in this paper." Kallista bit her lip, trying to prevent a smile as she handed him the recipe. She remembered him from the train, he had been one of the few people that had not annoyed her. "Have you tried other stations?" She asked, glancing at him.

He nodded quietly as the other asked his district. “I don’t know– where are you from?” Skene asked curiously, sniffling a little bit still and rubbing at his eyes to rid himself of the remaining tear streaks on his face. “Sorry–” he added quickly, biting down on his bottom lip. “I don’t think I met you on the train or at the party or anything.”
He heard an impatient throat clear from outside the chamber, and stumbled automatically towards the door, looking over at her with an apologetic smile. “Maybe we can go to other stations together, then?”
"Two." She responded, her gaze fixed on the boy as rubbed his eyes. Since the reaping when her father visited her in the room, she had been wondering how much time would it take her to cry again, it almost felt like a ticking bomb. "I've seen you but we haven't talked until now." She explained with slight shrug.
Kallista raised an eyebrow to her question before nodding her head. "Hmm... sure," she paused, "Where do you want to go? We can try something that don't require weapons if you want."
Task 003 Chat 1
“I get it.” He said casually. He knew Kal was right. “I may not be an erudite but I have enough common sense.” He responded. “I can work the boy from four. You chose another one and we’ll see how things develop.” He commented.
"It was just a reminder. Sometimes I have to remind myself that." She said with a lopsided smile. "Sounds good, but first I need to work on my fake smile because it's not very good."
Task 003 Chat 1
“The guy from four seems smart, but he may pissed some people if he keeps that attitude.” He made a pause. “I haven’t had the chance to talk to so many people because most of them are in groups. I’m waiting for the chance they are all by themselves.”
"He has been nice to me, but then again I shouldn't trust anyone." She said as she grabbed a few leaves. "That's why we need to smile, even if we don't like it. Especially with the tributes from the lower Districts. We can't be antisocial or have an attitude with them, enemies are not good no matter how good we are."
