Page 41, Thomas seing Newt for the first time: "Another boy lay there, blond hair cropped short, eyes closed, covers pulled up to his chin. (...) He saw the name on the monitors. Newt. Three now. He knew three names."

Page 74, their first interaction: " 'Hey I'm Newt', the boy whispered. 'And I know bloody well who you are.' "

Page 82, Newt and Sonya make Thomas realize that WICKED isn't how he thought it was: "For the first time since the man named Randall had hurt him, he felt a sudden and shocking anger toward the people behind it all. Toward WICKED."

Page 83, Newt calling Thomas 'Tommy' for the first time: " 'That's the way of things, Tommy' "

Page 83, Thomas dreaming of Newt: "Throughout his shortened night, he dreamed of Newt and Sonya. Of Newt and Lizzy."

Page 89, Newt making Thomas laugh: "A laugh exploded out of Thomas's mouth that send spray everywhere"

Page 127, them meeting again after being seperated for two years: " 'What's up Tommy?' Newt exclaimed, his face filled with genuine happiness at the pleasant surprise that'd been sprung on him."

Page 127, Newt complimenting Thomas: " 'You look bloody fantastic for three in the morning' "

Page 167, they meet again three years later: " 'Well, look who the bloody copper dragged in', Newt said, pulling Thomas into a big hug. He pounded his back a few times before letting go."

Page 172, them being goofy: "Newt tripped over him, and then they were both laughing, legs and arms tangled in a pile on the ground."

Page 172, Newt teasing Thomas: " 'Are you sure WICKED knows what they're doing with you? (...) You seem a little more clown than elite' "

Page 326, Thomas thinking of Newt before entering the Glade: " 'I'm coming for you, Newt' Thomas whispered, so softly that no one could possibly hear him."

I get so emotional about Newt saying “and I remember you” in his letter because he didn’t always get to remember. His memories were stolen before he woke up in the Box and imo it’s one of the greatest tragedies in the series. Thirteen years of experiences, grief, and friendships that were lost to time,,,, he had a little sister, and no one will ever know because that knowledge was taken from both of them.

But he remembered Thomas.

The importance of memory and its intrinsic connection to identity was stated in the letter (I want you to know that I'm not afraid. Well, not of dying, anyway, it’s more forgetting. It's losing myself to this virus, that's what scares me). Forgetting was conflated with losing his sense of self, both of which he considered a fate worse than death. I feel like the Gladers almost saw memory and identity as privileges. They weren’t guarantees, since they’d all forgotten everything and the threat of losing themselves was very present in their lives, both through the Changing and later with the Flare. The memories Newt made during and after the Maze were memories he fought for, as was the person he became. As he wrote the letter, he could feel the latter slipping. In the end, the memories would go too.

But. But. He held onto those memories until he was literally collapsed on the ground and half out of his mind. He remembered Thomas. And he knew he would follow him anywhere. And if he could do it all over again, he would, and he wouldn’t change a thing. He would go through everything - forgetting, building himself back up from the ground, losing that self to the virus.

And I just. I just think that I remember you is such a profound admission of love from someone who has fought and is still actively fighting to do that. I may be losing myself, but I remember you. I may have lost almost everything else, but I remember you. Getting to here, where I am remembering you, has taken a world of things from me, has taken my past and my identity and nearly everyone I’ve ever loved, but I would follow you into that mess all over again, because it brought me to you, and it brought me to my family, and it brought me back to myself, and at the end of the day those things are all the same. I am dying, and I remember you.

Every now and then I remember that they turned the maze runner movies into just another set of zombie films and I'm newly annoyed.

Like don't get me wrong the movies themselves are pretty damn good for films that diverged so thoroughly from the source material, and obviously the actors and characters are fantastic.

But the Flare in the books is so much worse than the Flare in the movies, and they really majorly lost out when they decided to just turn it into a zombie virus.

Because zombies, sure, ok, they're scary. But they're not the same kind of creeping dread that the book-Flare victims are. The book-Flare people are sooooo hair raising, in my opinion. The way that the disease starts with just decreased impulse control, resulting in people who are a little more reckless and a little more prone to pursuing their desires with little regard for consequences. and then how slowly that gets worse, and eventually things like kindness and compassion are leeched, bit by bit, away from victims of the Flare, leaving an intelligent human who has no empathy or morals -- and then how they become even more unhinged; the way they slowly stop feeling pain; the way they are still full functional except for the fact that theyre absolutely not.

And the fact that it happens over years. The fact that so many of the scientists who were putting these kids through these awful experiments were themselves infected, and thats why their ethics had slid so much and they were so willing to subject children to the horrors they did.

The fact that Newt wasn't past the Gone yet, but that he was still with it enough to know that he was slipping, to know that he was getting worse, to know that his moments of clarity were growing fewer and soon would stop altogether, to know that his moments of being him were running out, to know that there was only one way to stop himself from turning into one of those barely human monstrosities.

Yeah, idk. I just think that the Flare in the books was so much more horrifying. There's something so chilling about a person's intelligence remaining whilst their humanity is slowly stripped away from them. I'll never understand why the movies chose to become Just Another Zombie Movie when they had something so much more original and so much more alarming Right There.
