Human Trafficking. Those two words are an indelible line scored between a billion dollar business and a myriad of causes. Lust collides with righteous rage. Hope is the first word in a thousand punchlines for the well intended and the most elusive dream of a million and a million more. I have often looked into the eyes of a girl or boy too young to have lost their sacred innocents and felt such a rage rise up in me. So often in seeking justice we crave a swift and righteous strike. Many times I have put on a mask of complicity and faced a man or women and known their sins and in that moment lusted for immediate and final justice. The truth is that we are not vigilantes. The monumental task of bringing long lasting change; of turning the tide against a global culture of human exploitation is an arduous and layered chore that is not served by a swift and vengeful justice. Progress is stumbling and often more like falling. Most often it feels like we are standing at the end of a hopeless endeavor and then a bright moment of triumph; a rescue. A lawful arrest at the end of a carful case. And then we remember that it is just the beginning and hope has not alluded us.
