“Can we just skip the small talk? Every person I’ve met in this town I’ve had sit through an hour of meaningless bullshit small talk. Let’s talk about something interesting, like….where’s the craziest place you’ve had sex? See, now that’s interesting.” He smirked.

A slamming lurch was felt in Michael’s stomach at the man’s words, and he wet his lips, keeping his eyes very determinedly on the ground. He had yet to have his first kiss, let alone.... that. It didn’t make him feel strange until he was put on the spot like this. “Sorry, are you talking to me?” He gnawed at his lower lip, glancing behind him just in case.

He couldn’t agree more with the other, the place was beautiful, and he loved how it was, one of the reasons why he fell in love with the place, and decided to move there when he made the decision to move away from Wales. Most people were pretty nice too, so that helped, but there were the exceptions, unfortunately. “Nah, I ‘m from Wales, but I have been livin’ ‘ere for five years, so it’s been quite sometime” he smiled at him “Where did you live before comin’ ‘ere?”

“Wales,” he repeated, trying to conjure up a world map in his mind. It didn’t work; he just knew it had to be somewhere in Europe. “That’s very far... is your family in the military? Why did they move?” He was a little puzzled as to how someone from Wales ended up here. Then again, Michael’s circumstances were pretty non-conventional as well; the death of his grandfather had been a huge turning point in how his future was looking these days. “I’m from Seoul, in Korea. It’s only been a few weeks here in America,” he said a little sheepishly. “But I’m due to start university here soon, so I’ll know more things. I’ll know not to get lost -- I won’t be a bother anymore.”

“It is if you lose,“ Rocco chuckled, “Which I barely do. Undefeated for over a year, actually.“ He smiled, “I wanted to become a professional kickboxer when I was about 9. When I was 18 that shifted towards MMA. I’m now 21 I have my first MMA match in a month.“

“That’s amazing,” he marveled, and he meant it. To live life with purpose was something Michael had yet to achieve. Sure he had his passions but they weren’t realistic. “Congratulations on your first match! Will it be on television?” The dialogue on most shows moved faster than Michael was comfortable with, but sports could be broadcasted in any language and still be understood.

“Intermediate? Hm, then I’m sure it’ll be fine,” Beckett replied with a small smile. He hadn’t really done much hiking, but he did just enjoy the nice weather. He raised an eyebrow at the name Mr. Fitz, and immediately made the deduction that that was Austin. Of course it wasn’t any of his business, but it was interesting to know. “Oh nice! Austin, I think that’s who you’re talking about, is a great dude.” He smiled knowingly. “Where are you originally from?”

If he was surprised that this man happened to know his host, Michael didn’t show it. This town seemed to be a strange blend of being small enough that people just knew each other and big enough that he’d found himself lost once or twice. “He’s very nice,” Michael agreed. “And very smart. I know it has to be difficult to become a professor. Ah, I’m from South Korea -- I’m here studying for a semester at the university.” The circumstances of his arrival were a little bittersweet, but he was excited to be in the States nonetheless. “Have you ever been?”

“Sure, I don’t see why not” he smiled at the other, he usually ran in close by there, and then came back again to the town, and to his apartment, he was still a human though, so he usually rested when he got to the park, before he jogged to his apartment. He didn’t get tired easily, but anyone would need some rest after jogging that much “I don’t run that fast anyway, so it isn’t that hard ta keep up, anyone probably would be able ta”

Michael brightened, picking up the pace of his walk a little until he broke into a jog beside him. It came easily to him, and as (surprisingly) friendly the stranger was it was nice to have somewhere else to look because hell, eye contact was hard for him sometimes. “My book always said it was beautiful here... I think the photos didn’t do it justice,” he marveled. “Are you from around here, North Carolina?” Probably a stupid question given his accent, his inner monologue chastised, but he could never be sure.

“You’re welcome. And I’m Rocco,“ he said. “Yeah, it’s good training. I don’t. I’m a bouncer in town. And a profession fighter. So I come here a lot to work out.“

His eyes widened a little and he couldn’t help his lingering stare. "Is that dangerous?” He’d only ever seen professional fighters on television; Michael had always considered them as a type of celebrity. “Did you always want to do that?”

“Looks are deceiving to be honest. Just because my outside appearance looks as such – doesn’t mean that the inside of me is that great.” Though with the way he played musical instruments, that required a lot of air, his insides weren’t that bad honestly. Wyatt nodded, “Born and raised. So no I don’t get lost.” 

"So your outside isn’t real? Like... plastic surgery?” Michael asked. He wondered if that was overly personal or rude to ask a stranger but he was puzzled as to what he meant. Perhaps something had gotten lost in translation. “That’s good! I would still get lost in my hometown sometimes, but it’s much bigger than here.”

“It’s old enough for me.” She answered somewhat dourly, staring hard at the other. “And not all of us follow what mommy and daddy tell us to do all the time. Some of us have thoughts of our own.” Okay, it wasn’t his fault he’d struck a sore spot. God only knew where she’d be if she was still doing what her father wanted. At school, or married and nothing but a little trinket on a man’s arm. She would have no say in her life, that was for certain. “I don’t need you buy me shit. I have money.”

“I...” She was smaller than him, that Michael could tell, but she could probably snap him in half regardless with the look she was giving. He was sure he didn’t warrant the sharp tone but he didn’t have it in him to argue or say much in fear of making it worse, and just nodded. “Okay. I will just... just in case you change your mind.” As a last impulse decision he pulled out a five dollar bill and gingerly edged it under one of her drier papers before backing away, head ducked in one last silent apology.

Theo liked going for runs more than anything but he switched it up this time. He took a walk instead. Just to change up his routine of being active more than anything. Honestly he didn’t think he could run today even if he wanted to; his back was tense and the impact on the pavement wouldn’t help him to say the least. Luckily he found trails to hike on. He chuckled, “Oddly enough I do. It takes about two hours depending on how fast you’re walking.” 

He smiled gratefully at the guy who answered him; Wilmington was in no shortage of kind strangers, it seemed. “I have average pace, I think,” he said, not wanting to overestimate in front of someone who looked pretty athletic himself. “Sometimes I stop to take pictures when the view is nice. It usually is beautiful. I have been told to check out the boardwalk here too but... it looks very busy. I think I would get in the way.” He’d loved swimming back home but it was certainly intimidating being in the heart of the town. He was working on that.

When Imogen had heard from her dad that Michael was moving to the US, she couldn’t have been more ecstatic. They had been close as kids, before the brunette had relocated to the US to be closer to her father’s side of the family. Admittedly, their one unshakable bond had weakened over the years, especially as the summer months grew shorter for Imogen when medical school hit. She wasn’t able to join her dad in their almost annual trip to Seoul. Turning to her cousin at her side, Imogen shook her head. “Well, if you’re thinking about going for a stroll it should take two hours tops. Or if you Sonic-run up there I’d say 10 minutes,” She said, a giggle passing her lips. It stopped abruptly at the next statement. “Michael! If you get stranded, call me and I can pick you up. The buses here are a bit confusing - they’re either early or late, there is no in between. Weirdness.”

Michael rubbed at his chin in mock thought. “Sonic run.... maybe if I Naruto run I can make it up even faster,” he joked, an easy grin spreading across his face. He was always controlled to the point of being stiff around strangers, but with her he was a little more of his cheeky dorky self. Despite going through their teenage years without each other he still felt that bond with her. Imogen was a familiar and safe person in a town he felt very much like a tourist in. He would forever admire his cousin. “Ah, no, I can’t. I know you’re busy with work. I can take care of myself -- please don’t worry. It’s not Seoul. Much less cold and the people I’ve met have always been very kind.”

Beckett was starting to get to learn Wilmington. The ins and outs of the place; the little streets that lead to no where; the places that could be considered good; but yet he had not done much walking around in nature. It was strange because in Central Park, he did a lot of exploring while here he felt like he didn’t have time. He was extremely caught up with the firm and getting it off its feet. He decided then to go on a quick walk to the park. He furrowed his eyebrow in confusion as he looked at the map. “Your guess is as good as mine. I haven’t been up here yet. What’s the bus for?”

“My guide book said it was a good trail, intermediate...” He fell quiet for a moment in thought. Said book probably should have mentioned that some trails took so long to complete that you were stumbling through the dark by the end. But he was determined not to make that mistake again. "The bus? Oh, it’s how I get back to my host family’s home. I’m staying with a professor. But he told me not to address him that way, so I’m reminding myself he is just ‘Mr. Fitz’,” he corrected himself with a nod and sheepish smile.

Arthur was jogging, he did so in the park sometimes, and others in the woods, he liked to do it in the woods, because there he didn’t have the risk to end up being run over, he tended to get lost in the music when he was listening to it, and not paying attention to the outside world. Which was why he wasn’t listening to music now that he was jogging in the park, he went there jogging already, doing so while listening to music was dangerous, because he was in the streets, not in the woods. Once he stopped a little to rest, before he continued to jog, someone talked to him “Hm… Let me see if I remember… It would take a half hour or forty minutes ta get there if I ‘m not wron’ “

The man was handsome, almost ridiculously so, Michael quietly noted to himself. If it were possible he would be content to just watch the people in Wilmington go about their daily lives; they all held their own brand of fascination to him. He shoved his hands into his jacket pockets, furrowing his brow a little as he listened. The man’s accent was strong and it made Michael slow to understand what he was saying. “Oh, are you going in that direction?” A beat. “May I join you? If that’s alright. I can keep up.”

Most didn’t recommend walking and working on your phone, but Lioba generally managed it without too much trouble. Granted, she’d had her share of embarrassing accidents, and had only narrowly avoided one when someone started speaking to her. She gave him a blank look at first, then glanced down at the map. “I don’t know, maybe a few hours? I’m not much of a hiker.” It had never appealed much to her, walking around in the middle of nowhere, although she did like the outdoors. Just not for an extended period of time.

He was a little puzzled as to why she would be outside if not to enjoy it, but he wasn’t about to ask and generate conflict. This time of year back home always meant staying inside to avoid freezing his fingers off, save for trips to unload shipment trucks for his parents. “Ah, I see,” he nodded a little. “You could start, if you wanted to. It smells like rain in the woods, and it’s always nice and quiet. I saw a grey fox last time I was here!”

“To walk? I’m not sure. I’ve jogged it a few times and that took me about 75 minutes. I’d say it’s like… 2 and a half times that if you walk? Maybe 3 times? So, say, 3 and a half hours?“ Rocco said, doing some math in his head.

“Three and a half hours. Thank you,” Michael repeated with a grateful nod. With several hours until sundown he was sure he could make or beat that time easily. “I’m Michael, by the way. And you’re fast,” he noted, not missing the stranger’s comment that he’d jogged the trail. “Do you work here, in the park?”

Wyatt didn’t get outside too much as he was always working. Somehow walking along trails seemed like a good idea though. Getting out in the fresh and hopefully not think about anything for awhile. Which, for Wyatt, wasn’t always easy to do – his mind constantly swirled with thoughts. He shook his head at the other’s question saying, “Sorry I don’t. I’m just here to enjoy the weather and not kill myself on an eight mile walk.” He chuckled.

He licked his lips nervously when the man responded -- he really needed to get used to this whole idea of small talk. When did it stop feeling so awkward? "That’s okay. But you wouldn’t kill yourself doing this, even if it were eighty miles. You seem healthy and strong enough,” Michael assured the man. “Are you local to here? I bet you don’t get lost,” he added, shy smile creeping in at his words.
