Mages are incredibly complex players, suffering from their aspect as much as they understand it totally. Void’s focus on nothingness, secrecy, and misdirection clearly gives room for a tremendous amount of silent suffering - and yet also for an incredible, and almost scary, depth of understanding to the secrets of the world.
True Mages of Void understand completely the feelings of nothingness, isolation, insignificance and irrelevance, and as a result suffer from it to an extreme.
They are people with low self esteem, low self image issues; people who hide themselves away in the shadows with no desire to come out, because they feel as if they simply mean nothing to the world. They are likely to be overlooked, ignored, utterly unable to attract attention from anyone or anything; in a classroom they are always the one put at the back, and in group activities they are always the one who sits there, silently, and waits for the activity to end.
They understand that their life, and the lives of others, are worthless. They know that there is a grand scheme in the world, and they understand, impossibly, that they have no potential to even reach for it; they perfectly understand that no matter how hard they try, they will ultimately amount to nothing. They understand the feeling of non-importance and reject the concept of any one thing having value over another, unless in relation to the greater scheme - for instance, they are less likely to care about race and religion and the colour of someone’s skin, not because they truly think those things are important to understand and to recognise as something that doesn’t make us different as human beings, but because they are aware that at the end of the day everyone will die forgotten, regardless of who they are in life.
Secrets mean nothing to the True Mage of Void; wherever secrets are hidden, they will be found, no matter how hard one tries to conceal them. If you try to deceive a True Mage of Void, they will be able to see through you almost immediately, and expose your lies. It is simply impossible to hide anything from a True Mage of Void, in a way that even other Void players may struggle with; whereas they may stumble upon secrets and deceit, the True Mage of Void will always know the secrets were there.
Worse, perhaps, they can see through the lies, secrets and hidden nature of other Void players, regardless of how strong and well adapted to their classpect those players may be. If you need to hide something, if it is vital to your life, your purpose, your success - never go near a True Mage of Void. They will understand and find it immediately, and with their futile outlook on life, they will see no importance on the secret at all. Secrets do not matter because life, overall, is futile, holds no importance; a secret is insignificant when you and those involved are dead, so why try to hide them? It is a dangerous mindset the True Mage of Void holds.
In the sense of powers, True Mages of Void are rather incredible. With the ability to hide themselves almost completely, they can also hide just about anything else - without the potential for it to ever be found, unless by, perhaps, another Mage of Void or Light. They can make anything seem futile, insignificant, or unimportant - and actually make that thing become so without even trying. That world-ending machine that was going to ruin everything? Well, now it does nothing, means nothing, was never meant to be anything to begin with.
Unfortunately, they do not choose that which they make meaningless; while it could be the world-ending machine, it could also be the world-saving machine you’d been so desperately working on and had finally completed. In a more SBURB context, horrorterrors are something that a True Mage of Void has no reason to fear. Understanding futility completely, they either hand themselves over willingly, or are utterly untouchable by the horrorterrors. They can, in fact, hide themselves from the void itself. This does not come without its own drawbacks, however; True Mages of Void are more likely to suffer from mental illness - particularly depression - and to find some way of coping - likely more towards alcohol or drugs.
True Mages of Void are lonely people. They are quiet, withdrawn, unassuming; you’d walk past them without even knowing they were there. They do not stand out from the crowd, and instead blend in so perfectly you would never even assume they were in the crowd to begin with. They suffer through life silently and alone, accepting of their fate and, ultimately, waiting for it to end.
They are people who have suffered their whole lives, and perhaps seen things nobody else should have seen. From a young age, tragedy will have followed them, until they reach a point where nothing holds meaning, and all is futile in the end. It might simply be that they have struggled with mental illness for a very long time, untreated and alone, or have had their achievements ignored by people who expect more. All of their attempts at life have fallen short, and any moments for them to stand out have crumbled before hey could shine. A True Mage of Void learns young that there is no meaning to life, to the things that they do, to the dreams that they held - because nobody has ever shown them otherwise that there is meaning to life.
A Realised Mage of Void suffers from their knowledge of non-importance, secrecy, and irrelevance, but has come to understand that some things are less irrelevant to others, and thus worth fighting for.
Though they may suffer with the knowledge that they are, ultimately, unimportant people in the world, Realised Mages of Void seek out the things that are more important than others, things that hold a little bit more meaning than the things that are truly meaningless. While they know that, in the end, people will die and relationships will mean nothing, they thrive on the knowledge that, until then, those things will help make a life worth enjoying.
They help themselves and others understand the things in existence that just aren’t worth focusing on - the petty arguments, the societal pressures, the strife that exists between people for no other reason than to have strife - and in turn are able to help them focus on the things that are important. They are quick to give up on things that they know hold no meaning, and hide those things as much as they possibly can.
Though they do not actively try to give things meaning, they tend to show people, by accident, the meaningful things in life by directing attention away from the things they hide, the things they know are unimportant. For instance, in an election, they may hide information on all those silly parties that people vote for just for fun, because they know there’s no way for them to win - and in turn, people focus more on the actual parties that have a chance of gaining power.
They are incredibly proficient, just as True Mages of Void are, at finding secrets and deception, no matter how hard someone may try to hide; however, they are more adept at knowing what needs to be hidden and what doesn’t, what is meaningless and what isn’t, and are less likely to conceal things that should be brought to light.
They are more than capable at hiding themselves and others, and though they may slip into shadows, hide in the crowds, and overall try not to stand out, they do not suffer from it in the all-encompassing way the True Mages of Void do; yes, they may have to suffer loneliness and isolation, but they become much better at listening, at piecing together information, at finding secrets and putting them to use. For instance, rather than wallow in the emotion of being meaningless, a Realised Mage of Void uses this ability to go under the radar, right under people’s noses.
In the sense of powers, they are able to achieve everything a True Mage of Void can; hiding things completely, finding the secrets even other Void players don’t want revealed, creating Void and hiding from the Void itself all in the same breath - yet, a Realised Mage of Void has the unique ability to bargain with, and potentially control, the horrorterrors. Understanding the Void, they best understand how to appease a horrorterror or find the loopholes in their statements, turning anything they try to do into something that benefits the session as a whole. In a more realistic sense, simply replace this with any authority figure trying to keep a secret; they’re basically incredibly proficient blackmailers.
Though they suffer from isolation, and meaninglessness, and are still more than aware that their position in life holds no purpose in the grand scheme of things, a Realised Mage of Void is significantly happier with who they are. While loneliness and the feeling of being overlooked persists, they are better at understanding that those feelings are, themselves, meaningless; yes, finding out that your work was not as good as someone else’s sucks, but if it holds no merit towards your grades in school or your wages in work, then does it matter? Of course not. This is how the Realised Mage of Void comes to terms with what is and isn’t important, and how they relieve themselves of the pressures of society in a way that benefits them emotionally. Furthermore, knowing that life is futile, surely that means you can just have more fun? Realised Mages of Void are freer people overall. Though they may still suffer from things like depression, and attempt to counteract these feelings with addictions, they have positive days that True Mages of Void simply do not - days that reassure them that even if life is meaningless, some things in it are worth living for.
Realised Mages of Void are people who had access to help and other people. They are people who realised, early on, that some successes are just fake; that in childhood, being told your work is better than another child’s doesn’t actually gain you anything other than a pleasant emotion at the time. Their eyes become opened to that which society tries to keep secret; that some of its most important assets are some of the most worthless, and that in truth, there’s a lot of pressure put on you that simply doesn’t need to exist. They likely managed to have a few friends - maybe one or two silent people, just like them, people who believed themselves to be meaningless and unimportant - and were able to find importance through these people. Though their upbringing was still lonely, and they have realised early on that life overall is meaningless, someone in their life has taught them that even that knowledge is meaningless; that life is only as useless as you make it, that things are only as unimportant as you make them, and that sometimes the most important things are the things that you should focus on least of all.
A Failed Mage of Void is one who refuses to acknowledge the knowledge they have, inherently, on secrets, hidden things, and irrelevance, instead thrusting themselves as much as they can into the throng of things - and suffering significantly more instead.
They try too hard to pretend that there is significance in things that are insignificant, looking too deeply into the irrelevant and the small in order to escape the large-scale futility. They refuse to believe that anything is unimportant, that there is anything in life which can’t be seen as holding meaning, and are desperate to assume that they, themself, hold some sort of purpose in life.
In their desperation, they avoid the secrets that their aspect is known for; to them, they are unimportant, things that are hidden for a reason, and something not worth knowing, regardless of how easily they can find them. Instead, they try to find the truth, without actually knowing what the truth is - and in turn only find lies that they believe are true. This makes them exceptionally easy to deceive, as though they may know they are being lied to, they will desperately assume that the lie holds more meaning than the truth.
They deeply dislike the idea of being left out, left alone, left in last place, so attempt wherever possible to step into the limelight - taking part in group activities, trying to do better than anyone at what they’re told to do, doing their best to contribute to conversations in order to get closer to people. However, these things will always backfire: the group will forget to do their part of the task, and they will ultimately come in last place; the day that they do better than anyone else, the teacher will have forgotten that they’d even given out work, and will forget to mark it or forget to take it in; by the time they attempt to contribute to a conversation, it will be well over and done with, and nobody will be interested in what they have to say.
Their attempts will amount to nothing, but they will never see the irrelevance of what they’re doing - or if they do, they utterly ignore it and keep trying anyway. In this sense, they are almost desperate to pretend that they are Light players, regardless of how often knowledge and information may avoid them.
In the sense of powers, they are incredibly lacking. They are constantly hidden, though attempt to ignore this fact, doing everything in their power to escape the Void and dash into the Light, though never truly succeeding. They are weak to lies and secrets will remain hidden, even to them, who see them as insignificant; as a result, they are quick to succumb to manipulation. The horrorterrors are their true foe; terrified of the gods who dwell in the Void, the Failed Mage of Void is more likely than any other Void player to fall into their tendrils and perhaps even to become Grimdark, a fate which they should, automatically, be safe from. They will never be able to barter with the horrorterrors in the way a True or Realised Mage of Void should, and will instead be used as a pawn, perhaps one who does not even realise they are being used - promised information they will never receive.
They are desperate people. Attempting to present themselves as fun and bubbly, they suffer from the same isolation and depression as the True Mage of Void does - though they repeatedly ignore their feelings in an attempt to achieve the feeling or relevance they desire. The constant rejection causes them to grow progressively worse, to become more desperate for things they will never receive, and in turn to push away those they are trying to draw closer to; they are, essentially, doomed to stay in the shadows, surrounded by secrets they will never take notice of, pouring over irrelevant things in the hope they hold some relevance within, and to suffer all-encompassing isolation as a result.
Failed Mages of Void are people who have been raised comparing themselves to others, and comparing short emotions to wider-scale events. They are the people who see a child become happy at a small success that holds no baring on their future, and focus intently on feeling that same happiness, regardless of how insignificant it is. Events that most would forget as they grow older and make more significant achievements are things the Failed Mage of Void never forgets. They connect success to praise, to being seen, to being popular, and dive into their attempts to achieving all of it without considering exactly how important those things are in the grand scheme of the world. They likely grew up with siblings, or friends, whom their parents took notice of more, or surrounded by people who were only impressed by success, and only gave attention to those who were successful - people who wouldn’t care that their child had done something spectacular unless they received an award for it, no matter how useless the award was.
