#Mon-El caressing Kara’s face before their kiss
the forehead touch™
Was it rude? Sure. Was it offensive to lgbt+ fans? Yes.
Was it homophobic?
No.
It may have hurt you, as a wlw, to see them so casually disregard something you are so attached to. To see them so casually disregard something you’re so attached to because you are a woman who loves women.
But the truth of the matter is, they just saw it as a ship that isn’t going to be canon, but that everyone has gone crazy for.
This happened, not because they are homophobic, but because they don’t realize the impact even non-canon wlw ships have on wlw.
They likely thought of it the way they think of other ships. Like typical ship wars, except there’s no reason for it because it’s not a part of the show they’re making.
Let’s break it down:
“They’re only friends. They’re not gonna get together, they’re only friends.”
This statement in and of itself was not homophobic. The shouting was cringy, but It could be said about any gender combo of a ship that isn’t going to happen, and there’s nothing inherent in it’s use that implies there is homophobia underlying it.
Heteronormativity, I suppose, in them assuming that Kara and Lena could never get together. (But it’s also true? They know that they’re not going to get together? They were never going to get together, and we all knew this.)
People are inserting a “we don’t like this ship because it’s gay” into the “they’re only friends!” that doesn’t exist at all.
If an actor said this about a straight, non-canon ship, even in the shout-y way they did it, it wouldn’t be a big deal. It’d suck for the people who shipped it, but it wouldn’t be a mark against their character, really.
Take for instance, The 100’s Eliza Taylor’s pretty obvious annoyance at Bellarke. A lot of people ship this non-canon ship, are super invested in it, and she’s pretty apparent about her dislike of it.
But because it’s not a gay ship, it’s not a big deal.
Their misstep was in not realizing that this isn’t a straight ship, and that it has a deeper meaning to people. It’s something that Jeremy is finding out-
Uninformed, not homophobic. It’s like someone calling someone something that they didn’t know was a slur. You aren’t aware of the impact the words can have, and you don’t mean it in the way that would hurt them.
Side note: it’s easy to say “then they should just apologize and not make excuses.” But when the alternative to me explaining myself is the other person thinking I actually feel a certain way, a way that would hurt them and lessen my own character exponentially, I’d probably do the same thing. Defend myself, whilst recognizing that I hurt the other person and apologizing for that. I wouldn’t apologize for being homophobic if I wasn’t homophobic.
In my drafts, I have a response to someone asking if Kara and Lena could ever get together a few weeks ago, and it was a strong “No, do not put your hope in this possibility”.
It’s sucks that we can’t have two main wlw relationships on a mainstream show at this stage, but that’s the way the reality of the world is, especially coming from straight writers who want to write stories about themselves. Realistically, we need to look toward wlw writers for that kind of representation.
But if your anger is about the fact that they won’t get together even though they have chemistry, that we don’t have the option that heterosexual ships have of something developing because of chemistry, then I think your anger is misdirected at these cast members, who are simply aware of this fact and did not make it so.
Should you be angry at the writers? Maybe. I think it’s the industry, more than any individual creative team (producers are more accountable because they are the gatekeepers), at this point. Writers like to write things they relate to, so we need to get people in who are lgbt+ to handle these stories if we want more than one or two lgbt+ characters.
What you should be angry at is that it looks like Ali Adler, a lesbian writer, was pushed out of the show.
Melissa’s comments, specifically:
Because this is a Kara/Melissa heavy blog.
“We’re only friends.”
Melissa was singing “a girlfriend” about Lena up until Jeremy shouted “They’re only friends!”
Then she laughed at Jeremy’s comment, mimicked his shouting, and said “We’re only friends!”
Like .2 seconds ago, she was into it.
Her stance didn’t shift from accepting to rejecting, she just joined in on a joke about how everyone loves these two characters together but they’ve been playing them as just friends.
(To me, this read like fake exasperation, playing that someone is repeatedly asking you if you’re into someone, but you’re not. I won’t argue that this is true, because we really can’t be sure, but that’s what my people-reading instincts are telling me about the situation?)
But as it stands, I don’t sense any hostility toward the concept of supercorp at all.
“That was brave.”
Melissa said this, not as “You’re so brave for standing up and going against the gays. It’s what we’re all thinking.”
She said it as, “You’re brave for saying that a ship that people are so so into is definitely not gonna happen when we’re expected to tiptoe around that fact as much as we can, to keep them watching. And for saying something against a group that has a really impactful presence online and who’s fans been known to harass people who are a threat to the ship (Rahul Kohli, anyone?).”
And Katie, a few minutes later, said that she and Melissa talked about how it was great that people could look at what they do and see something totally different from what they saw. And Melissa has enthusiastically agreed with the positive things that Katie has been saying on the matter.
She hasn’t said much herself, beyond that it’s cool that people can take away from it what they like and that she’s cool with it (plus when asked why people like supercorp so much, she said “A Luthor and a Super” which made me happy because it’s like an Iconic™ line from the show and a big way that I conceptualize them) but she’s a wallflower type and more comfortable directing people to others’ articulation of difficult topics than expressing them herself (like posting someone else’s comments about he US backing out of the Paris Agreement on her instagram, avoiding giving long speeches about her relationship with Chyler because it makes her emotional, letting Katie- who has more experience on this matter- take the wheel with explaining where they stand, liking Jeremy’s apology but not posting one of her own). She’s an introvert awkward type, not a Supergirl Hope Speech type. The only thing she really seems comfortable talking about is Kara’s characterization and growth, because it’s what she knows best and has lines ready to go.
As for Katie herself:
She laughed, and it wasn’t an awkward laugh. She thought it was funny. People have been posting pictures of her reaction that are misleading, but this was her initial laugh:
That’s a genuine laugh. Taking a single frame of a laughing face and adding the words “help me” over it will make anyone look like they’re faking being amuse. But this is a real laugh.
And it’s not the end of the world.
Because she didn’t think it would hurt anyone. At least not in that moment.
Later on, after thinking about it and having a lot more experience with these specific kinds of wlw fan situations than the rest of the cast, she re-emphasized her support.
And Melissa agreed 100%.
The cast was not trying to mock anyone, but to say something dramatically in jest, not realizing that it’s actually hurtful. Like teasing someone about being short and then realizing that they are actually sensitive about it. The other person’s feelings are valid, but accusations that you hate short people are not.
There are other things that I have issue with that Jeremy said (and with Chris but I’m not gonna touch that). His use of the word “debunked”, as if Supercorp is a conspiracy theory, for example. His initial apology that was less empathetic than it was defensive (likely in response to aggressive as hell comments, to be fair).
But based on his follow up apologies, I think he’s starting to get where it went wrong, that fandom is really important to people and not a fickle thing, and even that his initial apology wasn’t good enough.
And Melissa isn’t going to post a formal apology. It’s not her style, she doesn’t write on social media like that at all. Even if she does feel bad that she hurt people’s feelings, her method of making it better will likely be saying positive things about Supercorp in the future. Which doesn’t make her fake or two faced, it makes her capable of growth and empathy.
They made a mistake and said something super insensitive, but not something homophobic. The intention and the knowledge behind words matters, and placing a double meaning of mal intent into those words (but of course absolving your fave of any connection to it) doesn’t help anyone.
@taurusclh I thought this was a great point made by a Supercorp fan and agrees with your perspective! I saw your argument with that one person and thought I should tag you in this. I love following he/she because he/she seems to be more of the nice Supercorp fan and I love the things she/he posts on his/her blog.
Thank you @laityashes for the tag. I like this read. I appreciate that someone is talking about the fact that people are hurt and that is valid, but that it was not homophobic, it was specific to these two. I also liked that Melissa’s agreement with the statement Katie made later was emphasized here. Many posted that Katie’s statement exonerated her, but never acknowledge that Melissa agreed.
I think there’s definitely something about the how of Jeremy saying, but again, he did apologize. But as for the “brave” comment, as you said, to me this was clearly about fandom, and it’s based on a very, very, very well deserved reputation. And no, not all K/L fans are verbally abusive, but the verbally abusive ones still come. They are what the actors experience. Even if they know there’s tons of other people who don’t do it, they still have to deal with the slews and slews of people who are like that.
To me it just boggles the mind how the people who do that and descend on the actors can actually pride themselves for doing that. You LIKE people being scared of you? Are are proud that you intimidate them into having to be nice to you? You call that fandom, you call that love when you pride yourself into scaring them into submission? Is that was makes people feel good and powerful?
Why? Because they are actors, and you “pay” them with views? People act like the actors are prostitutes who are theirs to abuse, where it is okay to treat them like shit and they have to take it, because you are the all glorious “fan”. And that’s what people are proud of and feel morally superior because of it?
If you have that view, whatever, but at least don’t romanticize it. If you walk into this situation of “well, of course actors have to suck up to us, we are their customers”, then maybe consider that no everybody genuinely loves their customers, especially not the rude and belligerent one.
People can wax on poetically about how they “love” the actors and how they inspire their fantasies and imagination. And then they turn around and actually think it is the duty of the actors to fulfill those fantasies (note: I don’t even mean sexual fantasies, I mean things like “oh, that actors or actress is so perfect and moral and always agrees with me 100% and shares my views on fandom and politics and experiences”). And when that illusion breaks, some people seem like they actually WANT the actors to keep up that illusion due to fear and they are proud of having actually successfully badgered and intimidated actors or writers.
Is this really what people want? To enforce a relationship of fear and intimidation? You do 100% exactly what I like, or else I’ll shitstorm you and try to ruin your career and get your show cancelled? Not because the show (that many more people work on btw) is now worse than before, but because you angered me, and now I want to try and punish you?
Maybe for people who have been bullied this indeed is what makes them feel powerful, to have power over people due to fear. But then at least have the decency to not sugarcoat it and stop pretending that it has anything to do with love and morals. It’s asshole behavior, plain and simple.
If something like a loving relationship between show, actors and fans can really exist then maybe it shouldn’t be based on fear and trying to blackmail or browbeat them.
And if it is a business transaction relationship, then the SHOW is the product. If you like the show, watch it. If you don’t like the show, don’t watch it. Don’t watch a show you don’t like because you are invested what an actor says in real life. And maybe consider not giving up on a show you do like just because of something an actor said in real life. Actors are actors. Not your personal prostitutes. Their personal lives and opinions should not be considered part of the product. And no, just because they get paid to do interviews for the show doesn’t mean that you own them and they are yours to abuse.
If somebody on a show is a bad actor, how much verbal abuse of them is morally justified? Similarly, if somebody is bad at PR and giving interviews, how much verbal abuse is morally justified?
Sorry, had to rant. I’m just so sick of this “dance, monkey, dance, oh, you fell, now KNEEL before me and take my abuse” attitude that some fans (of any shipper persuasion, in various fandoms) have vis a vis the actors (remember! Not even the people who make character decisions on the show!). And when it gets coupled with verbal abuse and destructive behavior that gets only even creepier.
No, most fans are like that, but if you encounter even 10 or 20 of those types at once, consistently, I have sympathy of why that would be scary and unpleasant as fuck. And it creeps me out when behavior like that is starting to get idealized and praised as heroic and passionate. It’s not. It’s unhealthy and mean spirited.
schoolgirl crush vs. love and thirst
i’ve tried to stay silent on this whole thing and i always try to avoid the chris antis because i can’t be bothered with them most of the time but this has gone way too far and i’ve had enough and this is all i’m saying on it.
this is dedicated to EVERYONE who is dragging chris wood and calling him a homophobe because of a quote that is going round that has been taking out of context and failed to actually post the whole quote. WATCH the video before calling him out because i’ve seen and spoken to so many people who have “cancelled” chris wood just because of the quote that is going round and then when i’ve showed them the video they’ve said “oh… he didn’t do anything wrong” did he say the quote that’s going round? YES. but was that all he said? NO. he said it in a sarcastic tone and then said it was sarcasm (with the intention to be sarcastic when he said it, not just say something shitty and then blame it on sarcasm or say it was a joke) it was OBVIOUSLY sarcasm, he OBVIOUSLY disagrees with what he said which is why he said it SARCASTICALLY, he was mocking the fact that some people actually think they have the right to tell people what their sexualities are. You are ALL agreeing with him. his point is still valid just because it was done sarcastically.
he didn’t interrupt katie at all and she actually laughed at the comment (again, watch the video, that’s just a fact) and then she later made the same point that he had previously made except she didn’t do it in a sarcastic way. they both made exactly the same point!!
as for the song video… people saying shit like chris was singing along or laughing his ass off, WATCH THE VIDEO (not the one above but it’s the recap video on MTV’s youtube, idk if some of y'all know that seeing as most of you haven’t even seen the video you’re just going on what people say) which isn’t fair because this fandom is BIASED to hating everything chris does and have since he first appeared on SG.
chris was THE ONLY cast member to not laugh during the song. THE ONLY one. katie laughed (she was in fact laughing her ass off that she was practically crying), david laughed, odette laughed, mehcad was singing along and obviously it was jeremy and melissa who sang the song. he looked uncomfortable for the whole part of the song about supercorp.
if you want to hate chris just because you hate him or because he doesn’t hate karamel or because he said once that mon-el was a good guy or because he sang (along with most of the cast) a song about daxam, if you really want to hate him because of any of those reasons then just fucking own up to it. don’t call him homophobic because you think that justifies hating him more than the reasons listed above.
i’m not going to make this about why chris shouldn’t even be hated because that’s a whole other thing. ive tried again and again with people and at the end of the day people just want to hate chris. i’ve actually seen people ADMIT that chris didn’t really do anything wrong but “oh well i’ve never liked the guy” so let’s post this out of context quote and call him a homophobe so everyone who isn’t in the sg fandom hates him with us
also to all the people i’m blatantly going to have coming at me i am NOT saying anything about the other cast members or what happened with the song this is solely about chris and what actually happened, and the video proves it so this isn’t for a fight.
Mon-El: Hero of Earth defending it’s people!
I love you for making this oh gifmaker! Mon-el kicking some serious ass, Valor rising! His ‘Sorry not sorry’
If it comes down to it, you use it. I won’t be the reason this planet suffers.
#married
thank you chris wood, for an amazing first season of supergirl, thank you for playing our outer space stray puppy, thank you for making me smile every monday, thank you for making me laugh, thank you for making me cry. thank you for the little things you do and the faces you make and the way you deliver certain lines that show how much thought you’ve put into playing this character, thank you for it all. i hope you know just how much you are loved and appreciated for playing this part, and know that no matter what happens next season, i’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching mon-el, and it’s all down to you. you are awe and some! (◕‿◕✿)
“You said I’m proud of you. It didn’t make me feel any better at the time, but it was something to hold on to.”
Ok but imagine Kara getting home without Mon-El and things are exactly like they left them. He left the book he was reading on the nightstand, some of his clothes are scattered on the floor, his cookbook on the kitchen countertop, his side of the bed unmade and Kara can’t bring herself to tidy the place up because she wants to keep his memory alive in the apartment for as long a possible and she keeps waiting for him to burst in bringing some potstickers or ice cream but he never does. Also she sleeps with one of his shirts. I’m just saying.
