Aiden instantly recognized the name and instantly knew that he probably shouldn’t be talking to her. He generally tried to stay away from members of the North coven, not wanting to hear Beatrice bitch at him for anything else. He considered leaving the girl, knowing it would be easy enough to just get up and walk away, but he didn’t want to. 

He hated that Beatrice stood in the way of him still, that she had any kind of influence over his life anymore. He would never truly get along with this girl from another coven and he would take her down in an instant if he needed to, but for now he wanted a drinking buddy and he wouldn’t let a psychotic ex stop him from having a good time. “Ah, an Archibald. You have a twin brother, right?”

Karen looked looked up at him her eyes widening slightly, “Uhh, yeah I do. Kai..” She nodded. She really hadn’t thought he would know her last name and if he did she just assumed it would be a familiar sounding last name not that he would actually know who she was or the fact that she had a twin brother. There wasn’t a lot of people that would know that kind of information..

The thought running through her mind was, he’s got to be a warlock.. “Soo, should I ask how you know that or..?” She bite her lip. Karen didn’t want to make things awkward, seeing as up until now she was starting to like the idea of having him as a drinking buddy for the evening. But she knew she needed to be careful depending on who he was.

“There you go again,” Alfie laughed bitterly. “God, why do you even bother? I never did shit for you and yet here you are! Still trying! Just give up, Karen!”

“Well you used to be one of my best friends!” She huffed, “Why do you have to push me aways? So what Im just suppose to keep this huge secret for you, but you won’t even talk to me anymore? How is that even fair?”

“I have always been a hardass, haven’t you noticed?” Bea laughed a little as she sat next to the brunette. She liked Karen, she was hard-working in her studies and she was out-going in her personality. She knew everything was perfect for the girl, because in truth she deserved it probably more than anyone else.. She worked hard with her spells, she did well with her studies and she had a bright future ahead of her and Bea wanted to be part of that. However, in their world people could die any second- If you used your magic out of control and lost everything, you’d die. If someone poisoned you, someone cursed you, you could become crippled for life. “And you Karen-” Beatrice smiled kind, sweet and comforting. “Will always be loved by me.”

“Well thats true, you are just no fun at all.” She teased laughing. Karen and Beatrice weren’t the exact same person. But Karen felt like they balanced each other out. Karen had always been the kind of soft soul, and Kai had been her back bone. Though nobody could truly replace Kai in her life, but she felt like Beatrice was as close as it would get. Karen looked out for people, she took care of people but with her and Beatrice took care of each other. “Aw, you sap.” She smiled nudging her shoulder against the other girls. “Thanks Bea, I honestly don’t know what I would do with out you.”

His hand instinctively rose to press against the necklace hidden behind his black shirt. It practically burned his skin. What was he supposed to say? No, please stay? She would expect an apology, regret and shame. Kai had none of it and if he did, he sure as hell wouldn’t let it show. “If you insist,” he gestured for her to show that he had no wish to hold her back against her will. It was the only way Kai could show that Karen was still, and would always be, the most important person in his life.

Karen struggled, she hadn’t seen Kai in so long and it felt so good just to be near him again but at the same time it was like a blow to the gut reminding her how long he had been away from her. She turned to walk away but something stopped her, “Are you okay? I mean have you been okay all this time?” She asked her throat tightening, and she couldn’t turn and face him. Though she hated that he left her she needed to make sure he was alright. He was still her brother after all.

Aiden nodded as she spoke of her family. He wondered if she was a witch, and if so, which coven did she belong to? He knew most of the family names in the covens, and as a Supreme, he should know the first names of the witches and warlocks in the community, but he had a tendency to lose track, especially with the younger ones. He debated asking her for her last name but curiosity easily won out over reason. “What’s your family name?”

She looked up at Aiden and raised an eyebrow, most people probably wouldn’t tell a complete stranger their last name but Karen figured it couldn’t lead to anything that bad by simply telling him her full name. He seemed nice enough after all, then again that was usually her down fall. She was to trusting of people, but she couldn’t help herself. “Archibald, Im an Archibald.” She told him honestly.

“This time. Keywords right there,” Cora carried on with her joke, yet her face was as straight as it was before. Cora held on to the flask, taking yet another sip before she spoke. “When haven’t I been honest, Karen?”

“Well I promise to be more careful next time,” She shook her head with a laugh. “Just about every time before I catch you doing something your not suppose to be doing?”

Alfie wasn’t expecting her to get confrontational. He figured he would push, she would back down, and things would go back to their normal way. Seeing her stand up for herself, it brought something out in him. “You didn’t do anything wrong! That’s the thing! Your whole goody-two-shoes presence is annoying to me!”

Karen wasn’t normally the kind of person to pick a fight, but she was beyond frustrated and tired of being pushed away. “I wasn’t being a goody-two-shoes, I was being a good friend! Keeping your secrets and trying to be there for you and you just shut me out!” She said her vice starting to raise.

Beatrice grinned and let a small laughter leave her lips. She rarely laughed these days, she rarely even felt like the woman she had been fourteen years ago. However, Karen Archibald brought it out of her- The younger girl had it in her to make the supreme feel good again and it was not only because they had very different views of life, but because they weren’t all that different. Karen was as curious as she had been and she was more than anything a firecracker of life. “Oh I am not going to let you get drunk- I am the supreme.”She said with a stern look and a ironic look. “I will not be responsible of your drunken self- therefore-” Her lips spread out in another grin before one more joyous laughter left her lips. “I am getting drunk with you.”

Karen felt like she had a connection with Beatrice, and it was because of that connection or bond with her that she felt so at ease when she was around her. Not that Karen ever really had a lot of people in her life that made her feel uncomfortable, but it was just different with Beatrice. She didn’t need to pretend like everything was okay around her and that took a weight off of her shoulders. “What? Did you all of a sudden become a the hardass kind of supreme?” She teased. Karen laughed when she finished her sentences, “Now thats the Beatrice I know and love.” She grinned.

“Or you need to be more attentive. I could’ve been a serial killer for all you know. You’d be dead on the floor by now.” Cora’s humor was dark but it was the only humor that really got her gears going, even if she was the only one to find it funny. “I can’t promise anything. It’s too fun not to do it again” the blonde said as she took the flask and took a sip.

“Well I suppose I’ll just count myself lucky this time.” She replied shaking her head with a small laugh. She was beyond used to Cora’s dark comments at this point. “At least your honest.” She rolled her eyes and chuckled.

Fuck. He froze momentarily as he heard the familiar voice. It was darker, more adult than his old memories of it but he knew exactly who it was. It wasn’t a sense of regret or even guilt that froze Kai in his seat. He just didn’t like being caught off guard. He was back to himself seconds later. “Someone has to put some junk into this trunk.”

Karens felt like her heart was about to pound right out of her chest, she hadn’t talked to Kai since he ran away. Part of her was still so upset with him, the other part just wanted to run and hug him but she couldn’t do it. Her feet were glued to the spot. “That excuse didn’t work when we are kids, and it doesn’t really now either.” She said immediately thinking of all the times she had tried to get him to eat healthy when they were younger, which squeezed at her heart. “I should um.. I should go..”

“I do know. In fact, that’s why I’m here. And it was going quite nicely until about 3 minutes ago…”

“Its not like I came out here to ruin your fun Alfie.. I was just walking.” She sighed, “But you know, you can’t just avoid me forever. What did I do that was so wrong?”

“I know, I know,” he sighed deeply for the dramatic effect before his hand dug into the bag again. Kai didn’t care enough to see who it was he was speaking to. Ignorance was bliss after all, was it not? “I shouldn’t be eating these, they go straight to my hips but they’re delicious. Sinful even.”

Karen saw that him from the back, she could just see the back of his head from over the top of the chair. It was like something was drawing her in, as she came around to the side she saw it was Kai. She sucked in a small breath, but stay silent as he hadn’t seemed to realize who it was yet. She debated turning and walking away before he noticed it was her, “You did always have a weakness for junk food.” The words were out before could stop herself.

“Huh,” he nodded. “Do you often come outside in the dead of night and drink by yourself?” Yes, a part of him was just trying to make conversation, but he also had his ulterior motives. He needed to know if yet another one of his secret study places was no longer as secure as he once thought…

Karen stopped and scratched her head, “uhh, no.. well sometimes? I guess its just nice to get away on my own for a while, you know?” She replied. Karen wasn’t exactly a huge drinker, but with everything going on sometimes she just felt like she needed an escape for a little while.

“Yeah, those girly drinks are shit,” he laughed. “Though a Sex on the Beach sounds nice right about now. I have no idea what it actually entails, but it sounds delightful.”

“Yeah, though to be fair I had my girly drinks phase. Though I think I’ve gotten passed it.. for the most part.” She chuckled. “Im pretty sure it just like juice and vodka.. and like peach schnapps.. So definitely not anything like whats in my flask.” She shook her head laughing.

“Good point, but if you’re also drunk then I don’t know how well you’d be able to get away. Although I think it would be hilarious to see the two of us running while we’re drunk off our asses.” He grabbed the flask back from her and he could feel that it was starting to run low already and he knew that they’d have to find a new source of alcohol soon. “Very much local. My family has been here for generations.”

“I suppose thats true, but who knows maybe I could out drink you for all we know. But either way, it would probably get pretty sloppy. If anyone saw us they would probably just be like, look at those drunken idiots.” She laughed. “Same here, my family put roots down here a long time ago.” She nodded, though she wondered how she hadn’t met Aiden before if they had both grown up around here.

He chuckled at her answer, genuinely amused. “Yeah, not many people are brave enough to share their drinks with random strangers they meet out on the town. For all you know, I could be a blood thirsty serial killer,” he joked, winking at her before taking the flask back once again. He took a small sip, deciding he should probably be polite and not down the whole thing himself. “So are you a tourist or do you live around here?”

Karen seemed to consider his reasoning, trying to hold back the smile forming on her lips. “Well all the more reason to share my drinks with you. If you are a drunk, I probably have a much better chance at surviving.” She teased, letting out a laugh. Karen took the flask holding onto it while she spoke, “I live and grew up around here actually. And what about tourist or local?” She replied him taking another drink from the flask and holding it out for him to take.

He took a pull from the flask, wincing as the liquor burned on the way down. “Never knew you were one for the strong stuff,” he remarked, handing it back to Karen. “I have to admit, I’m a bit surprised…” It was more than he had said to Karen in a long time, and he knew he was opening himself up to the possibility of an actual conversation, but he figured that if he kept her mind occupied, she wouldn’t notice the book stored behind his back.

Karen couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped her lips at his reaction to what was in her flask, “Well it does the trick much better then the really girly drinks.” She shrugged. Karen couldn’t even remember when the last time Alfie had said more then a few words in passing to her, which was only making it harder for her to figure out what to say to him now.
