top five : characters you've written, characters you didn't write, videogames, old songs?
put ātop 5ā anything in my ask and i will answer ok go
iām giving this the caveat of recently because oh boy am i an indecisive bean, and these are in no particular order! under the cut because this got lengthy.
CHARACTERS IāVE WRITTEN :
EDWARD: edie, my alien son. it was at once very strange and very fun to write a character who didnāt know how to connect on a human level, simply due to... not being human. i didnāt get to write him as often as iād like to, given a lot of real life factors while retired was running, but iām happy ( read: honestly kind of emo but satisfied ) with how his story turned out. the moment of bonding with dante after all those years? the confession to will that heās been trying to be him for so long? the blue slushee left on eveās doorstep before he left to go help somewhere else? i still think about all the little moments because they mean a lot to me.
CADELL: sometimes i like getting knee deep in lore and that was the case for cadell. i have loved the chronicles of prydain since i was a kid, so i this was true twice over. he fits into a mix of disney, alexander, and folklore canon and i had a lot of fun thinking about the implications of decaying magic on someone who was trying to live, as well as the relationship of power when tradition demands violent transitions. am i still mad about the fact that demilich means what it means when it should be called archlich? yes.
CHARLEY: charley is a character from a ā weird western ā dnd / written rpg hybrid iām currently in ( it wasnāt intentionally so, but when you have a group of recent english major grads playing together sometimes the writing just... happens ). itās set in a fantasy universe, with magic, but with the aesthetics of the old west, and charley is just.. honestly a gem. heās a high wis / low int fighter whoās just trying his best to take care of his family, and is currently trying to deal with how he feels about discovering the fact that his sister is part of a notorious gang of bank robbers.Ā
ALIZEH: iāve only just started playing alizeh, but i really love her? this is another instance of me really enjoying digging into the research part of writing a character i believe, as i enjoyed spending time trying to weave together her current story with the story of the god she is personifying. additionally though, i like trying to get insider her head as she, someone whoās always in control, watches as the world changes into something she was unprepared for. sheās going to have to adjust, but sheās so obsessed with her own narrative that iām not sure she will.Ā
GREGOR: dr. adair really is a whole lot and i love him for it. i loved researching aliens and the related topics to play him, and i hope that he gets to a place where heās more comfortable with himself soon.
CHARACTERS I DIDNāT WRITE :
KAELāS ARTHUR: artie was fun, and sometimes thatās all a character really needs to be. however, kael did not stop there, because artie wasnāt just fun. it was very clear why artie was the way he was, and i just really appreciated that. pirates didnāt go as expected but artie was definetly a gem to come out of it.
KAYāS BETH: i wrote more with eve, but beth was so fascinating. the part that sticks with me is how you talked about what you expected beth to be, versus what she actually became, and i think she just felt very real because of it.Ā
ROZāS TANGO: i donāt think iād ever seen a character like tango in a group before, and iām glad that roz was the one i saw do this. i think it would be incredibly easy to take this and turn it into a bit of a gimic but i... i just loved tango. the fact that i got emotionally attached is evidence enough, but i think the thought that clearly went into the character should be acknolwedged as well.
LILAHāS JACKIE: so jackie existed for all of two minutes anywhere except our discord server and i donāt care, i love this woman so much? that is all, thank you.
and the fifth spot goes to all the fantastic characters iāve written with this year but that i lack the brain power to remember cause my memory is shit.
VIDEO GAMES :
iām not much of a videogame person, honestly! i pretty much exclusively play STARDEW VALLEY currently and not much else. i waste too much time on those idle phone games too.Ā
OLD SONGS :
i wasnāt sure how we were qualifying old songs so i just did anything that was pre 2000!
THE PRETENDER by jackson browne
THE WANDERER by dion ( less for the song, but more for the fact that this past year i lived in an apartment with 7 people and one of the people there would always clean on saturday mornings and this song was on his playlist so i heard it a lot, and itās like a nice memory of waking up to music playing, people being around, and the knowledge that weād all be going to breakfast together soon. can you tell i miss social interaction? )
ANGEL FROM MONTGOMERY by bonnie raittĀ
WATERLOO by abba
LAYLA by eric clapton ( specifically the mtv unplugged version )

NO ONE CAN DENY THAT THESE ARE DIFFICULT TIMES. When news first spread of the state-sanctioned partnership between the Bolshoi and the New York City Ballet, the world held its breath. Now, December marksĀ the three-month anniversary of the Americans first arriving in Moscow. Premiering a new rendition of Tchaikovskyās SwanĀ Lake, they hope to show the world an emerging new confidence between the U.S. & U.S.S.R. ā no one has to know what secrets each tries to keep hidden. In times of uncertainty, it is the mask you wear which keeps you alive. Play your part, and do it well, theyāre WATCHING.
PAS DE DEUXĀ is an upcoming, literate, skeleton roleplay inspired by The White Crow, Red Sparrow, Tinker Toy Solider, The Man From U.N.C.L.E and spy movies in general. ā¦Ā The RP will focus heavily on character / plot development by exploring themes such as the cost of war, defining virtue, beauty & aestheticism as deference, and the difficult choice between duty, loyalty, and love.
hold my hand and tell me that you donāt see the dried blood between my fingernails. look into my eyes and tell me that you see life in them; thrumming and thriving and throbbing. kiss me and donāt tell me that i taste like poison and something worse. love me and tell me that iām good for you.
the spotify wrapped needs to adjust for mental breakdowns. if i played a song 300 times in 1 day and then NEVER again it should not qualify for my top song of the year šĀ
*sprinkling my traits throughout my ocs* this one is the kid in me and all my wonder. this one is my self-worth issues and anger. this one is my absolute desire to be over six feet tall
I was rewatching the Henry Crabgrass scene, because its amazing, and Iāve come to the conclusion that meeting Jester must feel like being Dorothy and walking out into the Land of Oz for the first time. Like, Vex had this incredible passive perception, and it feels like this campaign Laura decided to invent a character with massive passive persuasion instead.
I mean it really says something about Lauraās acting abilities and general creativity, because Jester can just do things no other player could dream of, and often has. Sheās gotten, in canon, several characters to fall in love with her, and to our knowledge, is totally unaware of this. Sheās kept a weasel alive that we all know deep down shouldnāt be. She got Essek Thelyss to be endeared to her despite not being a wizard, and to my mind, thatās fucking incredible. Sheās convinced she can get her estranged mom and dad back together parent-trap style, and judging by her last conversations with both of them, it might just work.
The tricking of the Hag may be the greatest moment in Critical Roleās entire run, and only Jester (and by extension, Laura Bailey) could both think that would work and be capable of making it work, stats be damned. Think about the moment during Traveler Con where Artagan is getting pulled away; itās not the fact that Jester loves him that he gets released, but instead that he loves her. The sheer magic she just brings into the world around her is so intense, that she literally asks the grass what happened to her old friendās body, and with a charming personality and a remarkable memory for a weed, it tells her exactly what she needs to know. Disney Princesses aināt got nothing on her.
And itās remarkable that you have this character who has so many people willing to die for her, kill for her, drop everything and do anything for her, and the consequences of this great power, this great burden, could not possibly be held in better hands. It could not be given to anyone less likely to abuse it for anything more that some mostly harmless pranks. And itās not that sheās perfect. because she has plenty of flaws (her jealous streak and inability to take her hurts as seriously as everyone elseās most prominent among them); but her incidental charm, and letās be honest, Lauraās incredible acting, just sort of draw your eyes away from them, so you have to work against your own impulses to ever notice them in the first place.
Maybe its the Universe balancing itself for Lauraās terrible luck with her dice. Or maybe Matt is just as charmed as the rest of us.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WHEN YOUāRE WRITING YOUR DOCS & PAGES THAT PUTTING SEVERAL SPACES BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL WORDS IS REALLY INACCESSIBLE.
this goes especially when paired with certain fonts. i understand wanting to maintain an aesthetic, but when itās at the price of other people being able to read or process what you wrote, it just isnāt good.Ā
i donāt even have a reading disability, but i do have serious processing and focus issues as well as overstimulation issues. i find that i am completely unable to connect or understand what youāve written because iām expending so much effort trying to read the font and spacing itself.Ā
okay but like deathless is so enlightened⦠when madame lebedeva teaches marya about makeup itās like a crash course in the idea of femininity as performance and performance as an extension of oneās will⦠for marya, femininity is a cage she feels she has been put in, a role she has been forced to play; in order to achieve some semblance of freedom, she had to wait for a husband to come the door, she had to put herself into the hands of a man, and she has found that that, too, is a cage⦠koschei literally tells her that he is going to take her will⦠but now here is this woman, a friend, a mentor, telling her that these are all just roles to play ā devoted wife, wily seductress, innocent princess ā costumes of womanhood that she can put on and take off whenever it suits her, whenever she wills. she can make anyone think anything of her, can make herself into whatever she needs to be ā her performance says, āi will not be denied.ā and sheās then able to trick others into believing she is the fearsome and legendary baba yaga just with the makeup and clothes and perfume she wears, just because she performs it, just because she wills it. but itās still not enough for marya!!! she can dress up as a commander of armies, as the foreign wife of a soldier, as a dominatrix keeping a man chained up in her basement but itās still all for other people, itās all for men⦠she laments to koschei that ānothing in me was not made by youā⦠she can put on all these different roles and will several different versions of herself into being but none of them are true, they were all versions of herself meant to be seen by someone else. and the author, catherynne m. valente, as well as the audience, knows that this is because marya is a fairy tale character created to precisely to be seen, and to teach a lesson to children, but valente takes this character and makes her real, makes her long for an identity of her own ā but itās an identity she will never have, because she was born a woman, born to be consumed by othersā¦. even when she takes the job as an officer ā an agent of a government controlled by men, fighting in a war started by men ā alongside ushanka, another woman, it turns out that ushanka is just an illusion, just another performance, too. in the end, marya finds some semblance of peace by reconciling all the roles she has ever played, all the girls she has ever been, as different parts of her, different parts of a whole, but what does that say about womanhood that she is merely the sum of her perfomances??? the ending is bittersweet; the story must continue, she must keep playing her parts. āyou still have to wake up every morning. you still have to live.ā
tl;dr catherynne m. valente wrote a powerful fable paralleling the way fictional woman in fairytales are reduced to their roles to the way real life women are confined to the performance of femininity and some of yāall just wanna make edits of marya and koschei being ādarkā and āedgyā
