Leaving Chicago 👋🏾🚊
Roaming around Chicago 🌆
what have I learned?
In Mobile Digital Arts I have learned numerous things. I learned many art terms that I honestly use daily but never considered myself artistic! The main thing I learned is that my mobile devices can be worth more than just texting my friends and family. Being able to use my cellphone and iPad for class was neat! I used it in ways I never imagined. When I first heard of the class I was skeptical but thought I would enjoy it. Now, I am so happy I took it and wish I could take it again! Using brushes 3 to create artistic images was a blast! I always go back and look at my tumblr and notice how I progressed over the semester! I really took chances in this class! I didn't stick to what I was good at, I challenged myself more and more with each assignment. If there was anything I would change it would be the amount of time we used vine! I wish I could have used it for more projects because it made me use my creative side. I had a vine before the class but I didn't use it to do something artistic, I really just revine other videos. I use to hate how long the class was but I grew to appreciate it because it gave me time to get my assignments done and not having to worry about it at home.
vine.
For my first vine, I did plan it out. I took a quick snippet of each item required for the dip. Then I did a video of me putting the ingredients together. Lastly, I did a video of me mixing it together. I had planned on adding me dipping a chip at the end but I accidentally recorded too long. In the vine you can hear a weird noise, I did not plan this part. That was actually my boyfriend being a weirdo in the background. However, it added to the video and gave it a little more life so I liked it. I liked the end result because it was exactly what I wanted and it walked the viewer through the process of making it.
In my second vine, it was me eating a bagel. Yes, just that simple. I left the same background for each snippet because I wanted it to seem as if the bagel was just disappearing bite by bite. I planned it to an extent, but it did not take much work. I only took one take for it as well and I enjoy the final product.
television?
When it comes to watching shows, I change it up. I do a combination of binge watching and watching shows as they air on television. So, I guess you can say I am old school and new school. Over the summer, I tend to keep up with shows because my schedule is less demanding. However, there are times when I watch shows on demand because I wasn't home when it aired.
On the other hand, while I am at school I am all over Netflix, Directv app, or VH1 app. As a tradition, every year I pick a series on Netflix that has multiple seasons and I binge watch it while I'm at home, school, work, on the bus to an away game, or on my phone. My freshman year, the show was pretty little liars. There were multiple seasons so I clung to it like magnet on a refrigerator. Last year, I mainly just watched movies. This year, I became addicted to gossip girl. It was perfect, one because it was full of drama and two because it had SIX seasons on Netflix! I watched it all the time. I especially choose a show every year because as a basketball player, we don't get much of a Christmas break. So, for those three weeks here in south bend with nothing to do but basketball, I watch Netflix every chance I get.
resources.
For project eight I really just brainstormed on my own. I looked at the Oblique Strategies but ended up not really using any of the ideas. So, in order to get my brain juices flowing, i scrolled through my pictures in my phone. I don't do this just so I can trace the image and get a good grade. I look in my phone because all semester I have been randomly taking pictures because I think they would be something neat to draw later. So, as I scrolled through my pictures I found a picture of a close-up of my jeans. I liked the way the image was so I began to draw it then picked verbs that I thought would go with it. Then for the next two pictures I just used the verb list and thought of things to draw with it.
more ideas?
My go-to source is Google! I use google for almost anything. If I want to know the definition of a word, how to spell a word, how to pronounce a word, what a bug looks like, random facts about cities(such as population), an answer to a question, how to say something in another language, and etc. These are things that I google daily, because I really believe that google knows just about everything. For example, there was a time when I just could think of a way for my teammates and I to have a better connection on the court. In order to solve this problem I went to google-- "team building exercises". It is just a nice tool that I utilize very well, even have the app on my phone. However, that is not my only resource, I love to ask my parents what they think as well. They are wise and know a ton more than I do just from experience so I utilize their smarts. I trust in what they say but there are times I take what they say and tweak it a little just to try out, so I kind of take a chance.
ideas! ideas! ideas!
When it comes to thinking of new ideas, I have luck sometimes. There are times when something creative just pops in my head but then there are times when I can not think of anything at all. I like do try new things, so it not often that I want to recycle an idea. If I do end up in a situation where I use an old idea of mine or of someone else's then I tweak it a little bit to make it different. Depending on the situation, I tend to use google for new ideas. Google and I are best friends, it helps me with e v e r y t h i n g. When I am trying to solve any problem, first I must get all the information I can. This happens in every situation, whether I am helping a friend with relationship problems or just trying to solve a math problem, I need to make sure I have all the information I can get. Next I brainstorm and think of multiple ways to solve the problem. After I have ideas I try to play out scenarios in my head to try to get a grip on the best solution. As I said before, there are times I get stuck and can't think of an idea or solution so when this happens I just remove myself from the situation to relax my mind then come back to it once it is not on my mind, but not too soon.
Question 9
The portrait I was most proud of was the one of myself. At first when we were presented this assignment I was nervous! I though for sure I would get a bad grade because I've never been good with drawing faces. However the strategy I used to build my confidence was to do the black & white image first, then do the gray scale, then I graduated to the color portrait. I was so proud of my self on the black & white then even more proud on the gray scale that I figured I was ready to conquer the color portrait. To start the color portrait I did the shape of my head with my skin tone && the color of my jacket, just to have the background in. Then on the next layer I did the eyes, nose, and mouth. This was a very complicated layer but drawing an eye is a job. I had to get the shape of the eye & the multiple colors and things around it from the curves of the face. I didn't want it to seem one dimensional. The next layer was easy yet hard at the same time, it was the layer of the hair (eyebrows as well). My hair was curly the day of the photo so I had to capture it in the portrait. Seems easy but I had to make sure it was full because I have a lot of hair. On the next layer I did all the highlights of my face and jacket from the light. Then on the last layer I put the logo of my jacket and the white parts.

Question 8
As I was scheduling classes for this semester I knew for a fact I wanted to take Mobile Digital Arts. My boyfriend took this class last spring and I would see him doing his homework. He would draw things on the Brushes app and I thought it look fun. I had even went as far as downloading it on my phone and playing around trying to draw things. So it wasn't my first time using the Brushes app to make an image per say but it was because I didn't really focus in and try to create a nice image like I do now. In class we create our own images of something we have seen or something we picture in our head. I use my finger to create these images instead of a stylus because I have had success. A lot of people say using a stylus is easier but I feel more in control when I use my finger. I enjoy using my mobile device as a creative tool because I can always have it on me, which helped me be able to work on my projects at anytime. Also I like being able to use my cell phone for class work, makes it more worth the money! (:
I have not really discovered any limitation with working on my touch screen device. In all honestly I like it better than drawing on paper. I say this because when I make a mistake I can correct it without worrying about having dirty marks on my paper or the eraser marks. I hate having to worrying about resting my had as I draw and worrying about getting the paper dirty. Also when I decide on a color then realize I don't like it and having to start over. The only limitation I can think of with using a touch screen mobile device would be that I can not have my work in a hard copy. But that isn't that big of a deal because I would probably lose it.
Question 07
As I work on my still lives on the Brushes app I face changes of dimensions. I find it how to make the pictures that are not just flat look like they are not just flat. For instance, the image of my bathroom. I was having a very hard time trying to show the waves on the shower curtain. I have a hard time doing this on paper so I did not think it would be easier on my phone. I have solved this problem now. I now just go for it, if it doesn't look right then ooh well. The more you do something then the better you will get at it. ii wish I would have just went for it with the shower curtain but not putting the waves did not ruin the image. It still turned out pretty nice.
Another unforeseen challenge is making it look as much like the original as possible. I am somewhat of a neat freak so I hate when things do not flow. I try my best to makes the image look as realistic as possible by using the exact colors of the original and getting every line. I have gotten better at this since the first image I did on Brushes. I am becoming more comfortable with drawing on my phone; and I am beginning to challenge my self more each time.
The worse problem of them all is when I began to draw on the image, meaning I did not start a new layer. This is the worst of all because I have no choice but to start over.

Question 06 • Week of February 16
It is true, I grew up learning to make marks with with tools. It all began with crayons. We were taught to use the crayons to color within the lines, which at the time seemed to be a very hard task. I had no control over my hands it seemed because I would always end up coloring outside the lines. After that came the pencil. It was much thinner and came to a smaller point. I learned to write my name with this tool, as well as other words. It was also a hard task at first because it would struggle with having control over how I wanted the lines and curves. Eventually, I learned to control the pencil in my hand and it improved my hand writing a lot. After I mastered the pencil I could use any tool, such as markers, color pencils, and pens. My ability to draw with my finger does not surprise me. It is kinda of like good hand writing leaders to better hand control. At least that what I think. I am able to draw lines, not always straight but good enough. On the lines that I do have a hard time with, I just zoom in extremely close, which give my finger more wiggle room and isn't as hard. With that being said, I can say I have a comfortable technique when it comes to drawing on my cell phone on iPad. I zoom in on the tough areas and free hand the rest. I like using the Brushes app because it is actually my work. I do not use a straight line tool or circle tool. I draw them myself. I do not use the tool that mimics whatever you draw on the other side because I enjoy the thrill of seeing if I will get it right.
