i dont think i have a proper quick run down of karl besides the doc so it’s time for a spectacularly bad summary: karl & carl represent the entirety of humanity as they’re one soul split in two. it’s generally said by satan themselves that carl and karl were simply too much to put into one entity. theyre the guardians of heaven and hell and fully unwillingly to be in the position that they’re in. it has taken thousands of years and ( in karl’s case ) so much mental abuse for them to do something about it. but every road leads back to heaven, even elevator brings them back to hell. they can perform magic, miracles, there is no limit and death is an old friend but even as they walk earth in their spare time, something or rather someone is always watching.

it’s jarring to remember what carl can’t grasp . a little stabbing pain at an open wound, never to be closed because its torn edges line up with every corner and stitch that is their other half . the missing piece of soul put into a different body and although karl plasters a smile onto his face, it’s broken . the mask has been shattered one too many times and even if the porcelain was still solid, carl knows, carl always knows but rarely remembers .
he waves that thought away . they’re being dramatic . centuries come and centuries go and the split soul remains alive within them, it’s the way things have always been . right? they can’t be alone for as long as they share a core; there simply is no without . and thus real optimism colors his cheeks and soon breathing ( they don’t need to breathe ) feels just a bit easier again . ❝ we have a place together now, c’mon . just you and me and everyone else who lives in the neutral space . ❞

a hand comes up to scratch at the stubble not yet shaven, the fingers dance across their own cheek to check for tears before uselessly looking for a pack of cigarettes . heaven took them . heaven always takes everything and if they could take karl’s facial hair, they would . eventually it’ll disappear, eventually they’ll come to work in a suit with shiny shoes but that’s just it, isn’t it . work in exchange for the safety of their loved ones . ❝ you know you can’t get rid of me, even when we’re in different places . ❞
they should’ve known better . a decade spent amongst humans and the oddest of qualities rediscovers as karl now knows, they can LOVE somebody . but nothing is made to last, nothing except heaven and hell and the never ending stream of lost souls he is forced to guide . it’s not fair, makes them want to shake those golden gates with the weight of their rage but nothing happens . no, karl has to play nice, has given up freedom, free will and yet in front of them stands their other half . it’s killing him, makes him wish that’s a fucking option for once but the pain doesn’t subside and again, nothing happens .

CARL
a soft giggle escapes at the sight of the locomotive, chooing and blowing steam as the toy travels across the hardship of the antique table towards carl. he’d known karl would like it. that’s why they picked it when the mcdonald’s employee was kind enough to ask which toys to include in all those happy meals. carl bends down to pick it up. when it’s placed on the table again, flowers instead of smoke grows out of the train as it creates an ocean of flowery fields as it travels across the table. carl always loves the simplicity in their magic – and the beauty that comes with it.
their smile lingers as he responds. “ don’t bully those poor sods in the sorting department. ” it’s not a reprimand; the tone of his voice has a whim of repetition to it. it’s carl’s unofficial job to keep karl in check – so he does, by the very uneffective way of words. ( “ do you even want to stop them? ” one of the demons had once asked. carl hadn’t had the heart to respond; they shouldn’t lie. )
“ let’s go on a weekend. maybe finally visit florida. what d’you say? ”
an eyebrow crooks as the suggestion falls easily from carl’s lips . it sounds airy but familiar, words heard a thousand times before but somehow they can’t be bothered to listen today . instead the huff of a laughter finds its way out of their throat as he turns around and digs through paper bags again . with the cigarette tucked into the corner of his mouth, karl finds a little bear with a red shirt, sporting a train conductor hat but as the train is moving on its own the little guy simply plays in its flowery tracks .
❝ or, ❞ a finger is held up to aide the dramatic pause, but they can’t hide the smirk forming onto their features . in their hand rest a third toy, a model airplane, and as karl takes the cigarette with his free hand, he blows smoke onto the toy . ❝ or we eat, i gently remind sorting how to do their job and then we see about florida . hm ? ❞ the airplane flies higher and higher until it’s drawing circles above an obviously heaven unfitting soul . all at once exhaustion finds its way back into his muscles and karl gives their other half the barest hint of a nod . ( yours, it says but the matter remains unspoken . )

carl hums in agreement. he’s been sending more souls upstairs than he’s been letting into heaven for the better part of the week – perhaps the ill handling of the sorting has finally reached heaven. “ i was hoping it wouldn’t get this far, but alas. ” they make a fleeting gesture, sending some fries to fly off onto the clinically polished floor. “ i’ll see if i can have a word with the boss, when i bring my weekly batch of goods. ”
having finally placed all the happy meals onto the table, he smiles. ash fingers stained the package, as did the flour on his sleeves, but carl knows better than to be self-conscious about such things around karl. hands on his sides, he keeps up with the smile, warm and broad. it was meant to be a surprise, but… he just can’t help himself. “ i’ve snuck in some glowsticks. ”
an exclamation ( not angel friendly ) of pure joy leaves their lips followed by the tiniest of jumps right where karl is standing . it takes but one swift motion for him to turn to the discarded bags and ruffle through one, two, three to find aforementioned glowsticks — quickly hidden away into the pocket of their slacks for later — and a toy to his liking . ever so gently a little locomotive gets placed on the table before eyes find they way back to their other half . a mirror albeit broken but the truth is exhaustion will marry their looks rather quickly . ❝ yeah, no, it’s been bad lately . ❞
karl waves his hand as he turns to look at the souls that are still waiting a shudder runs down his spine . a break is in order before more of this feeling washes over to carl . so with practiced motions a cigarette is produced, lit and the smoke finds its way into the locomotive, powering the toy to drive off the table . ❝ or, and hear me out, we have lunch together now and afterwards i go and mess with the sorting department myself . ❞

he’s gotten him as many happy meals as he can carry – which, considering his rather tall frame and so rather long arms, is a lot. carl loses some along the way as he stumbles out of the elevator. they smile as they approach, at karl rather than the greatness that is heaven, but he supposes the golden gate and puffy pinkish clouds are nice, too.
“ heard you weren’t having the best day ” , carl exclaims as he struggles to put all of the happy meals down. not much is heard in hell from heaven. carl more like felt it, although feeling doesn’t exactly describe it fully – they really need to figure out a word for this. “ so i decided to come and cheer you up. ”
❝ OH TOYS ! ❞ the words leave him far louder than expected but with oh so much enthusiasm it almost swallows their gratefulness . but they know better than to shout while on duty ( it’s rather frowned upon ) and thus long legs carry him forward . there is a soul standing in their way; there is a soul shoved away . it’s only once polished shoes find their dirty counterpart on pristine flooring that karl halts and beams at his other half .
❝ well, look at you . thanks . ❞ perhaps the dark circles under their eyes are far more telling than expected, perhaps it’s the odd knowledge of a torn soul asking to be mend but karl is more than happy to see hell’s guardian in this bright light . a fleeting glance is thrown over his shoulder, just in case, but save for the souls waiting in line, they’re alone . good . ❝ sorting’s been off all day . i don’t know if they have a new guy over there or whatever but this is a mess, i’ll tell you that much . ❞
