Annie Atkins’ workshop “Graphic Design for Filmmaking”

My year had a great start with the Annie Atkins’ workshop “Graphic Design for Filmmaking” end of January 2016. As soon as I entered the studio space in Dublin, I felt very welcomed and had the chance to chat with all other attendees in the reception area. Although located in a basement, the studio is surprisingly bright and open and has a friendly and cosy atmosphere.

All workstations were already prepared with tools and a folder with material to be used in the next two days, which was great, since we could start off straight away.

During the whole workshop, we were offered tea and snacks and entertained by host Jenna, who is a friend of Annie from her studies.

Day one started off with a good balance between theory and practice, studying some movie scenes and their scripts to recognise all the hints for a graphic designer. I liked that it was a hands-on exercise, noting down whenever you felt that there could be a piece of graphic design hidden in the script. It’s about sharpening your eye and reading between the lines and to see graphic pieces where they are not obvious at first.

The greatest take away from the first day I would say, is that a graphic designer for film needs to leave their comfort zone on a regular basis. For example figuring out signage of shop windows, not only the design but also the production. The importance of references can’t be denied either, to make a sign look like from the 19th century, well you need to “steal” from the 19th century. I am more conscious about this since coming from the workshop and will try building up my own reference library by taking pictures or saving photos whenever I come across them.

Day two was prop day. Finally it was time to dig out all the crafting skills and get the hands full with ink. A few exercises in calligraphy lead to preparing documents like Dracula's passport, a telegram and a letter addressed to Archibald Snatcher in Cheesebridge. The only downside for me was the choice of paper, which was a shame as it was unfortunately all too easy for the ink to bleed and I felt I struggled way more than I should have had. Of course it’s easy to blame the material, it’s been probably a mixture of this and me being a bit rusty with ink and feather.

Altogether, it’s been a great workshop in a very nice atmosphere. The group of attendees was well mixed with a bunch of friendly and easy going graphic designers, illustrators and product designers from a few different countries. Annie gave not only insights into the film industry but also hands-on exercises to give a taste of the daily work of a graphic designer on set. She’s been very friendly and happy to help and answer questions honestly and direct. I like that she was also quite strict with the time limits for the exercises, as I can imagine that you’d need to learn to work fast and clean as a designer on set.
