A heavy breath exhales from the phoenixes lungs, this part wasn’t easy. It involved acknowledging heavy emotions and she felt a little like an asshole, drawing Kasey’s emotions out of her. She normally preferred it when others choose to come to her but this required her intervention or Kasey could take her own life. “How have you been feeling lately?” She gives a beat for Kasey to choose to response or not. “I imagine not so good, I believe depression and lack of will to live have most likely been plaguing you and brain chemistry aside, that’s not your fault. I believe it’s something supernatural, that I was actually created as a phoenix to help fight against. They’re called Cubi, incubus for male, succubus for female. The gods made them from humans who had made deals with them. They are to exist and they are to feed off others through their soul, they have sex with people and each time they take a part of their soul. Once you’ve slept with a Cubi three times, they can take your entire soul and your magic. I have the ability to give you back your soul and your magic and I would like too.”

Kasey was slow to respond, she felt as though she was submerged underwater— and while such a feeling would usually bring her some delight; there were creatures there that she adored, marine animals and the way that light filtered down through the tops of the waves, now it simply made her lungs burn. “I—“ Rowan filled in the rest, and the words were clear enough, not so good. It was the easiest way to define it, the weight that sat on her chest and the demons that perched on her shoulders. It was a lot of information at once, and her brows curved in and blue eyes clouded over, misty with tears at the idea that her suspicions were true and that Thalia, as kind as she had been, had taken something dear from her. She flicked her attention back over the Rowan, before nodding. “Please.” Kasey’s voice was thin, so fragile it felt as though it could break if tripped on, rising up between them quietly. “Please give it back.”

They are going on a date. They are not dressed for the occasion, they are picking out snacks, they are going on a date. To the beach, the place they’d first met and it goes through her head on repeat in circles as if it’s a banner on a carousel. Winter finds herself almost floating towards the snacks and looking for anything that seems appetizing considering there is no way this is actually happening right now. She settles on some pretzels, her tea, and she’s looking at Kasey with this dreamy smile that can’t seem to leave her face. “I thought we’d already been over that you’re a creature from the ocean.”

“Have you had this yet?” She’d wound up getting a little tub of hummus to go with her pretzels and she dips one in it before presenting it to Kasey. Little strands of her hair blow against her face, free from the messy bun she’s put it in. They’re in her spot, the perfect little patch of grass just before the sand of the beach starts, facing out towards the waves. It’s comfortable there, feels more familiar to her than the snack section and whatever awkwardness she’d felt seemed to dissolve more and more as each wave beat against the sand. “It’s red pepper.”

Kasey leaned back on her palms, feeling the grit of sand against the skin and the softness of the grass—  it was something comforting, to be so close to the ocean, to smell the salt that peeled off of it and to know that the waves brought something new with them with every lap against the shore. She felt warm, not just because the sun was overhead but in Winter’s company— the sweetness of her attention brought a blush to her cheeks as she looked over. She was quite taken by the other woman’s profile, the swoop of her nose, the fullness of her smile, and it took her a moment to respond, shaking her head when she finally pieced together the question that was being asked of her.

“Not yet,” she said, looking at the pretzels before reaching for the one offered over, plucking it from Winter’s grip to pop into her mouth. She’d never had hummus before, but she didn’t want to say such a thing in case that was embarrassing, chewing idly as she worked out what it was that she thought of it. “It’s nice,” the spirit witch decided with delight, leaning in to get more. Her own taste in treats was juvenile, but she pushed a bag in Winter’s direction. “I picked up some Haribo, if you like those.”

“A furry?!” Ade’s eyebrows raise especially high, not expecting for Kasey to misunderstand her in such a way and she’s trying to keep the giggles at bay but in between laughter she speaks “Kasey, oh god, no. You’re hilarious.” She allows herself another bark of laughter before she attempts to clarify again. “A fury.. they’re kinda like a supernatural species all to their own. They worship the Erinyes and in return have been blessed with incredible fighting abilities, they’re kinda like the police agency behind wayward supernatural criminals.” Did she really believe Ade had just casually mentioned that their former oracle now took up a life of getting fucked in a dog costume? “I wish. Try bringing a Genasi home and just watch their heads pop off. It’s more a team effort when you’re a coven, you gotta considerate the team more when you act.” Not that she followed that rule herself, but they were her family, they couldn’t leave her behind now. “That’s cute, I like that.” The light stayed at Kasey’s last comment.

“You know, the people who wear the suits and the ears and—“ Ade was laughing, and she paused, letting the words trail off quietly. Embarrassment flooded the witch, and it was a bright scarlet stain that leeched up from under her collar to ruddy her cheeks, she hated being made to look stupid: she hated how often it happened. Of course she had misunderstood, and she shrunk inside herself, tugging her sleeves over her hands even as Ade began to explain what it was that she had meant. “I get it now,” Kasey said, swallowing dryly before she offered a smile once again. It stung, but it was water under the bridge— she would continue to move through the conversation, though with more care this time. “What’s a genasi?” Curiosity made her lean up on her toes, tapping at her lower lip as she eagerly tried to move past her slip up. “I’ve never heard of one before.”

“Yeah, sounds like she was a succubus.” Jakob said, “Cubi is the plural and gender-neutral term for them.” The witch offered. This person’s approach to what had happened them felt almost juvenile by comparison, like he was looking at it through a child-like lens that somehow made it all the more palatable. Sad didn’t quite cover it, the months he spent without his soul were… “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t get my soul back. That’s what she took from you, not just your magic. Your soul. It’s how they feed.” Jakob said further as he drew his attention back towards the spell he was weaving, one hand over the other as he delicately folded the slippery magic together. Gradually he could feel himself getting the hang of it. “Anything is better than how I felt before, all this- it has to mean something.”

She blinked, and pale brows curved in. “I didn’t know that there was magic like that.” In fact, there was far too much about magic that she didn’t know; most of the supernatural world was a mystery to the little witch, who pressed her lips together in discontent. “I thought she liked me.” It was a sad admittance, but not one for a stranger— Kasey brushed it off, moving past as she toyed with picking at the fabric of her sleeve. “And Rowan gave me my soul back. That magic is nicer, I think. To give, instead of taking.” She looked at the magic that Jakob used, and she considered. “I don’t know if it’s better or worse, but I feel less empty. I can talk to the spirits, and they keep me company. I used to be able to make whirlwinds, but that’s hardly anything at all. What kind of magic did you have?”

“I do.” Hyacinth offered before he canted his head and offered Kasey a stool to sit, a small set of flowers lay unbundled in a box that he’d clipped that morning from his greenhouse at the villa. “It’s a simple process once your fingers get used to it.” Hyacinth led slowly at first, his fingers maneuvered the stems in a tight but intricate braid. “Choose your flowers, and then start placing them together just like so.” The man added another as one ran short, tying the ends together with short knots and even ties. “Fortunes are a valuable trade.” Hyacinth remarked, impressed, though not at all sold on their potential accuracy. “The Pythia was once the most powerful person in the ancient world.”

She watched with attentive blue eyes, mirroring his actions. Her own were sloppy and the stems were not nearly as pliant for her own manipulations, but the shape formed nonetheless, forming a cord of the blooms that made her spark in a small, curved smile. Kasey looked over at the flowers in his hands, but still beamed at her handiwork. This had come from her own hands, she had made something. She tied the stems, and while they were destined to eventually tug free of their bindings, the witch held it up, and the blooms did not completely fall apart when she did so. Feeling bold for a moment, she leaned up on her toes, placing the crown onto Hyacinth’s head. “For you,” she said, before offering a laugh. “My fortunes are not that valuable, I think, but I like to listen to the stars. They tell us things, but no one ever stops to hear them.” Kasey paused, “Would you like to know what they say about you?”

No one had ever asked her on a date before? Winter’s brow furrows, she’s skeptical such a thing is true but that entire train of thought is literally tossed out a window in favor of the fact that Kasey was asking her if she wanted to start the date now. She thinks her face is redder than it’s ever been and she finds herself looking from their hands to the other woman’s face frantically. “Here? Right now?” She’s not dressed for such an occasion, sure the set she’d worn just to run some errands was cute, it houses a bikini under it just in case the mood to go to the beach strikes but it wasn’t quite-

No, it was perfect. They’d met under such pleasant, unexpected circumstances, why should their first date be any different? Drawing a breath, Winter can’t help but smile and nod, her hand coming up to close over her fellow blonde’s. “Okay, yeah. We could get some snacks and head to the beach? Unless you’re sick of it at this point.”

Kasey nodded, and the up and down motion made her ceramic earrings bob, the dangling feet from a maneki neko cat rattled on one side of her head and on the other a skeleton’s bones shook. She was never properly dressed for anything, her socks were pulled up high and were different colours, her shorts were a shade of fluorescent that likely glowed in the dark. “Yeah, right now.” Nothing else really mattered, just the company: and Winter’s was one that would swallow up all the details, she didn’t have to bother with anything fussy like an outfit or how her hair looked. (A little patchy from her at home dye-job, but otherwise, perfectly acceptable and pink.)

“I love the beach,” she returned, reaching for a bag of chips from one of the aisles. “I think I could spent just about forever there, turning into a creature from the ocean.” Kasey’s smile curved as she held a package of cookies in the other witches’ direction trying to see if she approved of the selection of snacks, “Swallowing down saltwater like gatorade and spitting out all the briny bits, isn’t that how dolphins do it?”

“Always goes that way doesn’t it. Zeus over there took all my money last weekend.” The witch said as he pointed to one colorfully lit slot machine titled the power of Zeus. The bonus round there was his favourite though he figured out very quickly that you either won a lot on it or you burned through everything in your pocket in a matter of ten minutes. “I’m not having much luck today though.” His own wallet was feeling the weight of his failure, but he still had a few euros left. Maybe that would change. Arvid plugged another bill into the machine and hit the middle-bet. “If I win big I owe my brother an arm and a leg.” The witch smiled at his own joke, though this person wouldn’t get it. He tossed her a smile, “I’m Arvid, by the way.”

“You’d think Zeus has enough, but no, he’s as greedy as a piglet and needs to take my life savings too. There’s a story I once heard about a bumblebee who wanted to have all the pollen in a flower garden,” she leaned against the machine, speaking mostly now with her hands. “He went from one bloom to the next getting bloated and covered in yellow, and you know— it’s not very much at first, just a dusting on those fuzzy little legs, but everything accumulates and he gets heavier and heavier from all that pollen that sticks to him until eventually those tiny wings of his can barely keep him up and he plummeted down, earth-bound. That’s how the first beetle came to be, a miserable greedy little bee.” Kasey tapped at her lower lip before she offered the stranger a wide grin. “Maybe Zeus’ll do the same, and come crashing into Corinth with the weight of all of our spare change.” Her brows knit for a moment as she tried to consider if Arvid was a particularly common name— Julian had mentioned his coworker at the funeral home that he was starting to see with the very same name, before tossing out her own. “I’m Kasey. Do you know a boy with pink hair? Same shade as mine, we did it together.” The witch paused, “His might be brighter though, he’s better at following care instructions.”

“Some of them were melons.” It’s become an inside joke with himself, he smiles as he pulls the needle away and wipes at her leg with the paper towel he’s set aside. It’s a return to normalcy, seeing her like this, hearing her speak the way she does. It’d been there before when she’d been clothed in what he had thought of as her ‘ordinary person cosplay’. But it’d been sadder, like a poet on the brink of death. After what Arvid had told him, he couldn’t help but wonder if she’d been there, her actual soul was tampered with. There is little use dwelling on the past, Kasey is bright and bubbly as ever and the ink on her skin looks pretty damn good. Straightening up, Julian rolls his shoulders back and lets out a huff of breath for posterity. “I’m good, I think. I hardly got nervous this time.” Though his eyes do keep looking for flaws in the small design. “You met a phoenix, didn’t you? To make you feel better.”

“Melon skin is nothing like oranges, no wonder you’re not very gentle. Should have tattooed a peach I think.” She was animated now, “Sometimes I think that if I was any fruit at all it would be one of those funny ones that you see at the store now. We have grapes at work that look just like regular grapes, but when you eat them, they taste like cotton candy. No magic at all, they’re just like that.” Kasey had naturally bought two pounds of them and had gorged on the fruit over the course of an entire weekend, so fascinated with the treat that she had seemingly forgotten that any other kind of food existed. “I’ll get you some next time. You’ll like them a lot.” She looked down at the tattoo, at the stars and the planets that she had not quite asked for but hadn’t of been in the mindset to disapprove of when Julian had proposed it, before passing off a smile. It was pretty, and it suited her more than she knew. “The next one I want is the constellation Vulpecula.” His words made the witch pause, nodding. “Her name is Rowan, we’re friends. She said that there was something wrong with me, but she fixed it.”

“How are you feeling?” She looks so much better than she had that night in the guest room. They’re back there now and he’s finishing up what he started that night, the little moon on her ankle has just been shaded and he’s cleaning it up. It’d been the strangest thing to witness her like that, all color drained from her already pale skin, her clothes rather uninspired. And then maybe a week or so later, she was back to her bubbly self, as if nothing had ever happened. Her soul had been restored, that’s what Arvid had said, she’d been preyed upon by a cubi and a phoenix had helped her. @kaseywsinclair​

How was she feeling- Kasey considered the question with her usual wide eyed wisdom, before offering as concise of an answer as she could. “Like a honey bee who just found a pool of syrup water after every flower in the world has closed up.” Her smile tugged crookedly at her features, crinkling up the corners of her eyes. “I’m very, very happy. Like I’m all full up again, when before I was missing something.” It was the best way that she could figure to describe how she had felt over the last little while: empty. She took care not to wiggle too much, but her nose pinched as Julian worked. “How are you feeling? This doesn’t feel very nice you know, I feel sorry for all those oranges now.”

“You’re okay.” She’s so relieved that it almost doesn’t register to her that Kasey is holding her hand. Winter finds herself scanning the other witch, eyes taking in the bright pastels and she looks far better than she had that night. She is full of stardust, it’s all inside her, it’s not around them in the water of the bay like it had been. It takes her a second to acknowledge what Kasey has said and once she puts two and two together, she goes pinker than the ends of the other woman’s hair. “Oh I-, I would love that. I mean that’s what I said that night right?” It all tumbles from her mouth very fast and both of her hands come up to clutch at Kasey’s. It is not smooth, it is not cool, she is awestruck in the moment and she fears that if she keeps talking, she will ruin this and so she closes her mouth and she simply nods. She nods and then she takes a deep breath and she thinks of Zara’s advice. “Would you go on a date? Like a date with me?” It’s a tentative question and Winter thinks she’s practically batting her lashes and it is too much and she has made a fool of herself and something in her stomach sinks. “To get drinks maybe? Unless that sounds boring.”

Kasey nodded, passing off a bright expression. “I’m okay.” She gripped at her tea, taking a sip of it. It was sweet, peach flavoured and for a moment she wondered what Winter’s gloss tasted like— if it would be just as saccharine. The other witch was bubbling words and it was a sort of nervousness that Kasey herself was accustomed to, enough to make her draw her thumb over the other woman’s hand, as if to apologize for the rings on her fingers that made her grip so cold. She would have liked to feign some cool resolve, but the word date made her feel stopped in her tracks, a little breathless at the implication. “No one’s ever asked me to go on one before,” she admitted, and a lull of awe curved around the syllables. Her hands gave Winter’s a squeeze and Kasey nodded enthusiastically. “Let’s go. Want to go now? I can go now.”
