The way Egyptologist treat dead bodiesâŚ.like you could be a king and your body still isnât respected. Itâs just a gross reminder that black and brown bodies and our cultures are still not respected. I really do hate it. Itâs not even about âspooky cursesâ, itâs about these folks customs being vehemently against their bodies being exposed or their items removed from their coffins.Â
Please respect the fucking dead. Stop unearthing and opening Pharaohs coffins. Like literally the whole point was for them to go to the afterlife with their belongings IN their coffins.Â
We may not want to acknowledge it, but that is racism. Your disrespect of a cultures thatâs not yours, an African culture, is heavily racist. Considering Egyptology and the entire field of freaking archeology is racist af, this isnât surprising. But like, really.Â
This is such a blatant misrepresentation of what archaeology (and Egyptology) is and how it works. Your post would have made sense if the Current Year was situated in the earlier half of the last century, but it is not. First of all, excavations currently being conducted in Egypt are mandated and supervised by the Egyptian government. No foreign team can just come in and yoink a mummy out and yeet it to some British museum. If you, as a team from a university outside of Egypt, want to dig anything at all in the country, you need to recieve a permit from the Egyptian government, and those permits arenât just handed out willy nilly.
Second of all, mummies arenât usually the thing thatâs displayed in museums, its their sarcophagos. It is extremely difficult to display Egyptian mummified individuals in museums because of the special conditions the body requires to not decompose. There are exceptions of course, but public mummy displaying remains uncommon.Â
Thirdly, Egyptian mummies arenât exclusively the only graves being dug. Graves are dug all over the world, a good chunk of them in Europe (e.g., an absolute fuckton of Scandinavian burials) and Eastern Europe (e.g., an absolute fuckjillion of Pazyryk/Scythian kurgans). This isnât something exclusive to Northern Africa and the Levant.Â
And finally, grave sites make up a fraction of all archaeological excavations. Most archaeologists have never seen a skeleton up close on-site, much less stepped into an actual burial site. Archaeologists usually find ancient trash and architecture (if youâre lucky), and the same goes for Egyptologists. There isnât an active seeking out of burial sites or graves, it actually really sucks to find those (in countries where archaeological work is regulated, i.e most of the developed world) because then a mountain of bureaucracy needs to be done and special permits need to be issued to unearth them, which btw, takes forever, and it halts the excavation process (which is already timed in advance by either the government or university; you canât just dig forever), a process which is meant to enrich our knowledge of the past, not to find someones bones and put them on display.Â
I highly suggest stepping into an archaeological excavation or talking to actual archaeologists/Egyptologists before making such wild and inaccurate accusations.Â
I will just copy and paste what I said in my original addition:Â
No amount of âthey have permissionâ negates the fact that these people did not want to be dug up, and that it is highly disrespectful and dismissive of their culture to do so- And this isnât newâThere are many cultures who donât like their burial grounds being disturbed. You have permission? To unearth a body of a culture who doesnât want to be dug up by a government that doesnât even currently practice what Ancient Egyptians practiced? And that makes it okay? No amount of permission changes the fact that you are actively disrespecting what this culture believed and their burial customs by digging them up. They have absolutely no voice for themselves. Permission isnât always ethical, nor right, especially when thereâs no current representative to the culture. Iâm glad you have permission to unearth the graves of people who did not want to be unearthed and place a high value on the afterlife. The fact that this happens, and that their objects are removed for display practically proved that you do not give a damn about them or their culture. I am not interested in the âethicsâ or âpermissionsâ or how the field has changed, when youâre still disrespecting a culture, and refusing to see the racism in these actions.
Would you like your remains to be dug up when your customs say otherwise? Would you like it if a government that didnât even practice your religion gave you the say so? Especially considering now a days there are alternatives to digging up peopleâs graves.Â
No amount of permission excuses the fact that you are disrespecting a culture by unearthing it and removing parts from a grave, when said culture made it clear they didnât want this to happen. At least when talking about the graves of the majority of Egyptian kings and royalty.Â
This is an ongoing conversation in archaeology and anthropology circles, especially regarding indigenous affairs: archaeology in itself is racist, colonial, and disrespectful to the dead AND the living.
Itâs tough, because archaeological roots are set in such historical contexts that are still engrained today, and the dead should be left alone. But, with burials in particular, they can be extremely rich in cultural and historical information, with richer burials providing more information on local trade, commerce, societal structure, etc. Such information being received while maintaining ethical responsibility to respect the dead and their living descendants is certainly possible without excavation.
Current Archaeology ethics dictate that either local/regional governments (the above example being the Egyptian government) and/or bodies descended from the group in question be involved in every step of a project, including whether excavation even occurs. Refusal to allow excavation is particularly common in Indigenous archaeology because excavation can be so destructive.
Egyptology in particular is an extremely white circle still. There has been ongoing debate that Egyptology should only be carried out by Egyptian archaeologists, and that African archaeology in general must be reclaimed from colonial domination. But, a lot of archaeological circles are still missing the point that excavation is still destructive and disrespectful to the dead. Is the trade-off of ethical violation worth it for such information?
Excavation should be the last resort for gathering historical and cultural information. There are equally enriching methods to getting such information. The problem is, excavation is flashy and grabs attention of the people and the media more than an ethnographic study. It also brings in more tourists, and by extension, boosts local and national economies. So, many governments allow continuous excavations to generate tourism buzz.
They completely disregard their ethical responsibility to the dead (their own people) to exploit them for profit.

life doesnât end at 25. life doesnât end at 27 or 30 either. life doesnât end at 35 or 45. life doesnât end at 65. it doesnât matter how old you are, when you decide to get your high school degree or start a family. it doesnât matter when you decide to go run a marathon or go travel the world. life is not made up by numbers, age is, and your age is not all that you are. you got time. life doesnât end until it ends.

Never normalize Nazis.
I hate _% of people statistics being used like âoh itâs such a small numberâ cause 1% is a small number but 1% of 7 billion is 70 million. Thatâs more than the population of the UK, France or Italy.
6% of the US is 19 million, as stated above. There are only 3 states that have over 19 million people in them. 19 million is the population of the entire state of New York. Thatâs more than half the population of California.
Taking populations and turning them into percentages is okay until you try to say âoh thatâs not a lot of peopleâ but the reality is⌠Thatâs millions. Thatâs enough to be its own country. Thatâs fucking scary.
Like donât get me wrong, thatâs nicer than the idea that Americans are split pretty 50/50 on such issuesâŚ. but thatâs still 3 neo-Nazis for every Jew in the country.  6% is a nice, softened way of saying âover 1 in 20 peopleâ.
3 neo-Nazis for every Jew in the country.Â
3 neo-Nazis for every Jew in the country.Â
3 neo-Nazis for every Jew in the country.Â
Let that sink in. Then think about how your Jewish friends and neighbors feel right now, and have been feeling all this time.

Everyday Magic đťâ¨
Witchcraft comes in all shapes and sizes, and so do us witches. We canât all always afford the same items, time, energy, spaces to practice larger bouts of magic, and that can leave us feeling a little lost or sad that we havenât practiced or performed anything.
But, donât fear, little birds, because I have a whole list of different types of tiny magic practices and thereâs definitely something here for everyone! Whether you donât have many spoons or canât scrape much cash together, thereâs every day magic for you.
Kitchen Craft:
Sprinkle some dried herbs into your smoothies, pasta sauces, or dips to invoke their correspondences and intents
Stir clockwise to manifest intentions or anticlockwise to banish/let go of thoughts
Drink different herbal teas for different intents, like ginger tea for clarity and grounding
Coloured utensils! Keep different coloured pots, cups, or spoons to use in baking. Pink cups for love drinks, green spoons for money magic, and so on
Keep store bought dried herbs for spells if you struggle with/cannot have real plants
Draw sigils with the sauces you apply to your food
Make your own breads and sauces and turn the recipes into different spells
Home Craft:
Sprinkle a herb onto the floor and leave to sit for a few minutes before you vacuum to bless your home with that intent
Let a black candle burn by the front door to cleanse off negative energies which may have come through it
Light basil incense around the house for new beginnings and cleansing
Keep a money jar, and each time you add to it, make a wish for future prosperity. When you break it, spend the money you need to or give it away to the less fortune/charities to spread the fortune it brought you
Make essential oil sprays to spruce up a room with your intent easily, but be sure to do your research (hereâs two to start you off)
Play calming playlists to re-energise your home, I personally like to use forest sounds
Hang herb bundles on doors to invite their intents in, like a bundle of basil and lavender for prosperous and positive new beginnings
Set out diffusers and match the number of sticks to an angel number you wish to invoke, such as four for support and family
Bathroom Craft:
Soaps and shampoos with scents/ingredients/colours matching what you wish to invoke
Add petals or herbs to your bath to bless yourself in their intents
Sing chants, songs and poems in the shower about how you want your day to go
Carve sigils and runes into your bars of soaps
Draw sigils into the smoked up glass and mirrors
Keep a white flannel for cleaning the bathroom, and could even put herbs or magic water onto whilst doing so
Sleep Craft:
You can put any manner of things under your pillow to invoke their intents, from sigils to leaves to crystals to money
Read a story before bed similar to what you want to manifest into your own life, such as a love story or a poem about being courageous
Sleep with a playlist with calms you to ease yourself into rest when youâre struggling
Say goodnight to your guides or ancestors!
If possible and healthy, wake up to an alarm at an angel number to âfitâ your day to that energy, for instance, if you have to get up at 6am, try 5:55 instead
Travel Craft:
Pack yourself a mini witch kit if you donât have access to your things. You can include mini herb hard, micro crystals, a small pen and paper, string, and a small birthday candle, for instance
Talk to your guides and beings in this time in your mind to wish them well and ask them for advice or to accompany you if you wish
Take a moment to listen to the natural bustling world around you between having your headphones on
Say any prayers you wish to give in your mind at this time
Trace sigils on the windows or surfaces around you
Write sigils into your shoes for safe travel and unsore feet
Wear crystal pendants associated with safe travel
You can learn on the go! Whether itâs books, blogs, or podcasts, this would be a good time to dedicate to learning new craft
Work Craft:
A desk plant is still a plant, and you can use it as a spell of growth in your career
Bring lunch with you that youâve magically prepared at home (kitchen magic above!)
If youâre someone who doodles as they work, but you donât want to be told off or caught, keep an empty pen for drawing out invisible sigils (but make sure itâs really empty)
Keep spell sachets for success at the bottom of your work bag
Garden/Nature Craft:
Collecting ethically and sustainably can take a lot of research, so when youâre unsure, simply use the âdiscardsâ rule. Take only what you see is discarded by nature, such as broken off stems or fallen wilted flower heads, sticks from the ground, or leaves also. Be sure you know if theyâre safe to use, touch, or eat though
In your own garden, plant all year round and native plants if you donât have much time for upkeep
Use food waste as compost for your plants! This is an easy way to recycle otherwise landfilled food waste whilst also giving your plants a nutritional meal for them. Take a read here about composting.
Keep window boxes for your plants if space is an issue, or even a vertical plant holder
Strolling/being in nature, parks, and gardens is a brilliantly way to recharge you and your tools
Art Craft:
Paint your dreams and what you wish to manifest
Sing songs about your desires and wishes
Work with colours reflecting the intentions you wish to invoke
Before using a canvas, lightly wash it down in magic water with any herbs or spices which reflect your intent for the piece youâre making
Weave your crystals into pendulums and jewellery to bond with them
Sew sigils into the inside of your clothing or bags
Sew a dried herb pouch into the inside of a bag or coat to bless it with these things (but be sure to do so properly and not let it get wet to avoid mould)
Write letters and poems to the universe thanking it or asking for blessings
Divination Craft:
A pendulum can be made out of anything and string. Whilst crystals and pure metals and such are nice, donât overlook a metal key or a beach stone
You can make your own deck, tarot or oracle, and it can be as detailed or not detailed as you like
Homemade runes can be made in an oven! Hunt around for peopleâs various different methods of home cast runes
Your own body can be a pendulum if you concentrate on the question and allow your sway to take you
If youâre a scryer, you donât need a crystal ball, a regular mirror can work with your technique, but always do your research on the method nonetheless
Keeping PDFs on meanings is 100% valid, okay, and actually a really wise thing to do! They can help look at your spreads in a way you didnât initially see
You can pull a card a day without having a set question
Sunlight and moonlight can charge your decks
Selenite is known to be a good charger for any and all tools
i wont talk too much about texas but just cuz i havent seen any posts saying this:
do not bring a barbecue or charcoal burner inside to cook/heat the place. you will die. people die from it every year. just layer and stay away from outdoor walls and windows as best as you can
realized i should maybe elaborate just a tad.
bringing a barbecue or charcoal burner inside will likely result in carbon monoxide poisoning, especially if youâre using them as heaters. thereâs a reason why both of those objects are intended to be used in open spaces with good air flow. using them inside - likely in a room with the doors and windows closed - will fill the room up with carbon monoxide, which is a scentless, invisible gas. unlike âtypicalâ gas leaks, you wonât be able to identity it based on a nasty smell or colour, and if youâve never experiences the early stages of CO poisoning, you probably wonât be able to identity the symptoms off the top of your head (headache, confusion, dizziness, etc).
every time thereâs a large snow storm where i live, reports come days later that people have died from CO after bringing BBQs inside. ik itâs tempting, esp when itâs so cold, but you really have to leave them outside.
We should not dismiss the debates around Rowlingâs tweets as merely a distraction from the important anti-racist work at hand. In fact, Rowlingâs transphobic statements are embedded in the history of white supremacy. As many people are engaging in conversations about how white supremacy has shaped so many of our political and social institutions, there is no better time than the present to talk about how âbiological sexâ and âsexual differenceâ were created over time to protect, promote, and police the boundaries of whiteness.
Rowlingâs statements are also embedded in a history of anti-lesbianism. Â Anti-lesbianism and anti-Black racism have a shared history: the white supremacist history of âbiological sex.â Â Although Rowling claims the existence of transgender people somehow âerasesâ women and lesbians and although Rowling feels she is somehow supporting lesbian political claims, Rowlingâs statements reiterate all sorts of historically racist/anti-lesbian tropes. Further, it is actually Rowling and other so-called âgender-critical feministsâ who are erasing lesbians and lesbian history. Rowling ignores the long history of lesbian opposition, particularly Black lesbian feminist opposition by those in Combahee River Collective, to biological ideas about sex. Thus, Rowlingâs defense of biological sex in the name of lesbians redoubles the valorization of whiteness by neglecting Black lesbian feminist histories.

European doctors and scientists viewed Black womenâs physiologies as a sign of sexual excess and aberration. The early development of European theories about Black womenâs âbiological sexâ had lasting impact. Numerous scientists and medical doctors used interpretations of âHottentotâ bodies to develop a wide range of theories about sexuality and sexual pathology. One example is that late 19th-century sexologists first articulated lesbianism as a sexually degenerate pathology. Lesbianism was conceived as a defect in achieving the sexual dimorphism proper to white folks. In sexology, gynecology, and evolutionary biology, European lesbians and Black women were said to share the same evolutionary physiology. In other words, white European lesbians had either âdevolvedâ down the evolutionary ladder to be Black or had never achieved the proper phylogenetic state as their proper heterosexual European sisters. Sexologists believed that if one examined a white lesbianâs labia or clitoris, one would find the atavistic traits of the âHottentot.â
The scientific racism of sexologists also informed the rise of modern-day police forces, which evolved not only from American slave patrols, but from late 19th century French municipal regulations that policed sex and prostitution in an effort to control outbreaks of syphilis. Criminologists theorized that âthe prostitute,â like the lesbian, was a predatory personage with a degenerate racial-sexual physiology that matched âHottentotâ bodies. Previous to these municipal regulations, sex work was only an occasional or seasonal act for many agrarian women. However, when French law and medical science declared that the prostitute was a distinct individual that needed to be regulated, agrarian women who periodically visited port cities to engage in sexual commerce were subsequently forbidden from traveling back to their homes and had to remain hostage as âprostitutesââby order of the policeâin order to undergo regular medical checks for syphilitic decay and to work as police informants. Â
Left untreated, syphilis is a slow-acting bacterial infection where the body, over time, begins to show sores and lesions and where bodily features deteriorate. Syphilis can also have debilitating neurological effects. Thus, for European sexologists, syphilis was not only a cause of physical degeneracy, it was the sign of a deeper inherited degeneracy. As the prostitute with syphilis aged, it was thought that the âmannish,â atavistic traits of her Black/lesbian primitivity were appearing over time. In other words, as the prostitute aged, she became less sexually dimorphic and devolved into a state of follyâa reveal of her true nature. By corollary, syphilis was not the only disease that the prostitute could pass along to her sexual partner: like the lesbian, she could morally corrupt her sexual partner and turn them into a sexual degenerate or invert. Accordingly, the lesbian and the prostitute had to be policed.
As one can see, a wide variety of medical, biological, and social scientists explicitly asserted that the aberrant and dangerous sexual excesses of Black women, lesbians, and prostitutes were physiologically linked. Further, scientists speculated that lesbians and prostitutes had a natural inclination to hide their inferior or abnormal anatomic features in order to hide their deeper criminal natures. Several French physicians asserted that Baartman and other  Black women had developed large butts as a failed adaptation in order to hide their âprimitiveâ pelvises and to âmimicâ white womenâs child-bearing hips in order to attract a mate. Analogously, these same physicians claimed that lesbians and prostitutes âhideâ their atavistic traits with makeup and lavish feminine clothing to cover over their âmannishnessâ for the purpose of luring mates into sexual corruption. Lesbians, prostitutes, and Black women were, by virtue of their âbiological sex,â dangerous individuals who hid their true natures so that they could recruit nice white boys and girls into degeneracy. With this history, one can now see how todayâs transphobes refashion Victorian racial science and fear of whatâs hiding under people clothes for the contemporary age with âbathroom billsâ and the aggressive policing of transgender sex workers in order to âprotectâ women and children.
This is really important
The greatest trick the right ever pulled was convincing queer people that other queer people are the enemy
The split attraction model is not the cause of internalized homophobia. Transphobes are not transphobes because of neopronuns. Lesbians are not harassed because bi women exist. Homophobes are not homophobes because people identify as âqueerâ instead of âgayâ or âLGBT.â
hey so since apparently enough people watched it to get it nominated for a golden globe
do not watch the movie "Music" by Sia
it is a disgusting portrayal of autism that should not be monetarily supported. do not give sia money for this film. she doesn't deserve to be rewarded for using autistic people as a plot device to further her own monetary gain. instead, please consider donating to autistic causes. this post has several links that lead to autistic-led charities where you can donate if you're able.
listen to and stand with autistic people. do not support this project.
reminder:
tarot cards have set meanings, yes, but each deck has different depictions that change the meaning slightly (colors, images, directions, etc. can change the way it is interpreted), and your intuition should influence the reading. your first interpretation of the cards is what your gut is telling you. trust it. there are many ways to interpret any set of cards you draw, so listen to that little voice in your head. it knows best.
Thatâs why I always go through a new deck, look at each card, and write down what thoughts this card evokes in my mind. I also prefer decks where the Minor Arcana are artsy as well because of this reason.
10 direct actions from the quarantine
A lot of great people are organizing mutual aid for those in quarantine right now. There is a great guide on how to do that as safely as possible: https://itsgoingdown.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/COVID-SupplyDistro-MASafetyPracticesZine-WEB.pdf
But what if you are the one in the quarantine? What can you do that actually has an impact? Hereâs some ideas in no particular order.
Write to prisoners: https://queeranarchism.tumblr.com/post/174973174003/queeranarchism-queeranarchism
Call/text/e-mail people who need it. This can be your grandmother, your comrades, that co-worker who is in a bad marriage, people who you know are isolated and dealing with depression, etc. Taking care of people is always direct action.
Organize online group activities for your community. This can be serious content like a mental health support group if you have the skills to facilitate such a thing, but it can also be a synchronized movie-screening  or a multiplayer game. (if you do not have experience facilitating support groups, please choose those lighter activities first, mental health support is a skill you need to learn before jumping right in and messing with vulnerable people).
Raise funds for mutual aid projects. Maybe there is something you can make and sell online? Maybe you make music and can do livestreams with a donate button? Maybe you can take art commissions? If the thing you sell is a physical product, check the guide above for advice on how to sterilize it.
Talk to your building about a rent strike. This may be difficult depending on whether your whole building is in quarantine and whether you can reach them digitally, but it may be an option for some. Be sure to do so carefully. You want legal backup and a solid community plan on how to resist eviction before your landlord finds out. https://itsgoingdown.org/a-dozen-vacant-homes-reclaimed-by-unhoused-tenants-in-la-as-calls-for-rent-strike-grow-across-us/
Prepare to feed yourself and your community. Grow food in your window/balcony if you can. Baby greens can be grown in a few weeks. Access to fresh food is essential if you want to keep yourself as healthy as possible. Growing herbal medicine is also an option. It takes more time, but now is as good a time to start as any.
Learn a skill that you can use for direct actions in the future. Anything from lock-picking to encryption to anarchist mental health. Now is a great time to prepare for your next direct action.
Share a skill. Now is a great time to set up an online instruction for that thing you are good at. Be sure to practice good cyber security. Donât use digital communication to pass on highly illegal skills. Do choose something practical. We do not need another damn theory podcast.
Update your cybersecurity. https://hackblossom.org/cybersecurity/
Take care of your physical and mental health as best you can. This may not seem like direct action but it is an essential part of it. We can only keep up the fight if we take care of ourselves. This list of tips for recovery from a stressful experience is also useful as a general mental-health starter kit: https://supportrecoveryteam.wordpress.com/tips-for-recovery/
IMPORTANT: do not pressure yourself to do all these things. In times of uncertainty is can be easy to fall into a workaholic state and push ourselves to our limits to âdo somethingâ. Thatâs a self-destructive impulse. Relax. Prioritize your well being. Pick something that you feel capable of doing and start there.
idk who needs to hear this but when your english teacher asks you to explain why an author chose to use a specific metaphor or literary device, itâs not because you wonât be able to function in real-world society without the essential knowledge of gatsbyâs green light or whatever, itâs because that process develops your abilities to parse a text for meaning and fill in gaps in information by yourself, and if youâre wondering what happens when you DONâT develop an adult level of reading comprehension, look no further than the dizzying array of examples right here on tumblr dot com
this post went from 600 to 2400 notes in the time it took me to write 3 emails. iâm already terrified for whatâs going to happen in there
k but also, as an addendum, the reason we study literary analysis is because everything an author writes has meaning, whether it was intentional or not, and their biases and agendas are often reflected in their choice of language and literary devices and so forth! and that ties directly into being able to identify, for example, the racist and antisemitic dogwhistles often employed by the right wing, or the subconscious word choices that can unintentionally illustrate someoneâs bias or blind spot. LANGUAGE HAS WEIGHT AND MEANING! the way we communicate is a reflection of our inner selves, and thatâs true regardless of whether itâs a short story or a novel or a blog post or a tweet. instead of taking a piece of writing at face value and stopping there, assuming that there is no deeper meaning or thought behind the words on the page, ask yourself these two questions instead:
1. what is the author trying to say? 2. what does the author maybe not realize theyâre saying?
because the most interesting reading of any piece of literature, imho, usually occupies the space in between those questions.
Hey controversial opinion apparently but the rights, safety and well-being of ace and aro people shouldnât be diminished down to simply âace discourseâÂ
so metropolitan museum of art has a register of books theyâve published that are out of print and that you can download for free! theyâre mostly books on art, archeology, architecture, fashion and history and i just think thatâs super useful and interesting so i wanted to share! you can find all of the books available here!
