Top 5 reasons to ship Bangel against Spuffy?
I’m not in the business of converting so I’ll just say my reason as to why I ship Bangel over Spuffy and it’s fairly simple, Angel is the love of Buffy’s life.
I mean it’s in the narrative, as long as they love each other as deeply as they do then they can’t be together because the curse is always at risk of being triggered.
Part of their bond is this cosmic, intangible connection
but it’s also based in substance. I remember going back-and-forth with a Spuffy shipper over the idea of whether or not Spuffy would happen in season 6 if Angel was around when she came back from heaven and found the argument that she would push him away to be ridiculous because throughout the series we see how even with the support of her friends, Buffy still put on a “I’m fine” persona and yet Angel managed to tap into her vulnerability and provide her with a safe space
Whereas with Spuffy, instead of Spike being able to provide a safe space for Buffy, enabling her to be vulnerable, the narrative had to put her through hell to make them happen.
Buffy had to have absolutely no one to rely on for Spuffy to become sexual, even if she could talk to Xander or Willow or if Joyce was alive Spuffy would not have happened, the point was that the only person Buffy could turn to was Spike because she was in heaven and her friends not only ripped her out of it for selfish gain but left her grave site so she had to claw out of her grave alone, that is seriously traumatic and her friends albeit unintentionally did that to her and Joyce was dead and Angel wasn’t around so all that was left was Spike.
Not to mention that Spike enjoys her and encourages her isolation
and it’s a relationship entwined with Buffy’s shame and guilt
Also the idea that Angel didn’t treat her like an equal while Spike did is something I also find ludicrous because not only do we see how Buffy and Angel work together
But Angel mentions that he’s actually learned from Buffy
It’s like because Angel didn’t degrade Buffy, antis say he didn’t treat her equally?
(Aside: Speaking of degradation did we all just forget that Spike made a Buffy sexbot?)
The idea that Bangel is immature whereas Spuffy is mature is also something I take issue with
because certainly, there are moments where Buffy is irrational when it comes to Angel because she was a teen
but the way both of them respond to their connection becomes more and more mature as the series goes on
but that doesn’t minimize the connection itself, it doesn’t minimize how much they love each other:
I just find that incomparable.
Spike encouraging the darker impulses in Buffy doesn’t automatically make his relationship with her more mature.
And of course, there’s the fact that Spike tried to rape Buffy.
When Angel lost his soul in season 2, he became an entirely different being, he became Angelus, Buffy even says it “You’re not Angel anymore” “a demon is wearing my boyfriend’s face”, there is a clear distinction between Angel and Angelus and Bangel is Buffy + Angel. There is no such distinction with Spike and Buffy.
I enjoy Spuffy in that it was a vehicle for Buffy’s darker mindset in season 6 and the way that manifested between them but as a ship? No.
