thinkin about disabled characters i gotta confess i find it fascinating when people make goodtimeswithscar a cane user actually. because it suggests the artist has given minecraft scar a disability, but a different disability than real life scar, right? or at least different symptoms. and i mean scar's very open about the fact you can do anything with his cubito so i wouldn't say it's a problem but its an interesting unspoken implication. is it a headcanon with intentionality or just an aesthetic choice. much to consider.

sometimes it gets anthropomorphized into a character or a divine figure or symbolized by something more tangible like a river or a car or a boat but it is a character in its own right and you should think of it this way

i know if your parents are from different countries you can inherit either nationality or both but wouldn't it be more fun if they drew a line between the spot one parent was born and the spot the other parent was born and you got the nationality of wherever the midpoint of that line is? just a thought to spice things up. like if you have one algerian parent and one egyptian parent then you get libyan nationality. it's awesome too because many people would get ocean nationality.

I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things

my coworker announces that he's off to the dentist. someone reacts with a tooth emoji. is this a statement of dentist solidarity? a wish for my coworker to return with more (or fewer?) teeth than he set out with? simple word association? who can say

the thing about being bullied for being weird as a kid is that even if you've always embraced being weird your brain is still always looking for the line where it's too much. you can be as proudly and intentionally weird as you want and you can love being weird but your mind is still convinced there's a point where you get too weird and people start treating you like a weird looking bug again. also it feels like you reach that point 500 times a day even if everyone you've spoken to today found you pleasant and likable and even if you're completely alone in your house with nobody looking at you at all.

on the topic of disabled characters, though, i think a LOT of artists give characters mobility aids that their character wouldn't actually benefit from using.

i'm sort of having a mild brain fog moment rn so i can't fully articulate what i'm on about, but i think a lot of able-bodied artists view things like canes and crutches as interchangeable. and they often don't know enough about the wide range of mobility aids to make an informed decision about what their character might actually use based on their disability

i also think that aids like walkers and rollators are sort of viewed as "cringe" on some level, and many people view them to be "just for old people," so many artists will opt for giving a character who has full-body pain and fatigue a cane (which, in many cases, can potentially WORSEN full-body pain) instead. and a lot of people don't realize that most wheelchair users are able to walk, so they don't consider it an option for characters with chronic pain

idk it's kind of frustrating. i've genuinely never, ever seen a character that uses a rollator before. not once. i cannot name a single one. i know of multiple ocs who are described to have full-body pain, dizziness, and fatigue that are drawn as cane users and are never shown with wheelchairs or walkers, though

it's also sort of sad? i've been diagnosed since i was twelve years old, and i only heard of rollators LAST YEAR. and that was only because i saw one irl and immediately asked what it was. i wonder how many disabled people out there don't even know it's an option solely because they're completely underrepresented online and in media

if you're a creative with a disabled oc, PLEASEEE check out this link. it's a very nice and detailed guide for telling which mobility aids suit someone's needs best. it's incredibly important to make the right choice for your character! mobility aids tell you a LOT about someone's lived experience. picking the right one will communicate to your audience #1 what your character goes through #2 that you UNDERSTAND what your character goes through!

For added context to this funny image above, this is not only a wink to pretty obvious nonbinary experience, but also a big roast for that toilet marking system because a lot of my peers can never remember which toilet is which because it's so, so unintuitive (especially when some toilets use man pictogram-woman pictogram-man so you encounter the shape monstrosity when you least expect it and have to guess again).

i love the found family trope. i love the way it intentionally deconstructs the idea of "family," breaking down the societal ideas of what that word means and what it means for people to be your family. i love the way it generally means "people who mean a lot to each other and stick by each other through thick and thin." i love the way it takes our traditional definition of family as people who are related to each other, which often comes with a whole host of fucked up relationships, and says, actually, no. family doesn't mean blood. family means love. family means choice. family means loyalty. family means closeness, sharing, care. blood relations have nothing to do with it. i love the found family trope
