one adaptational choice I *did* enjoy was keeping Carruthers largely out of sight until he arrives all unaware for his Horrible Boat Time, and then doing the slow pan up from his very shiny shoes to his impeccable travelling clothes to his floppy hair. behold! we've hired Michael York and he's playing a posh idiot!

#the best part of the book *is* the stretch where Carruthers is reconciling himself to the fact that he's prepared for Posh Idiot Yachting #and has instead got Davies and his Horrible Boat #(they make the Dulcibella look pretty nice in the film but I think this is the boat equivalent of Hollywood Ugly)#rots

thoughts on the Riddle film: they didn't have to give us all that (Carruthers face down in the mud not once but twice; tender shirtless forehead sponging; the tiller scene), but also. they didn't have to give us all that :( (relentlessly heterosexual opening; baffling and ooc ending; Davies' moustache)
