Writing is Parenthood

1) The Big Idea=Conception (Forgive me if this is crude, but it’s generally considered fun and exciting.)

2) Plotting/First Draft= Pregnancy (Usually takes about nine months. Emotions range from proud to overwhelmed to hysterical. Gets harder as it goes on.)

3) Revision=Raising a child (You take this horribly deformed ‘baby’–the first draft– and morph and mold it into something that can stand on its own, and something you are infinitely proud of and attached to. Expect alternating fits of crippling self doubt and glowing pride.)

4) Final Draft=Off to college! (Now it’s time to step back and look at what you’ve created. It’s time to share it with the world, and you’re scared for it– will the world treat it well? It’s terrifying, but it’s time. With both fear and fulfillment, your ‘child’ is ready to go.)
