A course for students 20+ is now open for registration!
The School of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies (one of Beyond the Interface’s sponsors) has developed a low-barrier bridging course in sexuality studies at York University.
Being a scholar is a life-long dream for some. However, the neo-colonial and systemically discriminatory nature of academic institutions makes this dream appear just that.
This course combats that. The 13-week course is $150 and is an opportunity for sex workers or those interested in alternative sexualities to enter the university.
Academic-led programs and initiatives like the Beyond the Interface conference are significant because they dismantle existing barriers and let people explore previously unavailable opportunities.

Sex workers are some of the most marginalized people worldwide. Current technologies have brought new and expanding elements to the sex work industry. Yet, there is little information on critical issues surrounding sex work and sex tech.
#beyondtheinterface responds to this knowledge gap. It consolidates existing data and generates new knowledge that can develop strategies advocating for legislative inclusion, access to justice, and the legal rights of sex workers and non-sex workers alike.
We invite scholars, activists, students, and members of the sex work and sextech communities to join us in examining this underexplored area of human rights research. Our conference is designed with a Participatory Learning Approach (PLA) to draw on multiple perspectives and viewpoints.
Taking place from October 17-19, 2024, and hosted through the Centre for Feminist Research (York University), #beyondtheinterface will engage in meaningful discussions, exchange knowledge, and foster dialogue and understanding.
In exploring the experiences of sex workers and their unique livelihoods, this conference generates new paths forward to better protect and promote the rights of sex workers.

About the Project: Erobotic Futures is a unique study which will examine the socio-economic impacts of AI erobotics, virtual reality (VR), and global sextech, on human sex industries in Canada. This study will lay the groundwork to open feminist discussions about the regulatory frameworks of commodified sex while supporting alternative sexualities; digisexual intimacy and pleasure; human, sexual and labour rights; commerce and the economy; technology; health and safety; privacy and security.

About the Researcher: Kathleen Cherrington is a fourth-year PhD student in Gender, Feminist, and Women's Studies at York University. With 15 years of community-based outreach experience, she focuses on marginalized communities, including chronically homeless individuals struggling with mental health and addictions, HIV+ prisoners, and sex workers. Her research explores critical trafficking and sex work studies, sexual rights, and feminist sex tech theories. Passionate about sexuality studies, sex-positive feminism, and the societal impacts of sex tech, she investigates the ethical, legal, and socioeconomic implications. She is committed to bridging academia with real-world issues and strives for inclusive societal change through engaged scholarship and knowledge mobilization.
