Experimental Life drawing -
These are some of the slightly less successful pieces. I haven’t included all of my work from this session as I’m not happy with a lot of it, but I partly like elements of these drawings. Even though I do not always like how my work looks in the end I find the process of experimental life drawing really useful as it allows me to practise drawing from life but also have an element of stylistic control and how I can incorporate them together.
Authorial - Collecting Data -
I originally wanted to make the dolls all bespoke and made specifically for one person. To collect the data to be able to gain an idea of what a person’s doll would look like, I created a list of questions or prompts as listed above. I then asked a few different people to complete them on a small sheet of paper and recorded the outcome in my sketchbook. I wanted to encourage the people to being creating visual elements associated with themselves which I could translate onto the form of a doll. I found it surprisingly difficult to think of questions or prompts to aid them with their drawings but I think overall it was rather successful. I asked them different things like for their favourite colour or animal as well as visually showing memories they had, anything which I could use to add to the doll. Later on in the project I found that this idea conflicted with the idea of it being in packaging and sellable, so I later changed it to a set few dolls. However I do like this concept very much still and it may be something I revisit in the future.
Authorial - Artist Research -
I find it really useful to look into other Artist who do similar things to what I want to do, to see what has already been made as well as ideas for how to make my work better as well. At first I looked into Artist’s whose work is quite naive and cute in a childish way, then looking into dolls in general and then finding various different artist’s who make dolls, who I also researched into, noting down the various things that I liked about their work.
Authorial Final Outcome -
I think that my final outcome has been quite successful, because I was exploring the concept of childhood as a whole I found it difficult to specify what area I wanted to look into within this, meaning that it took longer for me to realise what I was doing as my final outcome. I think I have learnt from this and in the future I will try to make the brief more rigid, meaning that hopefully I will know what I want to do earlier on in the project. Despite this issue, I am happy with how my work has turned out. I feel that the making aspect of the work is slightly stronger than my concept though as I was still in the process of fully realising it. The main concept is that these are plain dolls which adults would buy, they would then buy different ‘packs’ for different purposes, for example if they were studying for their degree they would buy the degree pack, if you were in ill health, you would buy the health set. The doll reflects the self you want to be and acts as a reminder of that for you to work towards those goals. I took ideas from various dolls in different cultures, for example voodoo uses varying coloured pins which all mean different things, to then affect the doll and in turn the person. Daruma dolls, found in Japan, act as a reminder in a similar way as my dolls. You buy them without eyes and you draw in one eye and then think of your goal and keep it on your desk as a reminder of that goal, once it is completed you colour in the other eye, the doll then being a reminder that you achieved a goal.
I wanted them to act as a positive mascot in your life, mascots are something which are very popular in Japan and seen in almost every company. I wanted to embody this idea into real life for actual people. As people pick sets and dolls no two dolls would be the same, emphasising just how different everyone is. I liked the size of them being really big too, as while you would imagine it would be smaller as they are just a small reminder as adults, I wanted them to be unlosable. I think this idea also plays up to commercial infantilisation trends, allowing adults to have dolls, similar to the onesies and colouring books which are becoming popular.
Authorial - idea experimentation - Russian Dolls
I combined the idea of growing up with the form of a Russian doll, as they are smaller getting bigger, looking as if they are various stages of aging. I wanted to try to communicate a subtle idea about colours fading with adulthood, whereas the younger dolls are wearing brighter more colourful clothing, the older ones gradually get darker. I really like this form of the Russian doll too as you put the dolls inside of each other, which could be seen as you never losing the child and it remains within, as do all the other stages of your life, even though the exterior may only show the most recent. While I do feel that this idea is successful, I feel that it is just a experimentation that I wanted to do to see if it would form more ideas, but it isn’t enough for a final piece.

Dissertation Planning - Reflection -
I am finding it rather difficult to pinpoint what it is that I want to find out with my dissertation. I know I want to look into the concept of childhood but I need to figure out what about it I want to find out. I am interested in the parameters of childhood, what defines a child and an adult, as well as how this differs throughout time and geographically. I am also interested in the identity that goes along with it, focusing on objects and how they chagne as we grow up. Not only objects but visual identity too. So possibly the components as a whole that define childhood. What are the boundaries that define a child? Though throughout history children used to be seen as miniature adults, wearing the same clothes etc, the culture of childhood has now developed more than it ever has before - with the objects reflecting that. I am also interested in looking into the rejection of growing up - possibly the Peter Pan phenomenon - especially in Japan, where the visual identity - people tend to prefer is younger. Also I want to include how this is mainly something done with millennial as they refuse to grow up in the same way their parents did.

Authorial Project - collecting information
I have spent some time collecting information through the form of an interview. I chose this as I want to hear people’s individual stories and interviews are a personal way of collecting data. I asked them five questions:
What was your favourite object as a child?
What was your favourite thing to do?
Give me a memory of your childhood
Did you have any weird/unusual habits or likes as a child?
Did you have any misconceptions of the world?
I asked these questions as I wanted to start gaining visual ideas from others memories, so I wanted to find out what material objects had importance to them and then learn a bit about their personality and experiences too to gain a sense of that. I found the answers really interesting and enjoyed the experience overall.
Authorial Project - ideas
To begin with I have just been looking in general on pinterest for inspiration as to ideas for the project. I have a lot of different ideas so it is hard to pin point what it is exactly that I want to do. From looking at this page, I can see that I am very interested in colour and form, with quite a few of the images being of 3d work. I want to find an underlying idea within all of them to explore more with this project.
Authorial Project - Reflection
I’m not sure if this is something everyone does as a child, but when I was younger I had a lot of misconceptions about things. For example, I used to think that everyone was born an age and you would stay that age. As I once said to my grandma ‘I am so lucky to be born young’. I also was told that you would get cloud sickness if you sat by the window of a place & looked outside, meaning that on all flights my sister, who had told me this, would sit by the window.
For a long time I also didn’t understand the concept of writing, I used to think that you could just write a random string of letters and think what the meaning was in your head and others would somehow be able to understand this. While I have gotten better at understanding people, I still do get confused about things sometimes. I feel that this is something especially done in childhood. I find this kind of misinformation really interesting, as it can really shape the way you think, this kind of thing isn't seen as much in adults as we are often corrected at some point as to what is ‘correct’ and what is ‘incorrect’. I might try to find out what others used to think as children as inspiration. I also want to try to get into that creative mindset, as I feel that when we know less, we are less limited as to what is possible.
I want to look into what it is that defines being a child opposed to being an adult, if there is a specific age as to the you become an adult or does this differ people to person. Does it happen when you think a certain way or dress a certain way? All of these ideas are really interesting to me as I feel that, especially if -
