lilith was glad to be off work. she was glad to be able to go home and eat chinese food and ice cream and watch whatever dumb comedy was on the tv. however she wasn’t glad for the torrential downpour that had soaked her to the bone on the short walk from where she parked her car to her apartment building and she was fuming by the time she got inside. so much so that she didn’t bother to pay attention to the lobby itself, and went skidding as soon as the sole of her soaked sneaker hit the equally soaked floor, sending her sprawling into a puddle of water and all her stuff—a water bottle, her phone, a walkie-talkie and a stack of twenty or so pamphlets—flying.
“i swear to fucking god if this rain doesn’t let up i’m gonna move to fucking santa barbara or something.” she spewed, the tone in her voice filled with anger as she picked herself off the floor. “anywhere with less goddamn rain.”
The noise at the entrance of the lobby pierced through Katie’s bubble and startled her so much she jumped away in instinct, in case anything -- although she didn’t know what -- came flying at her. It took her but a few seconds to realize that nothing would come flying her way, and that instead, it appeared as though somebody had slipped on the floor and fallen. Katie hurried toward the person, although slowed down significantly at the thought that she, too, might fall victim to a wet floor and gravity. And the last thing Katie figured the woman needed was someone sliding full speed in her direction. “Hey, are you okay?” she asked, carefully stepping between items and pamphlets to get a better look at the woman, her first priority to see that there was no greater damage. “No broken bones or anything?”
