DEEPER STUDY2 NOVEMBER 01 2016
This week i tested my previous puppet. To walk, anchored one foot down with clamps while the other one was in motion. This proved to be very difficult!!!! His arms started at his sides and be basically had no shoulders so it was difficult to move them believably. I’ll have to remake the puppet for next week.
OCTOBER 26 2016 DEEPER STUDY
Amelia and I attempted to make a puppet in messy 3, so I kind of had an idea of what was to come for my deeper study. Amelia and I usually worked together in the process and making, but since she already had a story from another class, I decided to make something new. We will both continue to help each other animate. So, for my deeper study I wanted to make two characters, a human figure and a squid-like creature. I loved the theme of water and the fluidity things seem to have in it. I haven’t quite made up a story yet but I do have a few ideas and a lot of materials for when I get under that camera. I studied the video Martin showed us in class (Make a build up puppet-StopmoNick) as a guide to building my humanoid, but because this is a prototype and I have never handled latex, I also consulted the Emily Carr tech and he gave me some cool tips for building!
Here are the rough prototypes of my character. Now that I have a slight sense of how building goes I know I will be able to produce better ones for my film.
I then created my head and feed for the humanoid out of air dry clay. The head is made up of tissue, Saran Wrap, hockey tape and clay. The feet are just clay, in hopes that they will be heavy.
And these are what I hope my 3D puppets will represent!
OCTOBER 12 2016 MESSY 3 For this messy Amelia and I decided to take on the challenge and make a puppet. Since we had a previous theme of using organics, we made this puppet out of leaves and other organic matter, which proved to be difficult because the leaves ended up drying up and crackling all over the place. We tried to create a swim effect like our lettuce in a previous messy but found it much more difficult with such a more rigid model.
OCTOBER 5 2016MESSY 2
This week we made the sequel to SWIM, bringing in more elements and supplies. Between the growth of objects and criteria to work with, my partner Amelia Earhart and I hit a few walls and struggled to find ideas and inspiration. We found that the rules hindered our artistic freedom. We struggled but continued to work through our block and created something that we are proud of!
This work took approximately 9 hours to complete

MESSY 1
Amelia Earhart and I made a short film that explored the theme of transformation, and through various materials we formed together SWIM, a piece dedicated to a watery passing of time and space.
This piece was special to us because we have wanted to collaborate for so long and finally were able to combine our ideas. We shared this first stop motion experience together and felt like it effortlessly came together.
This project took approximately 7 hours to complete.

The Portrayal of an Experimental Process
For my project, I wanted to look into mixing collage animation with digital animation, using after effects and photoshop. I was thinking about making my collage backgrounds first, and scanning them and bringing them into after effects. I would create puppets out of cut up magazines and place them in the space (I have little to no knowledge about either program so it would be a bit of a learning curve). I would also like to create a layer on top with a 2D hand drawn character who would interact with the surrounding collage animations/backgrounds.
Inspiration:

I am particularly inspired by the surreal work Bill Domonkos. He creates animated GIFs that combine live footage, computer animation, film photography and manipulated film footage.
THE RECIPE
1 hefty pile of magazines to take inspiration/cut up
1 pair of scissors
1 stick of glue
Adobe after effects, Photoshop
First, I would create my backdrops and my puppets first, then bring them into after effects. I would organize that part of the animation first. Then, I would animate a 2D character in Photoshop ( I’m hoping I can drop my backgrounds in frame by frame and animate on another layer but I don’t really know how this stuff works yet but it does sound possible?
