Shout out to the married wlw couple sitting behind the Kurusu-Suwa family maybe gay people are real after all
If I had a nickel for everytime I got obsessed with an anime that has a blonde haired, self-deprecating MC who could most definitely kill you and their black haired bastard partner who likes to smoke
I'd have three nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened three times.
I wanted to do some buddy daddies fanart (and something festival related cause I've been listening to Matsuri by Fujii Kaze a lot)
I doubt Rei went to a festival when he was a kid so I imagined he goes to one with Kazuki and Miri for the first time
then buys all the candy he could get coz he has never eaten them before
A theory about the past
Warning: death
At the end of the 5th episode of Buddy Daddies we see Kyutaro talking with Kazuki and Rei, telling them to have no regrets if they decide to keep Miri. He also reminds them what betraying "The Organization" entails, focusing on Rei:
I was a bit surprised that he turned to Rei and not to Kazuki because, from the scene where he talks with Misaki, I would've suspected he was the one more prone to betray the organization. After all, Misaki tells him that "the ones with the loftiest ideals bring the greatest misfortunes to their families", which reminds Kazuki of the time his pregnant wife was killed.
This made me think that Rei might also have been somehow involved in the accident that killed Kazuki's wife and I found a bit of clues that lead me towards that direction. Before that, let's remember the info we have until now:
Kazuki's wife was killed in an explosion in front of him
She was holding an umbrella, which means that it was raining
Ryo Ogino was somehow involved in the accident
Now, I actually think the animators have been giving us small clues and frames, especially in the opening, that are all part of the same scene.
In the scene where Kazuki has a flashback about the explosion, we see a car and a truck parked next to one another:
Guess where we have seen that blue car?
Exactly! In the opening where we are watching Kazuki from behind, probably taking the pov of a bullet. Also because of the rain, this frame is probably part of the explosion scene. But there is another small clue that connects it to another frame: there are lights on the trees and in front of the shops (maybe Christmas lights?). Where do we see those lights again?
Here, still in the opening, with Rei riding his motorcycle. And look to the right: we see again the white truck that was next to the blue car. You know what also makes me think this is part of the same scene? Right after that, we see Rei's reflection on Ogino's car window and we already know the assassin was present at the explosion:
So, by now, I think we can say for sure that Kazuki, Rei, Ogino and Kazuki's wife were all together in the same scene. But were they the only ones? I don't think so. There is another frame with people on the road and under the rain:
Yes, that's Rei's father with his men. I also think that in this scene Rei's father is standing behind Kazuki. Remember how in the opening there's a hint of a bullet reaching Kazuki's back? Well, look at Rei's father right hand: doesn't it look like he's hiding a gun in his pocket?
Well, we can't really say it for sure, the frame is not clear, but you know where we see another right hand holding a gun?
Yep, right after, in the opening. But let's zoom in, there are some words on that gun:
"I want nothing but death"
The only people who I think would want a sentence like that on their gun are Ogino and Rei's father. It could be either of them, but I'm leaning towards the latter because of the frame from before.
Whoever it is, the most important thing here is who the pistol is pointing to: Kazuki's back but also Rei, who's on the left side in this blue frame.
I think at this point we can conclude that there was no single target, but two of them: Rei and Kazuki. Still, I think Rei was the main one, because of what Kyutaro said to him in the 5th episode. After all, knowing Rei's father, I think he would have no problem to hurt and/or kill his son. Remember, he's not his dad, he's his boss.
Why Kazuki thought? I think at this point in time Kazuki and Rei were already friends/partners and that Rei's father wanted to punish his son by killing the only person he was close to. Still, somehow, Kazuki survived and the one who actually got killed was his wife.
I think Rei might've tried to get out of the organization or betray it in some way. I think Kazuki was in it too, probably to help his friend escape from a life of suffering. After all, he was the one with lofty ideals, the one who believed there was an escape from their world of darkness.
One thing I love about the Buddy Daddies Experience: There’s no source material. No manga, no light novel. Nothing. It’s an original animation. As such, we’re all experiencing it for the first time together… which is super neat! Very cool! No spoilers! Only everyone being delighted by these idiots all at once on the weekly.
One thing I hate about the Buddy Daddies Experience: There’s no source material. I NEED TO READ AHEAD! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! THIS SLOW DRIP OF 20 MINUTES PER WEEK WILL KILL ME!
That is all. Carry on.
Reminder that Kazuki has an Instagram Account
It’s called fantastic_sweeper0516 and his little write up states:
I am Kazuki Papa. I’m a papa to one child (daycare). |Struggling to raise my child with my partner. 👧 miri (4y) 11.8
Note: He uses 相方 (aikata) for partner.
相方 (aikata) is a bit different from 相棒 (aibou). Aibou is more of a workplace partnership, while aikata is いつも一緒にいる人のこと or “a person who is always with you.”
I searched for the difference between the two words in Japanese and the top result was this write-up: 相方」と「相棒」の違いとは?意味や違いを分かりやすく解釈 on the website “meaning-dictionary(dot)com.”
This is what it had to say about aikata:
A summary of the above is:
1. The word means “a person who is always with you.”
2. Comedian partners, marriage partners, and lately lovers are sometimes called “aikata.”
3. 相 (ai) means “to help, assist” and 方 (kata) means “companion, same group” (etc.)
4. Some examples of how it is used with comedians is to announce things like how a popular comedy duo are no longer partnered together or when a comedian is looking for another partner to make a duo.
The Japanese dictionary site Goo has this as the definition for 相方 (aikata):
1. A person who you do things together with. Especially a partner in a comedy duo. Aite (partner like “Who is your dance partner?, the other party/addressee, opponent in sport). Aibou (work partner).
2. (Also written as “enemy prostitute”) This is the partner of a prostitute in the eyes of the customer at a brothel.
[In recent years, this term is also used to refer to lovers and spouses, especially among young people.]
The first definition is one we already talked about before, with both aite and aibou being synonyms that have slightly different nuances to them.
The second definition, from what I could tell, seems like an older, more antiquated definition.
The inclusion at the end there of young people using the term for lovers and spouses is probably the one that most people would assume Kazuki is using when looking at his Instagram account. Especially since he uses it when talking about raising a child together.
That being said, I don’t necessarily think this confirms anything about Kazuki and Rei’s relationship as it is currently. But it likely is the term that is just the most fitting given their current relationship dynamic involving Miri.
Especially because in this scene from Ep. 4, when Kazuki is dragging Rei to the first daycare, he uses the term パートナー (paatonaa) or “partner” to refer to Rei. This has a very general meaning:
From Jisho(dot)org. It can be used for a (dance or other performing arts) partner, a work partner, a spouse, etc. So maybe the use of 相方 (aikata) on Kazuki’s Instagram account indicates a future shift in their dynamic, but maybe Kazuki just finds it the most fitting for their situation. Since they are partners, but more than just work partners, and they do spend pretty much all their time together now, especially, because of Miri.
Of course, I am still looking respectively at the use of aikata and keeping it in the back of my mind.
Also, this is a total change in the conversation, but I’m going to guess that 11.8 is Miri’s birthday, so November 8th.

NOT THE SPARKLES AGAIN
I once heard someone say that because Arknights' disability representation is mostly tied to their fantasy turbo-cancer, then it doesn't feel like real disabled representation, and I've been unable to get it out of my head, like a piece of popcorn stuck in my teeth. So, rather than doing my homework like I'm supposed to be, I want to talk about why I disagree and why I love Arknights' approach to disability.
So, for those who are unaware, Arknights has a shockingly high amount of disabled characters, and characters who are disabled in a lot of different ways, both caused by being Infected and just being disabled in the way that normal people are. Nightingale has chronic pain, Lemuen is the best sniper in Laterano while being in a wheelchair, Akafuyu is mostly blind, Eyja has severe hearing loss, Rosmontis has severe memory loss, Amiya has very severe PTSD, I could go on and on.
And of course there'd be a lot of operators with disabilities! Rhodes Island is a medical organization dedicated towards long-term care of terminally ill patients. Of course many of them would develop disabilities, and of course Rhodes would have the resources and facilities to help them. They even make notes of how to treat them in their medical files, like how Ejyafjalla's has a little guide on how to best have a conversation with her. It makes perfect sense, but I can't say a lot of games would think about it on that level.
And that why I like this game's approach to disability so much. A lot of video games just treat disability as "someone missing an arm" or "someone in a wheelchair because of Their Injuries From Combat. It's usually treated as an individual thing, just someone who got hurt, or who maybe has a frail constitution or whatever. But in Arknights, disability isn't simply treated as a character trait for individuals, but as part of the worldbuilding itself. The world is largely defined by Oripathy, this fatal degenerative disease with no cure. And the Infected are treated as second-class citizens, considered free labor that they don't have to treat ethically because they're dying anyway. The writers realized that this would cause severe disability, both real and fantastical, and worked it into the story and world.
This runs the other way, too! Arknights' worldbuilding follows a sort of social model of disability, in a way. There's a lot of fantasy stories that treat the inability to use magic as a sort of disability, but to Arknights, it's... not. Because Arts require specialized training, and so a lot of people just don't know how to use them, and might not even know they can't use Arts. So it's not treated as such, even though it is still a physical inability to perform things other people can.
But on the other end, Laterano's culture is based around the Sankta having empathic communication between each other. Mostima, as a fallen angel, can't use this telepathy anymore, and she speaks about how othering it feels sometimes, to be physically unable to engage with an important part of her culture. While it's not explicitly stated as a disability to the Lateran culture, I certainly feel like it's treated as one to some degree. Namely that it's explicitly contrasted with Fiametta's PTSD rendering her unwilling to empathize with the people around her, as opposed to Mostima's physical inability. It's the fantasy disability treated with the same weight as real world disability, because within the world of Terra, they're the same thing.
And of course there's just some of the more fucked up fantasy stuff like "On top of her existing narcolepsy, Ptilopsis was forced to become plural after she had to have part of her brain replaced with a computer that forces her to speak and think like a computer or else it causes her severe mental stress to the point of physical pain." Which uh. I don't know where that fits in the conversation but jesus christ someone hug that owl
Of course, its representation isn't always perfect. Just off the top of my head, Nightmare is a pretty rough stereotype, with the whole "Oripathy gave her multiple personality disorder with a violent personality trying to take control of her body!!" trope. And, of course, I'm sure other people have complaints with the representation of their disability in ways that I'm not aware of because I only have the perspective I have.
But... what I remember about this game's treatment of disability isn't when it fails. What I remember is reading Glaucus' module for the first time, the story of the first time she ever put on the mechanical exo-suit legs that allowed her to walk for the first time in her life. And I started bawling my fucking eyes out. I cried because, even though I don't know the specific feeling of walking for the first time in years, I know well what she felt. That feeling of liberation from something you secretly feared was just who you are now. Even though you know it won't be a perfect solution, the physically choking emotion that you're able to get a little closer to a normalcy you've always wanted. The feeling that right now, the only thing you can do is run like the wind.
Back when H&K ch.15 first came out (the Valentine chapter where kagihira makes up after their fight), I had been wondering about why Hirano would care about it being past curfew.
And I couldn't figure it out. But ch.16 starts with Hirano buying chocolate for Kagiura before waking him.
Hirano was going to buy the chocolate on Valentine's Day
So. At this point I think most of us has seen the kagihira extra from Sasaki to Miyano vol.9 and have screamed at Hirano’s obliviousness. I think it really says something about kagihira that they can act like THAT and there STILL isn’t a consensus about whether or not they’re dating at this point. So I tried to remember if there’s a similar instance in Hirano to Kagiura that can give us a clue, because I don’t know either.
But first I checked the original Japanese to see how accurate a translation Hirano using Kagiura as a “pick-me-up” is. The word is 息抜き (ikinuki), which means something like relaxation, take a breather. Also, when Hirano thinks “Man, I’m beat” the original Japanese is 「疲れたな…」(tsukaretana). 疲れた means “worn out (as opposed to sleepy).” So where the English version makes me think that the energy Hirano gets from looking at Kagiura as like from an energy drink or something, the Japanese is a bit more like the energy you get from taking a break. (Nothing against the translation - 100% accurate translation is impossible and “pick-me-up” is a nice way to translate it in a way that sounds natural.)
So Hirano gets relaxation from looking at Kagiura. That sounds familiar…
Seeing Kagiura smiling face makes Hirano relieved. Also, looking or thinking about Kagiura just generally makes Hirano happy at this point.
Here’s what I think: Hirano is, at the time of the extra, very aware of the effect Kagiura has on him, probably significantly more than he is at current point in the manga, though he does know that making Kagiura happy makes Hirano happy, so who knows really. However, given that he doesn’t really act nor react any different in any other significant way, there’s sadly a good chance that he hasn’t realized that it’s romantic. (I can also easily see Kagiura asking Hirano if someone has confessed to him even if they aren’t dating, so that’s no help.)
It’s just. They aren’t really acting differently from where they are at current point in their manga. Hirano wanting to see Kagiura’s face when he’s worn out isn’t all that different from where he’s currently at in manga. But they always act so much like they’re dating that I can’t conclude anything.
like. hirano rejected kagi very easily. stupidly easy. but he kept wearing those blue earrings, kept putting them in every morning. kept wearing them around. and he kept fighting to have kagi by his side.
and now, god knows how we ended up here, hirano’s wearing not only those blue earrings but a ring, too, on his ring finger and everything. walking around draped in lingering remnants of kagi’s love when kagi isn’t around to see to it personally.
(not that kagi wouldn’t love to be around hirano constantly to see to it personally.)
(he would love doing that so much, but unfortunately hirano-san wants him to attain a high school diploma.)
honestly though. trains and train stations and busy & less busy streets, his college campus and convenience stores and whatever clothing shop he frequents to get his certifiably homosexual clothing. everywhere he goes, blue earrings and a ring worn on his left hand’s ring finger.
kagi asks him, “no one’s confessed to you at college, have they?” and the answer is obviously no, kagi, because the average college student doesn’t want to be the homewrecker of an apparent MARRIAGE.
just… worn everywhere. so easily. this hirano who asks to meet kagi just to look at his face for a minute, who says stunningly romantic things just as easily as he did before romance was even on the table, and who simply walks around with earrings in his ears and a ring on his finger like they were always meant to be there.
(although maybe they kind of were.)
(word on the street says that the weight of the ring on his finger is much, much lighter than the weight of not having kagi in his life.)
(and, besides, that weight on his finger is hardly new when a red string was there tugging at him the entire time.)
it’s just a little silly, that hirano rejected kagi so easily from the outset. stupidly easily. but he kept caring for him, and listening to him, and eating the green peppers on his plate, and waking him up in the morning.
and now he wears a ring.
silly hirano.

You know, I really think that one of the biggest difference between sasamiya and kagihira is that Sasaki and Miyano both have read a lot of romance stories and Hirano and Kagiura hasn’t.
Consider the experience with romance each of the four have had when they meet their love interest:
Sasaki has never been in love, but has read/seen heterosexual romance stories
Miyano had a crush in middle school and has read a lot of BL
Kagiura had a girlfriend in middle school but wasn’t actually in love with her
Hirano has neither had romantic feelings nor dated anyone before
They’re all newbies at romance, but at least Sasaki and Miyano have stories to help them. And their prior experiences have a big impact on how their romance plays out. Because sasamiya are the only ones with an idea of what it’s actually like to be in love. Even if Miyano’s “I don’t want BL to happen to me!” mentality got in the way for a while.
Sasaki, despite never having been in love, recognizes his thought of “oh he’s cute” as romantic early on. But since he only has met it in context of hetero romances before, it takes a little while for him to reconcile it with Miyano being a boy. He’s an open-minded guy, though, so it doesn’t take long. (And didn’t even need BL for it - he recognized it before Miyano lent him his first BL.)
Miyano takes a long time though, because while he is arguably the most experienced of the bunch in both real and fictive romance, he, aside from shipping kagihira, kept BL and his own life very separate. While he recognized gay couples as being a real thing, BL was something “not real” so it mostly confused him when figuring out his own feelings. He still recognizes how easily it would be for him to hurt Sasaki once he knows Sasaki is in love with him, though whether it’s because of BL or his own past experience is debatable. Still, the BL has DEFINITELY made it easier for Sasaki to flirt with him. And sasamiya’s ability to spot misunderstandings and resolve them early is almost definitely in large part due to both of their experience with romance stories.
Meanwhile, while Kagiura has more experience with people having romantic feelings for him than any of the others, this is the first time he’s had them for anyone else. And it turns out that he’s actually incredibly naive about romance. Because here’s why I think that sasamiya’s experience with romance STORIES is so important. Because Kagiura does have a lot of experience with romance, but only from the outside. Romance stories, while rarely very realistic, DOES show what romance feels like and often show some of the ways being in love can hurt. I think that the reason why Sasaki seems to understand his romantic feelings better than Kagiura from the get go is because he’s been in the head of characters that’s been in love, while Kagiura only ever has been on the outside, guessing about what it feels like.
Hirano… Honestly, I think he’s barely ever even TALKED about romance before Kagiura’s third confession. Where Kagiura at least knew what it looked like even if he didn’t know what it felt like, Hirano doesn’t even have that. And honestly? I can’t really blame him, as frustrating as it is to read. Like, consider listening to someone talking in a language you don’t know. You hear the sounds but you gain no meaning from them because you don’t know what the sounds are supposed to represent. To Hirano, that’s what romance is; a language that he doesn’t understand. He’s heard other people speak it enough to pick up some of the words - he knows what it means to accept or reject a confession and what Valentine’s Day is - but he’s had neither interest nor reason to learn it. But suddenly he’s hurting his dear roommate because he doesn’t know the language that Kagi-kun is now insisting they speak. And he’s trying to learn now but romance isn’t easy and because he never talks about feelings with anyone (except Kagiura because he’s forcing him to) he doesn’t have an interpreter like Niibashi sometimes is to Kagiura. Meanwhile Kagiura has to spell everything out because while he is very far from fluent in romance, it’s still more than what Hirano currently understands.
Love.
Nothing else.

You know,I really like the contrast between Sherlock and Albert/Moran's thoughts
Albert and Moran straight up went
They really put him on the pedestal and went all "He died for our sins" etc
You know when people put someone at such a high place, they kind of start getting away from them personally, they tend to see that person as someone who's flawless and perfect.
But Sherlock...
He somewhere managed to see his inner desires, how he finally wanted to be free from the burden he had on his shoulders(many people blamed Albert for that after last chapter but honestly he followed him after hearing about his plans, and Liam confirmed this in the current chapter)
Atonement through living is certainly the harder way,we see this with Mycroft(who shouldered all the bad things and secrets of the empire on his shoulders in order to preserve it's sovereignty, Louis, and Albert)
Liam pre timeskip was tired and wanted to escape that harder way,he was broken from the inside already because of the crimes he committed, living like that would've made things worse for him so he ultimately chose to die in order to escape the hard path of atonement.
But the current him accepted that death is not a means of atonement, and accepted the harder way with a smile, not because he was forced or something,he accepted it himself, because of those years in USA(WE NEED IT AS AN ARC C'MON,IF YUUMORI ENDS W/O SHOWING THAT I AM GONNA CRY)
Albert understood William, and they saved each other, but he also saw him as a perfect godlike being, while Sherlock was the one who saw the 'human' inside of William, someone who wished to escape the cruelty of the world, the burden of such ideals, and most probably made him accept that thorny path with a smile on his face.
